Fantastic.
This is like 3 separate hikes in 1.
The first mile or so is an easy walk through the slot. Great rock formations and an easy walk for any age. One person in another group did get claustrophobic and turned back.
The next 1/4 mile of so is a climb. Some trail, some stairs some switchbacks. It is a little bit of a challenge. Some smaller kids were having trouble and it is steep. The trail can be narrow with areas to pull over and let oncoming hikers pass. There was ice on the trail when we were there but it didn't cause too much problem.
The last part is on top of the mountain. Fairly flat trail with long views of the valley and other mountains. Again- beautiful.
I highly recommend this hike. The rock formations and the slot are amazing.

Amazing hike, took 2 hours because it was leisurely. I loved going in between and on top. Stunning panoramic view at the top. Really truly breathtaking.

My mom and I did this trek early in the morning on our way to Santa Fe. It’s more easy than moderate other than some elevation gain, but the tent rocks themselves are amazing to see.

Beautiful just very busy

Be sure to go to the third lake lakes two and three are above tree line. Camp near lake one. Lake one to top of my snedfles is 8.5 mile and can take 8-10 hour if you go over the ridge and down.

Hiked up to the lower lake this past weekend. Microspikes were helpful. I wore gaiters, but my partner was fine with just waterproof pants. We continued on to the second lake with the goal of making it up the pass and encountered pretty deep snow. The trail was snowed over completely and there was a good amount of post-holing and route-navigation. A snowstorm began mid-way through our hike and continued for hours so I'd expect a lot more of the trail might be covered by now. Didn't see any other parties though.

I think the "Hard" rating is a bit generous unless you don't normally hike at this altitude and grade.

It's impressive to see the road down there. Great view

What a great hike! Definitely do the slot canyon, and if you want to avoid any crowds go early morning weekdays. There was practically no one there.

Dogs not allowed on trail

Second time to hike this trail. Love seeing and visiting with people from all over the U.S. and other countries. Took more time to enjoy the views and survey the slot for the best light. Moral of this story is slow down and enjoy!

Super beautiful geology!
Be aware, hiking on a hot summer day is overwhelming, due to all the bright quartz sand, you can literally feel like you’re being cooked in the oven.
Bring water and shelter tree to tree from the sun.
just making sure you hike this in cooler weather, or plan for the extreme heat and sun.
The formations are definitely were this hike I have done it several times.

Great easy hike. A couple of places to shuffle up some rocks, but nothing my pregnant wife (2nd trimester at the time) couldn’t manage. Beautiful rock formations along the way, and fantastic views at the top. Watch out for snakes in the warm months.

Beautiful scenery and pretty easy to navigate. Highly recommended.
You will not be disappointed.

The trail was heavily trafficked on a September weekend, but the more difficult section called 'the slot' was worth fighting the crowds. Very cool formations and a nice climb to the top view point. Please wear good shoes if you go, and be aware of letting slow or fast groups pass or pull over as needed.

This is a beautiful very busy trail after a long ride on Dallas Creek Road parking can be extremely difficult.

Hiked today, 10/29/18. Take county road 7 (Dallas creek) literally until it ends. Its a bit further than the directions tell you-- but no worries you get there. I started my hike at 9:45am and reached the second lake in 3 hours. Just about 2 miles in (around the Mt. Sneffels wilderness sign) I stopped and put on my micro spikes and gaiters. Gaiters weren't needed until the VERY end and spikes were hit or miss but it definitely made it much easier to maneuver.

I made it easily to the lower lake and it was GORGEOUS. I continued on upwards to the second lake and the views of the lower lake were incredible. The snow drift was quite strong and foot prints started to get scarce and it also felt like I was being pelted with small ice from the winds on the back side of the mountain. I looked at the second lake and it was 70% frozen over so I decided to turn back as I was hiking alone. It is definitely worth traveling up there for the views of the lower lake though! If you go that high definitely spikes and gaiters this time of year!

Definitely beautiful. I only saw 2 other hikers all day which was amazing =)

As someone mentioned before, this is a great trail for an easy overnight backpacking trip. Beautiful views and fall colors. The trail is in good condition and is easy to follow. Park at the "upper" parking lot next to the road (not in the Picnic Area)- they don't care if you park overnight as long as you don't camp within 1/4 mile of the trailhead.

Hiked this trail yesterday 10-27-18. Very snowy like the previous poster said. After the first lake it got really deep and we had to turn around. It was also pretty slick after everyone had compacted the snow and melting then refreezing at night. I would be cautious, there were a few parts that were a little touch and go. On the other hand, beautiful beautiful hike!!

My brother and I were on a mission to hike this trail and find the springs! We failed the first time and somehow took a wrong turn and ended up on a strenuous hike up to a wooden teepee and campfire! It was beautiful but we really wanted to see the springs. Two days later we attempted again and finally made it! We still aren’t sure how we got so off trail the first go around! When we finally made it we were awe struck! The views are spectacular and made it all worth it! The springs were not as warm as we expected but we could have cared less because it was still amazing! We met some great people, swam around and relaxed, walked to see the falls and had lunch on a rock in the middle of the mountains. It was such a great day and I think I speak for my brother and I when I say I would highly suggest this hike to anyone!!

Absolutely beautiful. Fun climbs, stunning views. Nothing short of amazing. We went on a somewhat rainy day with a little hesitation. This trail is not to be missed.

I hiked this trail on 10/21/18. Very beautiful area. However, this 7.2 mile out and back turned into 10.5 miles due to the snow. 80% of the trail had between 2 inches - 2.5 feet of snow. The snow and ice made the hike very difficult. Unless you’re experienced with snow hiking and snowshoes, I would not advise the hike until the snow melts. In the end, the snow got so deep, we couldn’t even make it the last 400 meters to grand lake.

One note though is that the first mile of the hike is easy (if no snow) and takes you to a beautiful small waterfall and small lake.

I would echo the comment about “no kids”. Rocky entrance to the springs and very slippery. Additionally, Birthday suits were worn by many.

The views of the river are breathtaking. My dog had a great time climbing and splashing. Relaxed in the hot springs with my boyfriend for about an hour. Wonderful experience. The pools are warm enough to be comfortable, but not too hot to make you sweat.
We were sore from hiking Lobo Peak the day before. Great way to end our vacation.

Amazing hike through the slot canyons and a great view at the top. The canyon can be narrow at times so you have to watch your footing on the way down to avoid possibly twisting an ankle. Was hard not to take a lot of photos!

Fantastic hike!

Absolutely incredible trail. We had to wait a little while at the entrance as they limit the number of people on the trail. During the drive in we saw a tarantula making it's way across the road. The trail starts off easy and gradually becomes more narrow. It was very crowded, even on a Friday morning. You'll have to stop often to let people pass. The formations are amazing, as well as the trees that grow in the canyon. The rocks against the blue sky is breathtaking. Towards the end of the Slot Canyon Trail, the climb becomes tougher, there is some scrambling and actual climbing. The 360° view on top is absolutely incredible and worth the climb. Bring water, there is no shade and since it is so dry, you will need it. I highly recommend this trail!

So scenic!!! I advise sturdy hiking boots though. Saw an injury and too many people hiking in shoes that could easily cause a fall or ankle twist.

How to get your kids into hiking.

Slot Canyon trail was excellent. I went early (arrived around 0845) and was glad I did. 35 degrees when I started and 74 degrees by the time I finished. Some parts of the slot canyon really only allow for one way traffic so I’m glad I really only had to deal with the heavier foot traffic on my way down. A bit steep near the top, but the views are worth it! Bring hand sanitizer in case there isn’t anymore left in the bathroom at the trailhead.

Great, easy trail, steep at the end but not for long. Took two hours total to go up to the peak, relax for a bit, then make our way down and around the cave loop. Only issue is the narrow trail through the slot canyon slows you down when you meet traffic.
