if you have never seen badlands, it is a must. if you have seen badlands, it is still a must. the juxtaposition between the other worldly formations and the Kansas prairie is just amazing. very easy 3 miles if you do both trails.
easy walk nice views
Trail is well maintained and in good condition. It has been expanded to a wide double track. Lots of wildlife in the early morning. This trail is actually a 2.5 mile out and back with a loop around a pond.
8/10. I realize this would be 4/5, but I believe this should be rated closer to 4.7 based on ratings I’ve seen on this site, and so I find 5/5 to be more accurate. But this is a truly amazing hike. Very short and easy. But the rock formations are great. Definitely worth the short drive from the highway. As someone who has driven from Kansas to CO many times, I can’t believe that I had not stopped before this. WELL worth the detour. I’d also definitely recommend going at sunset if possible. Also I just read reviews about mud. This was not an issue, but if you are afraid of getting stuck.....walk. It’s a hike.
If you happen to be in the area, this is a great stop for a short run or hike. Easy trail with a beautiful end. This is inside of Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park and there is. self pay $5 entrance fee.
Interesting and unique landscape. Certainly hard to believe you’re in Kansas. Very nice trail and park. Somewhat disappointing that the trail couldn’t go down to the bottom. I get that they want to conserve and preserve it, but there are numerous little corners of the canyon where the trail could have went to the bottom for a short and unobtrusive section. To me, canyons are best appreciated from the bottom. Still a very worthwhile destination.
Absolutely incredible
I didn't go for the hike. A little stop on way home. The rock formations are a wonder of beauty out on the open plains!!
Great trail to walk on! Trail is very well marked and maintained.
Easy and very pretty
Bathrooms are out, was very windy and cannot go down to the trenches, but still was pretty! Would recommend to go to if in the area but not the sole reason for a trip
Found directions online coming from the east. Was a little confusing but found it without getting lost. Luckily had 4 wheel drive so could get to the rocks. If not in a 4 wheel drive capable vehicle definitely go the west way around once in the pasture. Was pretty and could do easy or more difficult trials but didn’t see a set long trail.
Amazing views. Easy trail if you want it to be but also opportunities to get off the path and do some scrambling and elevation hiking. Went when it was very dry and had no issues driving back in there. If wet, you can walk the roads that aren’t maintained and get there quickly still.
Stunning view of weathered chalk rock formations. Trail is hot and windy in summer so bring some water. Has restroom at trailhead. Kiosks along trail very informative.
Pretty uneventful walk.
An easy beginner trail. Little shade so bring your water!
Cool views of the rock formations but no drinking water and only 2 trails
OMG what a beautiful day to do a hike. It’s absolutely gorgeous here the weather was perfect
Must have 4WD vehicle which is why I gave this 4 stars. Beware and be prepared. Definitely worth seeing but we were unprepared in FWD high top van. You cannot turn around once you start down these terrible roads. They are not maintained and we could have flipped the van. BUT the badlands are amazing and worth the trip. Be safe!
Awesome time with my girls. Trail was dry and weather perfect for August. Worth the drive from northeast Kansas.
We enjoyed this short walk through some pretty grassland with nice views of the reservoir. It's not super exciting, but it's a good way to get a short Kansas experience and stretch your legs, which is what we wanted on our cross-country drive. We also really hoped to see prairie dogs, and didn't on the trail but on our way out realized that what appears to be the prairie dog colony is right across the road from the trailhead. There were many prairie dogs in that area running around and going in and out of their tunnels, which was super cool to watch, especially if you have some binoculars! It also looked like there was an observation area of sorts, so you should stop there before or after the hike. It's right before you get to the turn for the trailhead, looks like a little picnic shelter.
Neat little place.
This trail is beautiful and serene
