Made it to Cathedral lake in trail runners and gaiters. Snow pack is about 3-5 feet or more and is consolidated enough to walk on without snow shoes, but expect some post holing mid afternoon. I've went up twice this winter and both times were amazing. Bring the right layers as days are short and conditions change rapidly

This trail is no joke! I look forward to getting back to it in the summer when the snow is gone. It’s incredibly beautiful, and as others have said, incredibly challenging. I would say with the snow, this is more difficult than “moderate”. It’s easy to follow the trails from those who’ve already been up.

Another hike that took place before this app?website was up and running. I loved this experience. it was great for higher elevation training since you stay well above 8 grand the entire time. I remember stunning views of Lake Tahoe, Washoe Valley and a glimmer of Reno. Well worth the effort!

Just the 90 minute hike I wanted today! Headed the wrong way to cross the “bridge” to get across the creek before I headed back the right way. There was only one trail and it was mostly packed dirt with some loose rocks at a couple points. I loved hearing the rushing creek as I hiked and after 15 minutes it was all mountains! A good workout, I was even able to run a little on the way down. It was well populated so I felt safe as I single 54 year old woman. Can’t wait to make it to the falls when I have more time.

Nice trail. The grade is very gentle, so not really steep at any point. The trail is initially just a spiderweb of social trails until you cross the creek, then pretty easy to follow until the waterfall.

Completed on 1/2/19. Was able to make it all the way up on snowshoes. Only one on the trail all day, great solidarity and pretty views. Snow was pretty deep and there was one sketchy river crossing, but other than that it was overall very easy.

Gorgeous trail and the waterfall was stunning. No snow for most of the trail but a few slick spots towards the end. I really enjoyed this hike and the changing plant communities.

Nice trail! Well worth going all the way. The trail starts out over populated since it’s close to the highway. Initially this makes following the trail a little challenging but becomes easy as you go. Went Jan 1st so there was a bit of ice and snow. Glad I had ice cleats. Couldn’t have done it without them. I will definitely do this trail again!

Super fun easy afternoon hike! It looks a lot steeper than it actually is and was very beautiful. There are quite a few places where the trail splits so be mindful of checking where you are! Highly recommend for a fun local hike

Incredible year round

You feel like a whole new person after dipping into the water at the end!

did this trail over the summer, everything was dried up. So summer time is not the time to go! would bet spring time would be best!

Completed on 12/23/18. The hike was very challenging, especially on snowshoes. Like other reviewes stated, it's more like 8 miles round trip. Stunning views and great solidarity at this time of year. Somewhat dangerous as well however, as it was extremely steep at parts and icy, especially at the peak. Highly suggested for advanced hikers!

We hiked about 2.5 miles into the trail on 12/23/2018. Some things to note:

-The road into the trailhead was closed about a mile out. So we had to walk an additional mile each direction to get to and from the trailhead.
-We hiked about 2.5 miles on Mt. Tallac trail, until we got above the tree line. This point was just past floating island lake. Beyond this, the snow is much deeper and requires snowshoes. We didn’t have them so we turned around here.

All of trail is covered in snow/ice, but some of it is compact enough to walk on without snowshoes. We had great views despite not being able to hike the whole trail. The weather higher up on Mt Tallac also looked to be pretty stormy, so it was probably for the best that we turned around. A beautiful hike, and I will definitely be back in warmer weather.

The hike was a little harder & longer than I had thought. It took us a total of about 4 hrs (both up and down the mountain). The view was breath taking, definitely worth it - I can’t wait to do it again once there’s snow! If you have 4WD, there’s a service road you can take that will get you 3/4 the way up the mountain (which would cut out about 2 hrs of the hike)!

Love this hike! Did it in May and again in late December. In May we got a view of tons of really colorful flowers that were on the cliff side. In December there were no flowers but we saw the hibernating lady bugs which was amazing. Be careful towards the end of the hike when you cross the fallen tree over the creek. The ladybugs are ALL around there covering every branch and on the tree stumps. We did not even see them until we were on our way back up the trail after hanging on the rocks by the river. The way back is pretty much all incline but not too steep except for short hills.

A bit muddy and icy but worth the snow trails at the top

Great hike, waterfall, view of the river nearly the entire time. There's a small path off to the right, coming in, maybe a quarter or half of the way in, and it leads to a great view on some large rocks. You have to duck a little to walk through the path. Hope you find it.

Awesome!!!! Nobody was there. (on a Sunday afternoon). Keep in mind it's a dirt path off the main road and there's a lot of ditches. When you park, you walk for about a quarter off a mile, then you start going down hill.

The hike was beautiful. I brought my dog and there were tons of ticks on him. This is definitely an intermediate hike. The way back was a bit of a challenge since it’s mostly uphill but the views made it worth it.

December on this trail is awesome. No one around, but still able to make out the path. Waterfall is iced over but scrambling up it wasn’t too bad. Really enjoyed the peace and different falls you hit as you climb.

Beautiful hike but more amazing in the snow. looks like a winter wonderland.

Ran this trail a couple of times. It's a bit grueling but worth the downhill.:)

Great hike. First mile or so is slightly difficult. Took us 3.5hrs with probably 30 minutes of breaks included.

Beautiful hike. Moderate hike even with snow early on the morning. Terrain became a little more difficult as sun came up and the snow turned to mud and ice. Waterfall is currently partially frozen but beautiful. Cannot wait to go back in the Spring.

AMAZING HIKE!!

Pros
-Great things to see the whole way up.
-Finding the trail was not too difficult.
-Everyone is very friendly on trail.

Cons
-Very rocky terrain the entire way. Make sure to wear good hiking shoes.
-Very steep and not easy. Make sure to stay hydrated, stretch, and pace yourself. I didnt do any of those and cramped up pretty hard. I was lucky people were nice enough to provide water and energy bars.

Some people brought their dogs. I thought the ground was too rocky and sharp for them. Not a good idea if your dog is not used to that.

Worth it! Just dont be an idiot like me and prepared.

Tough trail, not a warm-up by any means.

Great Hike! Dont underestimate the difficulty level. Took me 5 hours to get up and 3 to get down. Got to the car right as it was turning pitch black outside

Trail was easy to follow. The waterfall was running nice due to the recent snow/rain fall. Had a couple decent photo ops. Overall, if you’re a beginner, you won’t find this trail too difficult.
