on Donner Lake Rim Trail

I followed the advices and went on the real trail, not the dirt road. Definitely better, well worth it!

If you’re looking to discover new lakes, these are underwhelming. Cathedral is a snowmelt pond with no in or outflowing streams. Dead water. But the trail itself is fine, with nice views of Fallen Leaf along a ridge for about a half mile. If you have dogs this is a great trail - we saw many, including several off leash ... pretty clear that rule isnt enforced. We passed a poor woman lost two small dogs that bolted.

Great hike we have older children they loved it beautiful views

Worth the 3+ mile drive to the parking area where there is lots of parking. Hiked with our dogs and passed few hikers on our way out, a few more on our way back, but no other dogs. We hiked out to grass lake. Only part of the trail that was a little tricky was the creek crossing where it wasn’t obvious. But if you look to the left you see the logs across the creek and it picks up the trail there. Amazing views.

Awesome views! Worth the drive.

We hiked down the main path to the beach. The water is crystal clear and beautiful. There are rocks that we swim out to and jump off of... The water was cool but the sun was warm so we sunned ourselves like lizards

moderate trail I love the waterfalls

This trail was pretty that took us to old out buildings & a gorgeous waterfall. It’s a pretty rocky trail with lots of bugs, but the beauty is worth it

Good easy workout. Worth the views.

Uphill almost all the way. Well marked until you hit dusty Jeep road, then it isn’t. A loud motorcycle joined me for the dusty Jeep road part. Some parts of hike are lovely with great views of Donner Lake. I didn’t make it all the way to Summit Lake - too much dusty hot up up up. Some freeway noise for about half of hike.

Super pretty hike the whole way through! First mile or so is all incline but it’s a relatively smooth trail for a while. Great views!

Parked just above fallen leaf lake on a small patch of cleared roadside. We didn’t know there’s a small parking lot (and bathrooms) about a half mile up where the trail begins. Take a picture of the map before you start. We then hiked to Grass Lake. About 6 total miles out and back. The beginning mile is quite rocky so have stable footwear. And if you have any knee/ankle issues, bring poles especially for the way back. To get to Grass Lake you will have to climb across logs at two different points, not a big deal. Just be careful with kids and dogs. Also BRING WATER and snacks, there’s shade but lots of exposed trail. We saw a family with a group of teens and only one girl had on a backpack and everyone else had 20 oz or less sized water bottles, nothing else. That’s not enough in the summer. Their water was gone before even making the halfway point and they were struggling. Think about yourself, your kids, your dogs and be safe! When we got to the lake we set up our hammocks and hung out for about 90 mins before heading back. So worth it!

Good hike while getting acclimated to the altitude.

Enjoyable hike in the woods, with a stream running by, and beautiful views of Lake Tahoe at one point during the walk. The uphill and downhill portions are at the beginning and end of the hike, with easy strolling most of the way.

Amazing views from the peak. The trail to the peaks is left, off the trail that goes down into Desolation. Just follow the stacked rocks. Snow basically gone for the season. Excellent place to have your lunch or just look down into Cascade,Fallen Leaf and Tahoe. Also a great view of Tallac. Trailhead parking goes fast so get there early.

beautiful trail!! for those wanting a bit of a challenge you can take the short cuts and avoid the hairpin turns going up or down, there's a slight thin "trail" that guides you through the brush

Great hike with amazing views at the end. Last push to the top was a little tricky due to snow, but just went straight up. Grade is gradual to the end so quite doable.

I loved it!!

Sad that people don't have the adventurous spirits to explore this area more. They stop before getting to the best parts of this trail. Grass lake is so much fun to hike too, creek crossings, waterfalls, rock hopping, to be rewarded with a valley and lake surrounded by massive peaks and waterfalls visible from many directions. Don't be lazy than give a low review. This trail is awesome, if you can hike more than a mile lmao.

Great hike with amazing views. There was snow towards the top, but easy to get around.

this was a great trail! wonderful water front

Amazing views all the way down, with some valley/big lake/snow capped range views framed by massive conifers. Fun rock scrambling along the lake, with some neat jumps and balancing. Stunning sun sparkle on turquoise harbor water. The only knock was the number of people making it hard for photography and finding a meditation point. Probably our fault for going on a Memorial weekend; I would likely give 5* mid week.

Nice hike. Good and strenuous on the way up, great view, and an easy walk back.

Did this trail on 5.23.18. Some snow in the higher parts but with good waterproof boots and pants one would be fine. The trail goes further up another 0.7 miles to get to the peak, worth it! Beautiful trail.

Great area! 3 or 4 trails that connect to this loop, very well marked. I saw a mama bear and two cubs!

10/10.. amazing views from Maggie’s peak saddle and maggie’s peak.. Hiked 5/19/18 and the snow starts just past Granite lake. We went all the way to the top, got some snow in our boots but nothing we couldn’t get out and the view was more than worth it. The view of desolation wilderness from Maggie’s peak saddle spot was amazing as was the view from the very top.

Beautiful scenery and amazing outdoor views. Well maintained trail with a small stream that leads from a series of ponds. Would definitely hike here again.

Parking is a bit of a challenge. That's a great thing as everyone else will have the same issue! I'm always a bit wary of a trail that goes down from the start but this one really isn't too long or steep. Lot's of big trees to enjoy. A large meadow that you'll catch glimpses of. The harbor is fairly small, but as beautiful as all the others in Tahoe. Nice having the signs about the bit of history associated with the area.
