Very hard when you do the loop clockwise. 1 mile of non stop steep climbing. Rest of loop is much easier. The view from the top is worth the effort.

Great and challenging hike. Good elevation gain. Was able to do in about 3 hours. Quite a few trail runners, decent amount of wildlife too. Awesome views! You do have to pay for parking on the weekends, fyi.

Awesome little out and back close to downtown Boulder. My pup loved it! Bummed the creek was dry and reservoir is very low, might be better to do in the late spring time. Definitely worth getting there early & avoiding the rush of people!

Good, easy hike with kids. Plenty of shade, nice views toward the end of the trail. Waterfall and creek are dried up, I am sure it is more beautiful with higher water.

Hit the trail at about 7am on a Saturday and it was great, not crowded but started to see more people in the way down, still not bad. Definitely strenuous, but I haven’t done many hikes lately so I’m not sure I’m the best judge. Pretty mellow first half until you climb between bear peak and south boulder peak, easy to hit both while you’re up there and each offers a little bit of a different view so definitely check both out (only adds like 20 minutes I’d say to the hike). Very pretty views and diverse vegetation from top to bottom which kept it interesting. My knees were shakin’ on the way down as there’s lots of rocks to go down but that’s only about 1/2 of the trail, as the first half is quite wide and gravelly. Would definitely do it again!

Great trail!

Disappointing- I was excited to see a trail within walking distance from my house but I don;t think I will be going back. No great views, crowded and TONS of aggressive/rude bikers and runners! Wish more people had trail etiquette but that seems to be disappearing with the more people that crowd our local trails. I don't think I would even consider this a hiking trail. If you want a decent hike check out any other trails in the area and you will probably have a better adventure.

Definitely a challenging trail. I’m in good shape but being from a lower elevation, I felt pretty winded at times. With breaks I still took about 4 hours with a half hour break at the peak. The view was worth it for sure. Highly recommend getting an early start since the trail is in the full sun at the beginning.

Great hike! Beautiful view at the top.

Took kids and dog. trail was lovely and shady on a hot day. no waterfall...only a trickle but climbing around was fun. the reservoir was beautiful and we stayed there an hour just enjoining the calmness.

This hike borders on moderate to hard. A fairly mild incline with a few steeper sections. We have run into a large bear on this trail so be alert and be prepared for what to do. We had to turn around the last time when the big guy would not back off and grant us passage.

Hard but the views at the top and along the way are gorgeous! Saw my first snake on the trail which was a little spooky and there's plenty of signs up warning about mountain lion and bear spotting so keep your guard up!

Oh boy, we saw a black bear cub on the amphitheater trail. Luckily a trail runner came through and scared it off. Other than that the trail has its difficulties in terms of large steps going up to and after the peak. It also started raining on us so i’d prefer to try again on a sunny, bear free day.

Great hike. Very beautiful. it was a little hard to find the right path to the trailhead, but once we found it it was great from there. Most of it is shaded. Lots of little streams and waterfalls. Just be sure to bring lots of water!

This is a great hike. I would call this the long slog to the top. We took Mesa via Towhee to Shadow Canyon to Bear Peak. Really beautiful views at all levels of the hike. Ran into rain/hail going up and waited it out. it cleared for a bit and by the time we reached the saddle more fronts we coming in. The Summit scramble was quick and we got pounded again with hail/rain coming back down to the Saddle. Overall...it was an awesome hike with wonderful view. took us 7.5 hours round trip. Most of that was due to several breaks and a couple good pauses for sheltering from the hail.

I like this trail, but I logged about 6 miles instead of 4.8 like it says. Just be aware!

Great walk

One of my go-to faves, especially when preparing for the next 14er.

You need a discover pass just FYI!

This trail is quite difficult! My husband and I wanted something hard-but man this kicked out butts! At one point you’re climbing up a ladder...so there’s that. The views were beautiful. The one thing that was a bummer-at the top there was an unusual amount of flying bugs...like a ridiculous amount. It made the summit a bummer and we didn’t spend much time there. But we would def do this hike again!

Great little trail with some moderatly physical sections. Predominantly mild hiking with lots of shade. The creek and falls were dry as we expected them to be but once we found the resivoure, the views were worth the wait. Pretty treacherous off trail options exist beyond the marked trail but the terrain is steep and we didn't veer far. Some folks were fishing, others letting their dogs drink, it was a pleasant spot to stop and take on the beauty. It would be noted that no "body contact" is allowed with the resivoure water, as posted. (No swimming, etc.) We went in July and it was fairly humid. I'd go again but only in cooler months, maybe in light snow.

2 mid-twenty girls and it took us just a little over 4 hours up and down. Awesome hike, the views make it worth it. Lots of rock scrambling and not much else than going straight up! A good workout, but not too too difficult.

Make sure you have $5 cash for parking!

Nice Trail keep your eyes on the trail markers pretty easy to lose the trail in several spots. Be prepared for weather. We hit a hail storm on the way back down took shelter in some rocks and trees. The hardest part is the hill to the trail head. You have to park at the bottom of the road and walk the dirt road. Interesting houses along the way though.

Well worth the hike!

This is a long drive from west metro Denver and the trail is hard to find. It was along the river which was dry. We were hoping to see the reservoir but never got high enough or close enough to get a view. It was deep in the woods and serene but not interesting.

Such a great hike!! Half of it is very steep up rocks so this trail is a must if you are looking for a great workout and even better views!

good hike great view of boulder at the top of bear mountain
