Snow shoed the entire way. The walk out was tough with a lot of uphill areas. It was a very long walk in the winter because most roads are closed. The view was beautiful!

Did this trail in the summer and it’s a super easy scenic hike. If it weren’t for the length, it’d be a solid beginner hike. There are areas to jump in the water and swim in the summer. Pack a lunch and don’t forget your bear spray! We saw a couple on the trail when we were there.

Great trail for the area. Loved the views at the lake and the scenery on the way there. We didn’t see any bears but would definitely recommend bear spray. Not a difficult hike, which was nice.

We completed this hike after deciding once we got to Phelps Lake via the Woodland Trail we would just continue on around the lake. It rained and was windy, but the rain/sleet was intermittent and we had some peeks of sunshine too. We were rewarded at the lake with a breathtaking view including a rainbow in front of the mountains. It was rough terrain for beginner hikers, but we managed. We even got to see a bear!

Nice steady trail that winds through the woods and keeps you close to the lake. North side of the lake was def the favorite. Enjoy!

Great trail! We went at 9:30 in the morning and only ran into 4 other people. Saw some fresh droppings but no wildlife other than lots of squirrels. Great views here and there.

Nice, easy trail with pretty good scenery. Although I didn't see any wildlife on the trail, I did see a small bear hanging out by the side of the road (as soon as I left the parking lot) and a moose at Schwabacher Landing (right before my hike at Phelps Lake). Took two hours and thirty minutes to complete.

HikingGreat!

Fantastic and different views along the whole trail. The beginning was a bit of a climb (the 1.3 miles on Woodland connecting trail) but once you reach the lake elevation levels out. We didn’t see any wildlife hiking in early afternoon but lots of bear and elk evidence. Definitely recommend hiking with bear spray. Took us about 3 1/2 - 4 hours hiking slowly and taking pictures along the way

Pretty trail. Saw a deer and plenty of squirrels. More of a walk than a hike.

Nice trail but not really spectacular when compared with some others in GTNP.

This trail was absolutely breathtaking. I am on a 10 day road trip with 2 of my friends and this by far was the HIGHLIGHT of our trip. The views & the hike were STUNning. I recommend starting at the Phelps Lake overlook and hiking down that way rather than starting at the visitor center. If you google maps “Phelps Lake” it will take you to the hike to the overlook. This trail is the best I’ve ever been on in my life!

HikingGreat!

Hiked on Wednesday Oct 7th, arrived at 10:15am, had no trouble finding parking. Didn’t see any wildlife but a couple other groups of hikers saw some bears earlier in the morning. Lake was crystal clear and glossy until about 1pm when the wind picked up. Jumped off the rock into the lake and the water was very cold (but it’s October so I wasn’t expecting it to be warm). Nice views of the lake throughout the trail, in my opinion the best view is from the jumping rock. Not a strenuous hike, mostly flat, more than half the hike was shaded.

It’s a nice trail. The lake view is good...the best view of the valley is from the jumping rock. Into death canyon was honestly a bit of a let down. In a park filled with 5-star trails, this was a 4-star trail with one five star view (from the jumping rock)

Did the loop counterclockwise, which I recommend. Great views of the mountains, and at the right time of the day, great reflections of them on the lake. I enjoyed the view a lot. Midway through the trail, there's a small beach you can access if you fancy a swim. There's also a trail leading into Death Canyon - if you follow this just a few hundred feet, you can get a decent look further into the canyon.

An amazing hike. Aspens are in peak color and it was a gorgeous morning. Glad we got an early start as the trail got busy. The north side of the trail was certainly our favorite.

this trail is great! short if you want to just go to the lake and back to the preserve, longer If you go all around the lake. nothing technical, but some narrow, rockier portions. well maintained and well marked this was a great first trail in the Tetons be for a couple flat landers. lol parking wasn't an issue but we were out early. heard the elk but didn't see any. we did see the bear cubs (adolescents now) on the other side of the creek. they are quite frequently seen on the wildland trail side of the creek. can't recommend this one enough! great way to see what GTNP has to offer!

HikingGreat!

The views were breathtaking!! This was my first hike in Wyoming & the view of the mountains around the lake was incredibly beautiful. I agree with others that this hike should be ranked “easy.” There was very little elevation change. It was relatively flat so the only thing that would qualify as “moderate” is the length of the trail. I highly recommend this hike to anyone who is hiking for the scenery and solitude. It was about 30 minutes between seeing other people... that was nice!

Easy moderate hike. Bring your water shoes to hang at the beach. We hiked up to the lake observation point for some stunning views.

Nice hike to acclimate yourself to the altitude/harder hikes if necessary. Definitely an easy hike, but with a great view. the view is generally consistent throughout as it is a loop around the lake. I give 4 stars for view and general group hike. I would not expect to be challenged on this hike.

The trail is more ‘easy’ than moderate. The hike is through the forest with occasional clearings. Once you reach Phelps Lake you see the lake with Mountains in the background for most of the hike. We hiked midday (11:45-2:30) and didn’t see any bears. ( a good thing ) I’d recommend this one

Perfect trail before heading to the airport and sitting on a plane. Pretty flat. Pretty. Go early to avoid people and potentially see bear.

Great trail, and due to the parking enforcement not crowded at all! We came at 9:15 am on a Friday and got one of the last parking spots (we got lost on the way there... entry road doesn’t say Phelps, says Rockefeller preserve) Tons of wildlife! We saw elk, deer and moose. No bears, although we did hear someone yell “Bear on the trail”. Carrying bear spray should not be optional here. As the ranger put it... “Bears are on the trails and... everywhere” The trail itself is mostly flat and with beautiful views of the lake and occasionally mountains. The fall colors make it super awesome in late september. A bit long for our taste - by the end I was ready for it to be over.
