It was a spectacular hike ❤️. By far my fave.

Hiked this trail with my girlfriend on Sept 7th. I am 64 yrs young, but live at sea level (St. Pete,FL)
the first 3-4 miles not so bad, but once you leave the maintained trail it gets much tougher.
That combined with the lack of oxygen made me consider quitting several times. Luckily for me,
my girlfriend is younger and in better hiking shape, so I toughed it out. It was the best pay-off to a hike
that I have ever experienced. The view was spectacular. The sun on the lake and the reflection of the sky made it seem that you were in a painting. As with many places we have been, none of the pictures, as beautiful as they are, can quite hold up to being there. It was very hard to leave.

did the hike 4th of july weekend. amazing hike!! worth the switchbacks and boulder field scramble. the view at the top was amazing. the lake was so cool! take plenty of water! we all depleted our water on the way up and refilled with our filters at the lake. we arrived early but not early enough and had to park further out. about 10 miles up and back to the car. we did see a mom and cub on our way up. they wandered off into the field away from us so definitely bring bear spray, never know!

We loved this hike. Still can’t believe we were there ❤️

I don't usually review trails, but this one is pretty great! We went a little later, so it wasn't as busy. But we got to a point in the trail where a moose and her baby were on the trail. We had to wander off the trail but it was an awesome experience. The scenery is also beautiful. It's 4 miles but it's very casual.

Beautiful. May take longer than you think to complete the hike. Route-finding can be difficult in the boulder section and may not be appropriate for children, older folks, or disabled. A stunning annual run for us with access to the Middle/Grand saddle.

Was exactly like the descriptions said. We started out around 09:00 and took 5 hours to get to top. I’m very out of shape now days and refused not to give up until we made it. My wife waited on me lots going up but kept me motivated. The views going up and at the top are good enough motivation.

We hiked this trail in order to summit Disappointment Peak. Before beginning the last leg of our summit, I took a refreshing (and frigid) swim in Amphitheater Lake. I believe we counted 18 switchbacks. Both lakes were breathtaking!

phenomenal hike with great views. This hike leans towards the more difficult side. It took us around 5 and a half hours for the entire trip.
Plan on taking a lot of water or at least water filters to restock on water at the lake itself.

Great hike with breathtaking views. Saw lots of chipmunks but no bears! Had bear spray just in case. My husband and I really enjoyed this hike.

Lovely views above Phelps Lake. Take the time to go beyond Patrol Cabin as the canyon opens out and you get tremendous views. There was a light covering of snow in the Canyon which made it all the more spectacular. The aspens were at their best

Very icy conditions with considerable snowfall covering the large boulders. Mentally and physically challenging! Make it to the top and you’ll be greeted with a spectacular view.

Awesome scenery

Great hike with stunning views. Highly recommended

Beautiful trail past String Lake and Leigh Lake. You can get some nice photos of the mountains reflected in the lakes. Gorgeous, clear water. Very flat trail, so great for a recovery hike if you’ve done something challenging the prior day. Ice starting to form on the lakes. Hiked Oct 15.

Hiked this Oct 14. Snow at Patrol Cabin and into the canyon. Tough hike if you are just acclimating to the elevation-it’s a long, uphill trek to the cabin from Phelps Lake. We did go into the canyon a bit, but there was about 6” of snow so we didn’t go too far. The switchbacks are not super steep, just constant uphill for a while. Beautiful scenery, although most of the aspens had lost their leaves.

Incredible payoff at the end. Easily one of my top 3 hikes ever.

Just did this oct 14. got within 100m from the top, waist deep snow and after hours of making fresh tracks we called it! Past the junction there was no way to find a trail. With it wind chill we think it was about zero degrees. If you're going to go later this season I suggest gaiters and snowshoes!

Absolutely a unique hike and well worth the effort to get to the top. Views are unparalleled.

Started at lake Taggart. Hiked this the first day of our Tetons and Yellowstone trip. I live in Houston so would have been a good idea to do a warm hike. The hike felt murderous. The altitude really got me. Great views and a nice challenging hike though. Will definitely do it again, this time after a warm up hike

Traveled on 10/12/18. Trails were pretty moderate until the boulder fields. Boulders were covered with several inches of snow which made it even more challenging. Cairns were extremely helpful in guiding. We were the first to travel this morning, so we actually followed a wolf’s footprints all the way to the top. Views were incredible, would love to try again when the lake is not frozen.

Very beautiful around the lake!

Our group did this hike on 10-5-18 right after an early snowfall. The first half of the trail was easy going, but as we approached the first large tree fall and entered the boulder fields, the ground became very muddy. While it was a little slow going through the boulders, the most difficult part was climbing the muddy trail at the end toward the lake. I highly recommend yak tracks and trekking poles to navigate this section if hiking in similar conditions. I’m not sure I’d attempt this hike with any more snowfall unless footwear is designed for the ice, mud, and/or snow. With that said, the lake was absolutely glorious and breathtaking. It was worth every step up and back to see it. It’s cold at the top, so bring layers to allow an enjoyable stay.

Took 2 hours to the lake edge, about the same going down. Hardest part was navigating the rock / boulder fields, but, after reading several other more detailed posts from AllTrails, it was not bad. The rock piles left by other hikers was most helpful!

We managed to do this trail in 4 hours between rain showers. The canyon is wonderful and great fall colors. No sign of bears but it is prime territory’s I tale precautions

Hike was tough, especially the steep bolder field to get to the lake. The view of the lake/tetons was worth it but definitely difficult.

the reviews are all correct! we started this hike at the taggart lake TH so added a few miles but was worth it. heard elk after Bradley lake. once on the split up to amphitheatre, we saw a teenage bear. glad we had our spray but did not need to use it. elevation gain was a natural stairmaster so once you have your pace, you're good to go. bring plenty of water and a light lunch to enjoy at either lake. we met a great aspiring dentist- Tina from Seattle. hike on girl!
