What a gorgeous trail! It's pretty steep to the first lake (5mi round trip) but significantly less steep to get to the second, larger like (8mi round trip). Totally worth going that extra 1.5 miles. We also found wild raspberries!

Absolutely beautiful scenery & an easy hike for our group. The fall colors were starting to show (mid-September) and we didn’t encounter any bugs...or bears. There is little to no shade, so definitely wear a hat and bring sunscreen. You’ll want to take photos! This might be in my Top 5 for day hikes in the Beartooths given the incredible views.

Great exercise, and the view at the lake is breathtaking! Lake is freezing, but there are plenty of deer and other wildlife to be seen on the way. Running shoes worked during the summer-
Busy trail with a lot of families, but still recommend

Great hike. Set some time aside to enjoy all the cut outs and views of the river. Saw deer and a Bear way in the distance. Great work out.

Really nice hike! Lots of switchbacks and decently steep, but nothing someone who loves hiking can’t handle.

We went on Sept. 1st and the trail was great. It got quite windy at the lake but a light jacket was fine for that. The trail was short enough that the rapid elevation didn't tire me as much as I'd anticipated. I think it's closer to 5 miles out & back though. Will do this hike again next year!

P.S. I was worried about the road driving out there from everything I've read, but my AWD Ford Edge had no problems reaching the trailhead.

Absolutely loved it ! I did continue on the trail several miles further and it was all worth it
If your debating weather or not to do this. Do it you will regret nothing.

Nice hike but there is no sign off main trail to Lake. I was able to use the AllTrails App map to show me the exact place to turn left. Otherwise I might not have been able to find it.

Very pretty trail! Word of advice— as you walk along the creek, keep an eye out for the makeshift bridge, or you’ll end up leap frogging logs only to find a dead end. Maybe that’s a newbie mistake, but it cost me 20 minutes round trip haha. This is towards the beginning of the trail, when you’re right beside the creek in the trees. I’d also recommend going to the second lake; while the first lake is cute and scenic, it is more the size of a very large pond. The second lake is a proper mountain lake, located in a small crater with large mountains rising beside it. Worth the trip.

Awesome!

As the description says, it's heavily trafficked, even fairly early in the morning. However, if you don't mind crowds, and love pristine, calm, blue mountain lakes, and a waterfall or two, it's absolutely worth seeing. Great birding, great place for kids to splash around the beaches, and plenty of fly fishing opportunities.

Fantastic view. Lots of people though even in the late evening and little parking.

Well maintained trail. Raspberries, and Huckleberries just off the trail. Hiked to Elk Lake, bring big spray.

Great hike but the real beauty is in the first mile or two waking along the river. The views throughout are amazing but the lake at the end is slightly underwhelming. Still an amazing trail and very easy to do!

Excellent trail with breathtaking scenery. Cool temperatures at the start beside the rapids. I recommend jeans or comfortable pants due to heavy foliage at certain spots. Trail is fairly busy for about the first mile. It is a horse trail as well, so watch for the droppings. I did the trek to the Flood Creek Bridge which is 10 miles round-trip. Small children may tire quickly within the first mile. Bring two bottles of water and some trail mix. Remember to bring all your trash back out with you. Happy Trekking!!!

Absolutely beautiful trail, perfect for a leisurely hike.

Avalanche lake is a beautiful hike! The trail is built for lots of people so it is fairly wide. The river runs along the trail majority of the way! Once you get to the lake, keep going to the other side! Only one other person was there. We had a deer that came so close we could almost pet it! Very cool and quiet! Started around 7am and there were only a few others on the trail! The parking lot fills up by 8am! Passed lots of people on the way down! Lots of families! Go early if you want some peace and quiet! Definitely recommend!

This would be a good hike for a family that couldn't do the harder and longer hikes. But that's only if you're prepared -- it's still almost a 6 mile hike. As people are saying, it is very crowded so I'd start no later than 7-7:30 am. if you don't want to see people. (Although I don't think many people will be allowed on this trail for quite some time due to the fires in the west right now.) Still a beautiful lake and worth doing if you're in the area.

Simple hike with stunning views the entire journey out to Elk Lake. Plenty of waterfalls on your way out to the Lake, and a breathtaking view of the valley once you're there. And if your hot, or bold, hop in the lake and enjoy the fresh mountain water! You won't need a coffee after 10 seconds in there!

Easy hike! Breathtaking views!!

Beautiful. Lots of traffic. For a short hike this has exceptional views. I love the entire journey through the forest not just the view at the end :).

Great Hike! Be sure to cross the creek when the trail sign says keep left. It was very dark when we went and didn’t see the makeshift bridge that was back a ways. We ended up taking a big detour to find the trail again.

Perfect family hike— 8 year olds enjoyed. The waterfalls are beautiful.

Hiked to Avalanche Lake.
This hike was tied in with the trail of Cedars hike. The old growth trees all the way to the lake are just incredible. There are three different types as you can see in the photographs. A fairly easy hike that can be used as a recovery day between the tough ones.
If you swim in the lake, check your toes when you get out for leeches. The water is not very active so they can find you very easily

crowded, but beautiful

Beautiful Hike! Too crowded later in the day for my taste but stunning, just stunning!

This is such a stunning hike. It climbs through forest along a river with rapids and waterfalls. Eventually you pass an avalanche area and then you come to Avalanche Lake which is a true gem. The water is crystal clear and bright blue. The mountains surrounding it are stunning and there are tons of waterfalls cascading down the cliffs. Truly lovely.

You can continue past the initial viewpoint for another mile or so to see more of the lake. I recommend it. Every angle offers something new.

This was a very nice hike. Watched a black bear foraging across the lake. Good view at the lake of the falls. Worth the extra hike to the top of the lake for a nice view. Got to the trail head by 7:30am for parking, light traffic on the trail at that time. Very traffic heading to the lake on my return. Returned from the hike at 10:30, and the parking was full.

Definitely a quick and easy hike, but very, very popular and crowded. I am amazed that the trail is as wide as it is and people still do not understand the concept of treat it like a two lane US Hwy (we are in the US, so keep to your right). If it narrows, yield to the hikers coming UP. This is an easy hike, which means trail runners use it, so be aware and move out of the way. It is about courtesy.
