Rangers recommmended that I did not go up the royal arch without micro spikes! Flat irons loop was icy and snowy as it is!

Beautiful formations and quite low-key.

Drove the hour + from Denver to check this place out. Very cool rock formations, some of which are very delicate. More delicate than they look. Spectacular colors and crevasses.

Was sad and upsetting and actually nauseating to see a large group of tourists going off trail, climbing all over the rock formations. With Absolutely no regard to the signs prohibiting climbing. Absolutely no regard for the delicate formations, some of which are just clay and literally shatters off the sides. This place won't be around much longer with such disrespect for the rock formations happening daily it seems, so catch it while you can (on the path, not on the rocks).

a challenging hike especially if you’re not used to the elevation. Incline right away and pretty much the whole time, but definitely worth it.

Definetly the hardest hike I’ve been on, bring lots of water and a small snack. If you’re from the Midwest like myself be prepared for the elevation difference, lots of yawns.

Snow packed, great trail to upper lake. Traction was ideal, snowshoes not necessary at all. Clocked 9.9m, 2100’.

We saw 20-30 other groups out on this trail during our 3 hour hike today. Gorgeous views. No snow on the trail, but icy in spots as was mentioned a few days ago.

Want to test your new microspikes out? This is a great hike. Hard because it ends with an incline. Strava mapping wasn't as great at calculating the distance/elevation gain- was more than 2 miles off (said we hike 11.2 versus the listed 8.7). Enjoy!

A wonderful hike with amazing views. Hardly anyone was on the trail! Nice, balanced trail!

Great trail! Easy hike! Possibility to go off main trail with no signs/markings and many social trails. Since I had it on record I could see when I edged off the trail. Great views. I went clockwise on the loop. Next time will do the hike in the evening going counterclockwise in attempt to catch a ‘sunset’ on the upper ridge coming back to parking lot.

Quite a few people out today - 55° and sunny! Trail had some snow covered sections but did not require spikes. Great views at the top. We went counter-clockwise on the loop and took the Oxen trail back to the parking lot.

Lovely conditions on 1/5/19 - snow covering 95% of trail to upper Chicago lake. Most of trail has packed snow, due to heavy use, but adequate to snowshoe, which we did for part, but using micro spikes was ideal due to rocky trail (particularly, the type that have crampons - I use Hillsound, rather than little yaktracks). I snowshoed on the lower reservoir lake surface, which looked to be solid ice. However, use caution...

I hiked this with a group in the fall. Outstanding hike and view at the arch. Hoping to trail run up to the "false summit" in the near future.

It was first time hiking in Garden of the Gods and this was the perfect trail. If you go early enough, we got there at 9, it wasn’t so bad. When we left at 11, it was super crowded. Next time, we’ll go even earlier.

Nice short hike, rather steep, cool arch. Currently icy in spots, microspikes very helpful.

Went last week. Could not get all the way to the trailhead by car, parked .7 miles down the road. the Snow was good but the trail is hard to find after about 1.5 miles from the car, so we didn’t get very far past the trailhead. My trail finding skills might be novice, and I didn’t feel like getting lost in the winter. But, I look forward to trying again either this winter or in the summer!

Great hike overall. Brought snowshoes in anticipation of a lot of snow but micro spikes worked well since the trail was packed snow. Definitely coming back this summer.

Beautiful "gotta do" hike.

Absolutely loved this trail! It was difficult and beautiful with an amazing arch worth hiking to. We hiked in Arches NP previously and this arch rivals many there, in fact, we were able to get directly under this one and were impressed with its size. The trail was well marked, offered varied terrain, and excellent views. The elevation, icy surfaces, steep inclines, and rock scrambles provided a nice challenge for us, but may make it challenging for some. Many parts of the trail had a thin layer of snow over solid ice, so consider wearing shoes with good traction.

My wife and I did this December 30th on my 65th birthday. Read Keeley Dowell review it was spot on. No need for spikes, several packed snow places EASILY traversed.. We also took Oxen Draw clockwise and it was quite beautiful. Conditions couldn't be any better very enjoyable BEAUTIFUL hike. We will definitely do this one again.

I would highly recommend wearing spikes. It was extremely icy- especially closer to the arch. There were point I was crawling on all fours and had to slide down some parts on my butt because it was so icy. Beautiful views though!

Fun to get there! Lots of cool places to climb off trail and great views. Went in December- be prepared for cold weather and ice. Take extra traction if possible to make it easier, not impossible without though.

An amazing Man & Message ( Jim Bishop ) and a amazing place !!!

My partner and I hiked Royal Arch Dec 26th. We left the pup at home, and I’m glad we did because some parts were icy and a little bit more difficult to traverse. I was surprised to see so many folks of all ages on the trail despite being the day after the holiday and how slippery some of the inclines were. It took slightly longer than I had expected but not too bad. I’m glad the weather held off until after we finished though, because I definitely did not look at the forecast. I would recommend making sure it isn’t going to snow/rain for about three hours before embarking.

Overall, the views were great and the arch is bigger than I expected based on the photo. Glad I brought a full bottle of water and let my small pup at home.

Went for my first time this afternoon... beautiful well marked trails. No service for most of the trail but no complaints from me on that. Views at the top were absolutely beautiful. I took Oxen trail to Eagle View clockwise and it made the journey up a bit easier. Pretty steep coming down though. Will visit again!

Did this on Christmas Day. Temps were warm and trail was in good condition. Nice parking lot and clean vault toilets. I’ve driven by this many times - always busy on the weekends. Nice view at top.

Snow and ice in some spots, 10 to 20 feet at a time with 90% of the trail clear. Did not use our micro spikes today but had to walk carefully in a few places. Watch for slick ice covered with a dusting of dirt.

Did on Christmas so not busy at all. Decent and fun especially for being close to Denver when you need less of a drive. Top of the loop had great scenes. Clocked 4.4 miles and at a slower pace did in a few hours. Didn’t need spikes though few areas had snow pack and that was enough to get traction. Lots of sun so did shed layers was about 40 out when did.

Excellent hike with a beautiful view your reward after steep climbing. Spikes needed in some areas today. Not all the great arches are in Utah!

Hiked this mid day on 12/22. Light snow to start then clouds and sun. Second half of the trail is steep and a fair amount of ice. Most people were in tennis shoes but we saw quite a few falls. We were happy to have poles and microspikes. The views from the arch are amazing. Great photo opp.

Hiked this today on 12/20. Great hike, with a steady incline the whole way (except near the arch). Would have been awesome if it weren’t for the ice that covered most of the trail. We only had hiking boots, but poles and traction would have helped. It’s manageable with just boots, but watch your step, and be wary for black ice. No snow on the trails as of today.
