Took the backside trail up to the top, that side is in much better condition right now. Took the frontside trail still has snow mixed with lots of mud, definitely need yaktraks/crampons. As luck would have it, there’s a stray pair on the top somewhere, lost mine on the way down! Poles were also helpful.

4/12 Went out on a bluebird day and it was just gorgeous. The trail is still covered in snow, and by the time we returned in the late afternoon the snow was pretty soft and we started postholing quite a bit. Will definitely do this hike again once the snow is melted and the lake is open!

i love this glacier super easy and doable for any person.. trail is pretty visible you just have to go over two hills and boom you are there.

Super slippery today. I had micro spikes and they didn’t help much. Some parts of the trail still have deeper snow. Amazing views. Stay to the right when choosing the loop to ascend if you want a steadier climb.

Great easy hike, fun and enjoyable. Ice cave are beautiful, make sure before you go out you check the avalanche risk for the time.

Beautiful hike with great views of suicide peaks! I see people mountain biking this trail alot also.

I did this hike a couple summers ago. It was a tough hike but was totally worth it especially on a clear day. I did it in late August and a flock of about 30 sandhill cranes flew over top of us as they were heading back south for the winter.

My favorite hike

Hiked on 2-10-2018 for the first time. Just moved here from GA, no experience with hiking at all. This was our first hike here in Alaska.

It took my boyfriend and I about 3 hours to complete. We brought our 10 month old in the baby backpack. We kept a nice slow pace, pushing through a couple times on the steeper parts. Weather was nice, however the sun was not out this day. Once we got about 100 yards to the summit I decided to hang back on the rocks with baby. Basically 2 options to the summit - fresh deep snow or rock scrambling. I was not comfortable with either. Boyfriend did reach the top. It started snowing and was quite foggy at this point. Still a beautiful experience. We wore our micro spikes for extra traction - not much ice at all. However we found ourselves wishing we had trekking poles. Met 5 pairs of hikers along the way, 3 of those brought their dogs along. It was a great time.

Simply amazing. Completed on 2-10-18 at the peak of winter! Slight overcast in the morning, but a great day weather-wise. After you make it to the rock pyramid it's a whole new ball game...we hit the summit (being led by mountain goats part of the way) and could see O'Malley, Tikishla, Mount Williwaw, Knoya Point, and 'ol trusty Rusty. Mt. Susitna was clearly visable, and was another reference as to how far back you have to go to reach the peak.Views were spectacular! You really get to step back and see Anchorage and Fire Island in a picturesque manner. McKinley (Denali) and Foraker were veiled...

Good hike but not sure where ice caves were. Climbed big boulders then came back. Later found out ice caves were further past boulders on right. Need to go back now.

Lots of fun and beautiful scenery! Cleats necessary this time of the year.

great hike , a lot snow , some parts icy but I general great hike and the view amazing!!

Nice short hike. Had to climb over a lot of boulders for the last 500 yards or so to get to the bottom of the glacier, but the ice caves were amazing!!!

It’s a nice trail..tons of berries and gorgeous landscape

Awesome!! Ice caves were beautiful !!!!! Take head lamps to really explore the caves!! Going back!!

Great Hike with great views of Denali on a clear day, the top had a little rock scrambling. Some young GIs had climbed the same day to change out the american flag.

nice steady climb. scenic views overlooking anchorage and fire Island. watch for loose rocks towards the end.

Beautiful scenery. What a quick easy hike to do when you are in the area. We were able to walk right up to the glacier since everything was frozen.

Hiked this trail in June of 2015, not too difficult but pretty steep as you near the top, and looser rocks too. It was a nice hike and offered a good view of Anchorage.

Perfect time of year to explore the ice caves. The river is mostly frozen and the caves appear stable as evidenced by lack of ice fall. Recommend quality ice grippers and poles. The valley is in shade all day and it can be windy. The Begich-Boggs visitor center is closed for the season.

It can be a bit of a struggle after the first few miles, but the end is really rewarding.

So living in anchorage I usually avoid this trailhead. It attracts lots of tourists so it’s a little overcrowded for my taste, but still a great hike. I went mid day during some crappy weather, and so glad I did! Not many people were around and the “rain” was just light showers that would come and go and the clouds would part, didn’t even need my hood on..yet anyway. Beautiful colors since it’s towards the end of fall, steady incline in the beginning but i wouldn’t say it’s too hard. Lots of stairs before hitting the rock climbing. There was snow at the time and started snowing while I
Was up there. Absolutely amazing and glad I took my chance. Still had nice views when the clouds would part. The hike was just a blast

We were visiting from Hawaii and did this hike on a clear day and the views were absolutely beautiful!

Highly-trafficked but very accessable. bring a hat and jacket for the top as it can get very windy! Great views on the Inlet and beyond on a nice day. I recommend doing this trail as a sunset hike, bring a headlamp and avoid to crowds for a golden-hour view of the Chugach. It isn't a long hike but it is moderately strenuous during the last ascent. Make a day of it and explore the ridge lines beyond Flattop towards Ptarmigan
