The parking lot is pretty slippery. I attempted the hike, but had to abort after 1.2 miles in because the snow was falling pretty good and I didn't want my truck to be stuck the next morning. That said, it is a pretty hike in the snow. If you are thinking of accomplishing this hike this time of year, I suggest chains and 4 wheel drive (of which, I have neither (yet)).

Seemed that the trail is a lot longer than noted on the map so be prepared with extra water and snacks. We hiked during a smokey day from nearby fire so could be it was a bit more difficult to breathe that day. Lake is surrounded by volcanic geology so not the typical sierra granite style lake. Eagles nest in the cliffs so you might get to see them fly over the lake if you are lucky!

The ideal introduction to hiking trails in Tahoe. Spectacular views begin almost immediately. Granite Lake, about half way up, is charmingly picturesque, and there are more stunning views nearing the saddle. You can stop and go back at any point and have a pleasant hike. You can do it in 3 hours but why not take longer and enjoy it.

Great trail for a Fall hike. I would rate it as easy rather than moderate.

Great area. I went counter-clockwise and the South side of the loop was incredibly difficult to keep track of. Had to look for the trail constantly but the lakes are beautiful!

Amazing! Beautiful views the entire way. Steady incline all the way up, but you are stopping to take it all in anyway so you will get plenty of breaks!

Great hike, lots of elevation gain. It took us and a dog about 3 hours there and back. Be aware that out and back is almost 6 miles to top of the peak. The view was incredible and worth it!

Legendary Flume Trail! Take this 1.5 mi, 5 mi, 7 mi all the way up to the entire 15 mi trail. Incredible Lake Tahoe vistas all along the way. Solid vertical climb so you get a great workout in as well. Bring water as it gets hot and dry. Careful of mountain bikers if you’re walking a dog. Enjoy the hike! Enjoy the views!!

Hard at times due to continued climbing up, but it’s worth every step because of the amazing views at the very top.

I’m always looking for trails to take our horses on and this is not one of them. Mostly an easy hike with the exception of 2-3 granite areas that would be nearly impossible on horses. Too many hikers for my likes as well.

Absolutely breathtaking! Highly recommend. Do this hike. Stunning views all the way up and they keep getting better. Steady uphill the whole way, but plenty of rocks to stop and sit and rest as needed. Lots of turnoffs to explore as well. Definitely will go back!

We loved this hike! Even in off season it can get busy after 10am, so start around 9.

If you’re athletic, it will take 2-3 hours.

The trails are not marked well around the lakes, so be prepared to wander around there a bit.

There is nothing moderate about this hike! It’s definitely an easy one! Perfect for trail running and great for dogs with water along the way and plenty of shade. Reward of beautiful lake at the end! Highly recommend.

This hike is amazing! Highly recommend! Dog friendly. Lake along the way for pups to swim and cool off.

Great hike, little busy, beautiful views

Very nice well marked trail. Pretty much all uphill on-way but nothing too hard. Very pleasant scenery. Would be awesome around october because of all the aspen trees. Although I hiked it, it would be a nice beginner MTB trail. Some rocks at the beginning you could walk but a good trail without death cliffs. :)

This is a moderate trail only if you are agile and fit. I have a fit dog, Shepherd, and it was a scramble for him with a couple of spots where I had to lift him to get him over some rock and log obstacles. It is NOT suitable for horses by any stretch of the imagination. There are some semi-steep portions of this trail that are more rock than trail, littered with volleyball sized rocks along sloped granite faces in some places and precarious dead fall bridges in others. If you don't do rocks or high steps, this is not the trail for you. Horses would not be able to negotiate these obstacles safely, regardless of whether you dismount or not. If you have little ones it will be a scramble for them too. We went in mid-November so the bogs, marshes and intermittent streams were dry or frozen allowing us to avoid the bugs. If you are looking to back country camp be aware that there are a lot of dead standing trees that are potential widow makers. Also be aware that regardless of fire conditions, the amount of deadfall and standing dead trees in the area make this bowl a tinder box.

Beautiful hike and views. Did an amazing sunrise hike and the whole way up to the peak we got beautiful views of the sun coming over the mountains with the lake in front. Little steep at times but definitely a consistent incline. Top has a well worth it view.

Climb is up to the lakes only then a cool little loop to see all 5 lakes and all downhill from there. Just pace yourself up, and this will be a very nice outing-loop the lakes- and down. As others stated, follow your map on the app around the lakes. Not super defined, but not hard to adjust and figure out either. Have fun!

Hiked to Grass Lake. Quiet trail - only saw a few other hikers on the path. Extremely rocky which can slow the pace. Definitely recommend keep the map with you because the trail can be a little hard to follow at times. Grass Lake was peaceful - light breeze but relaxing.

Trail is not well marked once you get to the lakes so keep your All Trails app handy! We ended up off trail several times but were able to get back on easily by checking the app!

Great trail. Route finding around the loop at the top was a bit tricky. If you are not comfortable with bushwhacking, stick to the main trail and skip the loop.

Great trail. Rocky and flat in the beginning. Beautiful views at Grass Lake. Quick easy hike that one can finish within a few hours.

One of the best hikes I’ve ever been on in Tahoe! Amazing views all the way up, in late October the most BEAUTIFUL fall colors. Definitely constant incline that will get your heart rate up but nothing unreasonable! Loved every second of it and the views at the vista at the top are stunning! Great dog trail too. I went on a Thursday and it was moderately busy near the bottom - I imagine it’s insane on weekends!

generally: easy trail near tahoe city with good scenery (open/mountains first part and along lakes for middle portion), not crowded on a fall weekday
road conditions: paved to trailhead, parking along side the road, no fee/pass needed, ~15 min from tahoe city
trail conditions: rocky/loose gravel for first mile then more packed dirt; find your way around lakes on footpaths
scenery: open trail w views of surrounding mountains and ski resort, upper trail around lakes with nice views off all lakes and surrounding mountains; some lingering fall foliage
difficulty: easy-moderate (first mile with ~1000' elevation, then flat thereafter)

Great moderate hike for anyone looking to go for a non-technical walk in the mountains. At 52 and living at 682’ above sea level, I had to pace myself on the steeper parts, but had no trouble accomplishing the hike. Uphill at the beginning and then a nice break walking across the beautiful big meadow, you continue a climb up and over to proceed to the lake. Dardanelles Lake is not on the marked post, but Round Lake is. Go right at the post that says Round Lake and then a few hundred yards down the trail go left at the next post to get to the lake. The little lake is very pretty and if you have time stroll around it. Nice prize to see for the walk to it. Since most of the climb occurs at the front of the hike, it’s a nice downhill back to your car. Aspens were still brilliantly colorful! Enjoy your day!!

It’s a very beautiful hike with lots of lake views. We stopped by at Granite Lake for lunch and since it was end of fall, it wasn’t very crowded. The trail is well maintained. The views at various vistas are spectacular. I’d rate it between moderate and difficult.

You won’t regret it. Peaceful and beautiful.

Be sure to watch for cairns otherwise the trail is hard to see.
