Did this hike yesterday! Ice under footing pretty much from the start now, definitely would recommend spikes as we would have slid multiple times if not. Top has fresh snow and is about 4 feet deep at the lake. Gorgeous views!

Nature tripsGreat!Muddy

Well groomed & well marked trail. Follow the dark blue signs. The trail was pretty muddy but that was to be expected. Nice water lookouts. Heavily trafficked

This was a beautiful hike, with the best forest road I’ve ever been on leading up to it so it’s super accessible. That is also probably part of the reason it was super busy. We arrived at 8am and saw only 1 person on our way to the lake. On the way back, however, we saw about 25 parties. If you want solitude and/or don’t want to constantly have your mask on, coming at 7 would probably be perfect. Other than that, conditions were great, lots of packed snow so trekking poles are helpful but microspikes aren’t really needed.

Well traveled trail. Lots of hikers...we probably passed at least 40 on our way up to the viewpoint. The lake, as of 2/20/21, is frozen over and absolutely breathtaking. While there is snow on the trail, it is doable with poles. After the first bridge (at the 1.8 mile mark), the trail becomes easier to navigate. Happy Hiking!

Beautiful hike! Snow starts about 2 miles in- would recommend poles or spikes! The lake is frozen and so pretty. Highly recommend!

Nice hike and an even nicer day. It’s not too strenuous and the trail is clearly visible even in the snow. About halfway up it gets snowy. I saw a few people in microspikes but me and my dog made it up just fine. I got there around 9 am and the parking lot was about 75% full. It was packed by the time we got down at 1. Masks were more plentiful in the morning, more scarce as the day went on. It was nice to see so many people of all ages and abilities out enjoying the trial. It’s one of the better thing that’s come out of this pandemic... people are out in nature more, which I hope will lead to more people invested in preserving and appreciating it. If you’re wanting to “commune with nature” I suggest you don’t show up at 1 pm on a weekend day.

Beautiful views to start out but quickly lost as the trail progresses. Deep snow and slush, not quite snow shoe worthy but crampons would have been a good idea. SLOW going up and very slippery back down. Skinny dipping afterwards was a solid add on to this sluggish hike.

Gorgeous hike, but you MUST go to the confluence as well as it is idyllic in the snow. A little bit slushy going up but no snowshoes or crampons needed. Hiking polls were a good idea at points.

2/18/2021 Great trail with lots of river crossings and nice bridges to keep you out of the water! The snow on the trail was beautiful and manageable with regular hiking boots. A pair of cramp-ons would have made the never ending incline a little better and a little less slippery coming down!

A fun Olympic Forest hike, adjacent to the Big Creek Campground, and one of the easiest to access trail-systems in the area. Upper Big Creek Trail runs parallel to the Forest Rd 2419, so some sound pollution during the spring/summer is a given. A good workout with some nice views of Skinwood & North Branch creeks. Theres a few limited parking spots near the closed gate (Campground is closed in the winter time), as well as on the sides of North Lake Cushman Rd (if there's overflow). The trail was in good shape, with a few bridges over the creek beds (one of which is guarded by the infamous Skinwood Bridge troll!). Slushy snowpack from the recent storm made for a more challenging ascent, and a slower decent. If planning on hiking within the next few days as the snow melts, i'd recommend some type of traction device (YakTrax, microspikes, crampons, snowshoes etc.) as the trail was definitely slippery. All in all, a great little hike any time of year, and especially for nearby Big Creek campers during the warmer months.

Beautiful morning to get out there! Roads were fine all the way up to the icy parking lot, but no one appeared to have issues, just watch your step. The trail was slush turned to ice, micro spikes highly recommended. At mile 2.6 the trail turned to pack snow loosing the crunch underneath your step. Mile 3.6 snow gets about knee high, but was unnecessary to go any further at that point, your at the lake. As always some very rad folks out there on the Trail, PA is an awesome town!

Note: I am writing this 9 days after my actual hike, so this applies to Sunday 2/7. I’d heard great things about this trail from experienced hikers, so I was excited to try it out. However, it seems that many others have heard the same, as the trail was a superhighway of hikers-! I started around 1pm, intending to do a quick out-and-back, and actually turned around after a mile because it was just too crowded (15-20 hikers passed me on the narrow trail on their way down — many with dogs — and that’s congested city traffic by hiking standards!). I go hiking to commune with nature, so I prefer to see as few people as possible...suffice to say this was not my scene! I may try again on another non-weekend day.

SnowshoeingGreat!Snow

Sunday 2/14/21 - Roads to get there weren’t bad - No cell service at trailhead - Limited parking for 4-5 vehicles at most - Parking in snow - Bathrooms closed. Trash closed - Trail has about 10” of snow. Snow shoes would be nice but fun with just waterproof boots. Not icy. - Didn’t see anyone else. Just had a good time playing in the snow with my dog!

Awesome trail! Scenic the whole way through. It’s a pretty intense climb to the top, a few bridges over small streams. Today the fresh powder provided some traction but it was ice under the layer of snow in some areas, so spikes would be necessary on another day. GPS went all wonky and isn’t accurate for the hike.
