The dark side is the best hike.

Came here at sunrise for a grand view of the valley. Not too crowded, definitely worked hard to get up there. Would recommend poles.

Great hike! Beautiful views and smells! All the recent rain makes everything so vibrant. Be careful on the way down, there is a lot of loose gravel and it can cause you to slip if not wearing proper hiking shoes.

Another great hike. One of my favorite trails in the Scottsdale area!

Excellent hike with just enough uphill climbing from the get go and steady to the top. Totally satisfying.

Definitely moderate if you’re hiking AROUND it but my class and I hiked UP it to the top and had lunch. That would be considered very strenuous, there’s no trail, just loose gravel. That being said, don’t attempt unless you’re experienced and have hiking poles. Use the vegetation to your advantage. They ground the soil around it and makes the walk more sturdy. Gets rocky at the top which was the kicker after struggling the entire way up haha

Difficult!! Walked right up the volcano (not around). Very difficult because of all loose material and volcanic rock. Still a good story to tell :)

Great views and very well maintained trails and facilities. The hike is rather too easy but a good one still.

Great hike, easy to get to and free parking. It was 4.1 miles on my GPS. Trekking poles are always a good addition to the gear kit.

Did it this morning at the sunrise. IT WAS BREATHTAKING. You need to do it.

Great hike! Would definitely not go at sunset again (should have figured that out since it’s named sunRISE peak after all) because the sun blocks your view of the valley completely so it would probably be a more beautiful view at the top if you went at a different time! Took my friend who’s never been hiking before and she loved it! Only had to take a couple of breaks for her to catch her breath but overall a great hike and level for beginners!

Loved our hike today! Beautiful day after the cold temperatures this week.

Love the views - and a great workout. We like to time ourselves and aim to beat it (but stopping to take photos always slows us down!). Only negative - can get busy. Avoid weekends ideally - locals use it for fitness and lots of tourists. Maintained non smooth path. Great place to take people new to area.

Nice hike with pretty views. There were signs up for the twelve days of Christmas which was a nice touch and the trail was very nicely maintained. The only downside for me was this was a pretty heavily trafficked trail and we had to keep stepping aside for joggers. Other than that, I really enjoyed this hike and would definitely do this one again!

Great hike. Perfect for trail running just as long as there aren’t too many people out because the trail is pretty narrow most of the way. Awesome view from up top, would definitely love to be up there for the sunrise one day

Great little 3.5 mile hike! Not terribly steep, and incredible views. The only downside is that it was pretty crowded.

very nice trail. 3 miles up to the peak. more difficult than moderate. be prepared to climb rocks and walk on loose gravel. we hiked with a 12, 21, 26, 41, and 68 year old. took us about 4 hours up and out. if you reach the peak on the hour you can see the fountain go off

Really nice trail. Good for families and not too difficult. Nice views in various spots. Wonderful views of the fountain in Fountain Hills as well as Camelback.

Great views at the peak. Very large cactus to admire along the way. Moderate- not ideal for those who can’t hike up slopes.

Beautiful views. Well maintained trail. Best very early as the trail is too narrow for two people to pass in most places and it gets busy.

Good trail, well marked at the trailhead and at most major intersections. Nice pre-Christmas exercise!

Awesome short hike with great views and a smooth trail that lets you glide across the side of the peak. Very well maintained with lots of volunteer porters ready to assist as needed. Perfect choice to take family/friends visiting from out of town. Fun hike to repeat as it is relatively short in distance. Very busy though.... one group was squawking so loudly, a grandma desert tortoise emerged in a nightgown with a rolling pin and told the group to keep it down.

The trail was easy to follow and had a very gradual incline. There are large patches of ice and snow about 1.5 miles up until you summit. Just wear hiking shoes and you’ll be fine, no need for micro spikes. If you use the map for reference, keep going up. The map stops at an outcrop of trees, keep going up for the true summit. Other than that, it would be an understatement to say the views are amazing. 12/16/18

Wonderful hike! The views from the peak are nice and you get a 360 view of the surrounding area. The way down does have a lot of loose rocks but as long as you are careful you will be okay! The parking lot is small so If you see cars in the overflow on the right just park there and it's a short walk to the trailhead.

Amazing! This easy scenic hike is something everyone should do at least once. The rock formations are so unique and this is an outing even young families will enjoy. During December, there are sign posts with the 12 days of Christmas, Arizona-desert style marking the first 1/4 mile of the route. Very easy and well maintained trail!

Enjoyable hike. Quiet, moderate to easy hike. The views throughout are wonderful.

I enjoyed this with my 6 year old. Sun was pretty brutal mid day, for being December, and very little shade. Not too busy and beautiful views from the top. Moderate is a good rating for this trail.

Great little trail and not very crowded. Pretty views at the top. Trail is a little rocky and narrow on the ascent to the peak, but nothing overly daunting.

I love this trail. This trail has lots plants and bushes which makes it dense.
