This hike is amazing. The views from the top are SO beautiful. One of the things I would warn you about is hiking with dogs. I had both of my dogs with me, both very experienced hikers, and once we summited all the pads on their feet were completely ripped off. I think it was in part due to the rocks being super hot and being so jagged and sharp. Just use caution when hiking with your pups and if you have dog boots bring them!

Great short hike. Did it over the weekend; started at 0620 and got back down by 0945 (jogged down). The views were phenomenal. Be aware that, as everyone has pointed out, miles 3-8 or so are largely talus or loose dirt with lots of rock.

*pretty unpopulated trail in october- YEY!
*last bit of trail is a road that takes you up to the fire lookout station at the top. Views up there are wonderful!
*bring all the water you'll need- there isnt any on the trail.
*gorgeous views in the last mile and a half!

I have hiked this trail twice, both times I summited. Bring a lot of water as there are no creeks or any other “safe” sources (people skinny dip in the lakes).

Its a great trail and very scenic. Very fun and not very difficult. It took me about 5 hours round trip, the skies were clear and there were no disruptions. Stay out of the sun if you can as it is pretty brutal in July and August.

For the steep rock section, if you have the energy and are acquitted, I recommend going straight down the face. It is faster and takes a lot less time. Just have “respondent” ankles as I say, make sure your ankles quickly adapt and turn if a rock is loose.

No need for tekking poles or any special skills, just perserverance and water! Have fun and goodluck!

There’s nothing more I can say about the view from the top - it’s outstanding.

However, don’t underestimate the challenge of this trail. I’m relatively fit, and it took me 3 hours up and 2.5 hours down.

I was quite surprised to see the types of people attempting this climb, and their level of preparation. As a minimum I’d recommend:

- Good shoes. Yes, you can do it in trainers, but they don’t offer your foot or ankle any protection, and this is rough terrain
- Suitable clothing. You wouldn’t go to the gym in jeans and a sweatshirt, so why try to do a 7 hour walk up a mountain in them? Hiking pants or shorts, and a wicking t shirt.
- A bag big enough to carry the items below
- A warm layer, and a waterproof one if it may rain. It gets cold once you near the summit.
- A whistle to get attention if you’re hurt or lost
- A torch if you’re walking near sunset or the days are short
- WATER. You need about 3 liters minimum. Imagine you were going to the gym for 7 hours and think about how much you’d drink. I saw people with 500ml for the day - that’s going to hurt!

Definitely a difficult one! But so worth it!

with being used to.sea level elevation this was one of the hardest hikes I have done but so amazing from the top. definitely a must at least once!!!

Amazing worth every step

Challenging hike but well worth it for the views! Good hiking shoes are a must and be prepared for all sorts of terrain. It took us around 7 hours and we did not encounter too many other hikers on the trail.

This trail was amazing. Quite challenging to complete but the views from the top make the effort absolutely worth it. I wouldn’t recommend this trail for those who are unsure of their footing. My friends and I completed the trail in about 7 hours with many photo breaks and an extended lunch at the top.

Great view at the end! Really enjoyed the scenery along certain sections of the hike mainly at the start. After you reach the rock boulders, it just becomes more of a slog to summit. Was overall quite manageable and steady ascent. It does get windy at the top so bring layers. Was quite busy hike.

This trail was so much fun! It took us about three hours up and one hour down, my boyfriend and I went in August and it was the perfect time to go! it was the perfect temperature! Also, this was our first hike and we aren't super athletic and we make it all the way to the top! It was challenging but so worth it! The views were amazing

* pretty, uncrowded in october.
* bring what water you need.
* lovely views!
* forested, shady, peaceful, wonderful walk.

Started the hike early which was a great choice. Not going to lie, it was tough. But man was it worth it!

I thought this was more of a death march than a hike as you are basically rock jumping for 2 miles up and down which one wrong step is an injury for sure. It takes strategy, balance, and mindfulness to get up and down this mountain. Beautiful views for sure, but you have to stop to enjoy them.

Did this hike 9/9 and it was absolutely gorgeous! I didn’t find it to be too difficult. The toughest part was scrambling through some rocks combined with the elevation gain, but soon enough you make it back on to a trail. Drove straight from the Reno airport and started the hike around 1530 and ended around 1930. Took about a 20 min break at the lake and another 20 min break once we got to the top before descending.

Mostly in the trees, striking view of the lake from the top. You can continue on to Martin peak if you want.

Worth it!

Absolutely stunning! Great hike on many levels. Fun watching top of airplanes as they flew by. Hiked via Glen Alpine trail/Gilmore lake. Really need good boots as the trail is mostly loose rocks. Next time i will definitely eat a big breakfast before hand. you will need all the calories you can get. 100% worth it!

Beautiful views! Great walking day, not too hard not too easy. Just right !

Beautiful trail. Did it yesterday but the views were largely hidden by smoke form nearby first fires. digging is rough but there are shady parts throughout the hike. we left at 10:00 but wished we had left earlier when it would have been cooler.

Great hike if you really wanna get a workout in. My husband and I went with our 2 dogs. I definitely recommend starting your hike earlier- we got there at 8:30am on a Sunday morning, by the time we left at 1:30pm the whole parking lot was full. Gorgeous views, lots of rocks...like LOTS of rocks, you’re basically walking on rocks the whole time, so wear good hiking shoes/boots!

It was amazing! Definitely a little difficult due to the lose rocks walking on, don’t look down you’ll trip. But beautiful views and totally worth it

Difficult hike, not for the distance but for the elevation gain and the lack on solid ground (hiking on shale for a good portion) but one the most beautiful and rewarding hikes in Tahoe! 10/10 would do again

Very nice and beautiful trail. Need to do it in a good weather to explore the best views. If you don’t have enough time, you can finish at the cathedral lake and then return.

Beautiful

this one is sweet, did it on 9/23/2018. The trail is under 2 miles and easy to follow, the last push was tricky, it took me a while to figure out how to climb up. Extremely windy on the top, but the view is probably the best
