Beautiful day, started to get slushy at midday but treking poles helped a ton. Sometimes we didn’t quite follow the blue marks because people had made their own trail in the snow.

Hiked it after a bit of a snow storm; just follow the blue tree markers and you’ll stay on trail. Had spikes and poles, did just fine without snowshoes. Very little visibility at the lake and def a bit rougher weather but worth it!

Beautiful bluebird day! Started at about 8:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning and had the whole lake to myself. I did see a handful of people on my way back. Snow shoes definitely needed as the last half mile was thigh deep on my little 5'3 statur.

Great hike, definitely recommend microspikes and poles and offline map to stay on trail. I lost it once and started postholing pretty bad. About a mile up the trail is pretty easy to follow, the first mile is a little ambiguous but not too bad.

Passable with microspikes and poles, did see a person at the lake with just poles. Def. requires slower going on the icier parts if you don't have spikes/poles. Fully covered in snow.

Snow shoes definitely needed with the soft snow. Absolutely gorgeous, blue bird day.

Snow packed but there are still some pockets of decently deep snow. don’t necessarily need snow shoes but it wouldn’t be a bad idea if you got them. I made it out fine with spikes. Very peaceful and having some of the birds eat fruit out of my hand was pretty neat.

Did the hike last weekend (3/6), and the weather was perfect. Gorgeous hike through the forest leading to the snowed-over lake. There’s hiker parking when you get up to the ski area. Roads were very muddy, but made it up just fine in a Prius. Trail is hard to find, but once you’re on it, it’s easy to follow. Go past the ski lift and you’ll see a small brown building. The trail is about 50 yards to the left as you walk toward it. Mostly packed-down snow that was good to walk in; I was wearing crampons. Deep snow off the trail. Gray Jays will land on your hand! Saw a Downy Woodpecker and Mountain Chickadees, too.

Very nice hike today. The snowshoers have done us hikers a favor by packing down a nice path the entire way. Of course if you step off the path you'll be up to your knees, so don't lol. Picture perfect tee-shirt sunny day!

It’s really confusing finding the trailhead if you have never been before. From the parking lot you have to go across the ski base area, it’s on the other side of the ski lift. You have to walk up part of a ski run to find the start of the trail, which was unmarked. The snow was packed and you could easily hike in boots (spikes are ideal) for 90% of the trail. There were a few deep spots that snow shoes would of been ideal, but we easily did the hikes in spikes. Steady incline up to the lake, but really easy if you hike often. Pretty views at the lake. I would like to come back to see it in the summer!

Tried for Wheeler Peak on 2/26 but only made it about 2.7 miles. Trail was mostly there until the Lake/Peak split. After that the trail gets buried by blowing snow before you make it back down. We were post holing with snowshoes up to our waists, so we called it. I did speak with Taos Avalanche folk beforehand. They were super helpful!

Absolutely gorgeous. Im very glad we did this hike. The trail was mostly packed down. We hiked with our spikes in our backpack the whole time. They might’ve helped, but we made it up in a little over an hour with only a few post holes to speak of.

Still good hard pack on the trail after last storm, no snowshoes required until lake - then it gets deep

Wow. Stunning. Logistics - I was able to get to the TH no problem with a 2WD. I keep snow chains but didn’t need them. There’s some snow and wet road, but just go slow. The snowpacked trail is easy to walk on with spikes. I didn’t need snowshoes. If you go off the trail though, you’ll probably end up knee to thigh deep in snow :) speaking from experience

Beautiful trail. It was a little hard to find the start. We did the newer starting point by the wood Pergola and met back up with the trail. The alternative leg we took in the beginning as a little more distance and challenge but was more beautiful. Highly recommended.

Great hike through the woods, snowshoes were definitely helpful! Have to walk through the ski resort to get to the trail, but easy to find after that!
