We love to come here! Great trail for new drivers but still fun for those experienced!

i haven't been on West Phillips Drive in about 10 years. It is much more challenging now after years of getting washed out. I made it pretty easily in a mostly stock Jeep JK on 35's.

I just drove this trail in the wife’s Lexus RX350, in Oct 2018. As everyone is trying to find a parking spot a the Bixby Bridge lookout, and I mean everyone. We made the turn and kept going. It’s a easy graded dirt road and 4wheel drive is not even needed to pass but why not put it in. It’s a great SUV/Outback type trail that will get your car dirty. There is ups and down and beautiful views that you cannot see from the highway . It’s well worth the 12 miles of back road with gorgeous scenery in the redwoods, grasslands, chapperel .

Follow the signs for the Phillips Petroleum. When you get to the entrance veir oo to the right and follow the single lane road across the RR tracks.

Found out why it's called the Sand trail. it's very soft sand. My stock Sahara didn't have the right tires for it once I was deep into the trail. I was barely able to turn around and get out.

I Ran this trail with some friends, one 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, another in a 2018 Wrangler Rubicon 4 door and yours truly in an 08 wrangler sport 2 door. I have a 2.5 inch lift on 35s. aired down to 18psi. and had a blast!
the last part before you get to Dutchmans Camp. is the scariest part. but take your time it's about skill not speed. bring plenty of water, food, snacks. theres no cell phone reception for most of the trail so DONT GO ALONE!

We enjoyed the views from this trail. Some areas are a little steep but we never had to take our vehicle out of 4 high. In fact I would take any 2 wheel drive SUV or pick up on this trail

Easy trail to go thru in any kind of truck. Drove in through the south Big Sur entrance and came out by Bixby Bridge. Plenty of great views along the way!

We entered Coast Rd just north of the Andrew Molera State Park. There is no gate there. We drove in about 7 miles and then turned around because we weren’t sure if the exit would be gated. It was a great opportunity to go off reading.

Nice trail, great redwoods (not old growth). We parked at the trailhead on the right. After we hiked about 100 ft and turned around we realized we should have drove around the corner and parked on the left. The trail seemed to degrade after the 3rd stream crossing at 1.4 miles so at that point we turned around.

Had a great day yesterday! We ran the trail with 9 rigs, no issues, no damage. It’s a fun day run for sure.

Did it today with a pretty much stock 2018 Rubicon all I have is 3/16” steel rock sliders for oil pan, trans pan, lower control arms, gas tank skid, front and rear diff skids aired down the stock tires to 24 psi and off I went by myself.
I used my lockers maybe a handful times front and rear.
I recommend to have at least 12” of clearance and 32” up if you know how to drive, of course if you go bigger the easier it is but then it’s not as challenging for a good driver, I took my time all by myself today single Rig no spotter just me and made it with just a few little scratches on my skids oh plus one rim right before the Camp side on the top watch that narrow spot when the trail actually ends bitch got me on the right rear!!

I drove this trail in a lifted 4Runner. I read the reviews here first and I can say that it was pretty challenging and at times a bit of a nail biter! Not sure if it was I good idea but I went alone, without a spotter :). I dented up the underside of the Toyota and had lots of fun. Most definitely an adventure!

I drove all the way up there thinking “yeah it’s gonna be a hard trail but nothing my Tacoma can’t handle” turns out you really have to have a beefed up truck with rock sliders and bigger tires, and maybe a air compressor for when you air down. Ended up not doing it but did another down the hill with a easy sign attached to it. If your considering going, I would definitely have something like a Jeep or a lifted truck.

I had the same problem as the last review and tried to find the start but ran into the Phillips 66 refinery. I asked the Guard if he knew of any openings in the fence but he said "no". I checked along the fence line and the gates were well locked up and some even had additional fencing behind it. I drove in through the Pismo beach area and it looked like a lot of it had been cordoned off but orange construction fencing. Talked with a Park Ranger and they stated they are trying to preserve and restore areas of the beach. You can still get back in the area, but I HIGHLY recommend bring a full set of MaxxTaxx or traction aids. Beautiful and quiet area though.

I was overlanding and came up the back way (south side) through the Fergusson road and only got 9 miles in by truck before I hit hiking trails only. The trail was blocked by two thick wooden posts, and I walked a half a mile in up the trail and it was narrow (hiking single file). We had to turn around and come back to the coast. We also checked out the north way in but saw that it was hiking trails only. Beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and I did not any other paths for off road vehicles in the area, both visually and by GPS (Garmin, Hema Maps, and Gaia).

Beautiful view but the gate was closed and locked very well with private property signs all over the fence. I did not even see a path for bikers or hikers.

Calico is full of trails, so I think I missed a couple of miles of this trail, but super easy. I’m in a stock Jeep and made it through with ease.

first time I did this trail I had a blast. second time I did this was a 10pm night run. it's long, it will take you a solid 2-3 hours depending how your rig is and how confident you are. 95% of it is easy, but the 5% will put any Toyota to its test if you choose the hard lines. I took it all with ease in my jeep wrangler. any stock jeep can do this trail easily, no lockers needed. towards the end of trail into camp ground, it looks intimidating for a first time experience, but all the rocks are solid in place and make for easy crawling through. none lifted Toyotas will have a bit of challenge but hey, get out and lay down a rock to make some stepping stones.. but try to kick them out after so the jeep guys can still enjoy the technical fun stuff :)

We have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler with a 3” lift and 33” tires. No lockers. We entered from Lockwood valley and popped out at the top of hungry valley. The trail was challenging at the beginning and at the end with large rocks and steep terrain. The last 2 miles are very challenging and slow going. Tight trails with some scratches from bushes. After this trail we added lockers and will be heading back out again. Plan on a full day of wheeling and don’t do it alone.

Made it out to the same spot in a FWD crv fun ride great scenery definitely need a higher clearance for the hill down after this.

Great trail! Mostly a rocky wash, with a few steep outcrops to climb. Great geology to see. Ran the trail in a 4th gen 4Runner with 3-inch lift and 33" AT tires, no issues. I would not recommend in a stock height 4x4, you'll take a beating.

Went up there today with stock 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport 4 door factory Goodyear tires aired down to 29 psi we made it further then the junction of Yellow Jacket about another mile from there on up to the Miller Jeep trail. I tell you, don’t do it without a spotter or some experience. It is not recommended with the rig I had but it was fun even I had to bow down and turn around it was still a good time with the wife. All beginners be aware especially with stock rig!!!

Has some more difficult sections that you don't have to take. A fun day out from LA
Watch out for turtles and give them the road.

The road is open to bicycles and hikers per Andrew molera state beach ranger January 2018.

Says here that this trail is accessible year round; however, today when we went there there were large rocks on the ground that were blocking the entrance to vehicle traffic.

Drove in off Lockwood Valley road, 3 Jeep Wrangler 4 doors, JKU, 2 were Rubicons.
All had 3.5"lift and 37's or 35" tires.
First time 4 wheeling a Jeep for all of us, though we all have off roading experience. Made it to the top of Alamo Mtn. via Miller Jeep Trail.
It was a fun day with challenging hills with big boulders all over. Take the right line and it's pretty manageable. 4x4 lo, no locker and made it up to the top.
Next time we'll bring the wives now we know what to expect.

Lots of technical parts if you follow this route. Went in a raptor and needed a spotter and 4x4. Def easier in an ATV. Once you turn to go to tunnel it is easy going.

Amazing trail. Vader, my JKUR, worked its way just shy of half way with ease. Had to turn back due to time constraints but I can't wait till I get the chance to take on the whole thing.
