Lovely trail, excellent views. The most challenging aspect of it is the elevation gain, but if you have a lot of hiking experience, I definitely wouldn't rate it as moderate. It's a good trail for less experienced individuals or those just getting into hiking!

Definitely not the easiest scramble down and up. But the pools are amazing to swim in. The views are great as well. But, the suggestion about high tides is probably a good one. Having the waves crash just a few feet away was really cool, but you definitely do not want to get caught by one.

Very cool spot with several natural pools. We did not go down to the pools, just stood above at the look out. The signs before going down made us a bit frightened to try and venture down there but there were several people down there you just have to be smart. It switchbacks down the mountain to get to the pools. Very rocky, wear hiking shoes/boots

More challenging than described . Disappointed with the final lookout.

Planned on running it but ended go hiking due to all the mud. It was still worth it and had amazing views.

Good work out

Great trail for intermediate mountain biking. A few tough spots but well worth the ride to Berry Creek falls. Saw plenty of friendly hikers and a few other bikers.

It's sooooo beautiful! just be careful, it can be really slippery!

Great hike: shaded, redwoods and a little incline. About 1 hour 20 minute hike.

Hike was better than I expected. Even though it is not a rain season, still pretty good waterfalls. Curiously my GPS showed roundtrip to be just under 15 miles. Not sure how to account for discrepancy.

Nice relatively short hike. It gets pretty muddy so I'd recommend good shoes (probably not sandals). I'd bring hiking poles for the way down if you have them but definitely not necessary. It took about an hour to get to the top and over an hour coming back down. I went in the morning and the peak was covered in clouds (and rain) but it cleared up by the time I got back to the bottom. It was still a beautiful hike on the way up despite the clouds at the end. If you're lucky enough to have a clear day, the views should be spectacular. Oh and a bonus if you're planning to call a ride share service for the ride back to town: nearly the entire trail has cell coverage.

We did this on october 27. The views are absolutely briliant. Very hard towards the peak. Steep and a lot of stairs. The beauty of all of the hike is breathtaking. Took us 8 hours. :) we went up the fern trail and oh boy was it hard. Like super hard.

A nice trail going thru different temparature zones and resulting ecosystem. if its the rainforest like feel in the deep ravine trail, its the virtual hard rubble brush in the upper fern creek trail. Would rate it as an easy to moderate depending upon the hiking level. we are an east bay based hiking group and have trained on the mt. diablo for longer hikes. comparitively this is mellow and not much challenges . the only difference was the length which makes it seem tougher. The climd upto panatoll staging area is very scenic and lively. beyond depending upon the path you take - old grade road or matt davis trail to upper fern creek - it can be easy or tough. we took the fire road and it turned out to be an easy hike, except for the sun which was out hot and bright,. the view from the top is amazing and worth the hike. on the way back took the rock scamble behind the lookout and then the fern creek trail. it was a good downward trail, well maintained. the trail from panatoll to the beach thru matt davis travis is mostly smooth except for the switchbacks which caused the max strain. overall a good long hike.

Love love LOVE going down to the mermaid pools!
It’s a nice place to swim if the tide is low, don’t get in if the waves are big or if any sets are rolling in- it can be SUPER dangerous.

Tough hike but beautiful

Really fun trail and has beautiful views. Went on morning hike and it was raining the entire hike up. No views on the way up. Just rain and clouds, but the hike was still fun! Very slippery b/c much of the ground is either red clay, rock or both. It can also be very muddy. The path can be both straight or winding; uphill and downhill; muddy and rocky. My downhill trek had more views because the clouds were dispersing. I almost ran back to the top, but the summit still had no visibility. Heading downhill in the wet conditions was tough. Take your time and be careful because some parts are narrow. Was able to see the waterfalls and river on my descent. Beautiful hike with benches at vista points along the way.

Wow wow wow! A must in Maui. Breathtaking, humbling views. We went on some pretty cool hikes on the island but this was the most amazing. It is more challenging but very doable for many fitness levels. Wear good shoes though!

Resumed hiking after 2 years with this one. We also followed counter clockwise. About 4 hours we completed with few stops. It was difficult but I was able to complete. falls, birds, redwoods and you will enjoy.

great hike!

Amazing views! Great way to see the ridge line of the mountains. You’ll see long range views of a waterfall and the coastline as well. It’s about a 1,600 foot elevation gain, prepare to sweat, but the views are worth it. I would wear hiking boots as well. The trail is very slick.

Amazing!!!!

Awesome views!

Great trail even for my second visit I enjoyed the trail. As other reviews mention, proper foot wear is important as is can get a bit muddy after some rain. At a decent pace it's about an hour to the top with great views along the way. Don't be disappointed if you reach the top and are surrounded by clouds, the trip is well worth it as you are likely to meet great people along the way as my fiancee and I did this go around. Mahalo, Beto.

Excellent hike with excellent views! Bring your water and a camera.

These tide pools are so cool! I would suggest going during low tide just to be safe. There are warnings at the top which are a little uneasy to read but just be smart when you're down there and that's why I'd suggest low tide. We were able to swim in a large pool that was well over our heads and felt safe since no waves were crashing over the rocks at the time. The hike is rocky so I would suggest closed toes shoes plus, the rocks are slippery at the bottom due to moss and being under water part of the time. Water shoes would be ideal. The hike down isn't terribly steep but you will be hiking in full sun so dress accordingly!

Awesome trail! Very lush and incredible scenery at every turn. Can’t wait to do it again.

Great hike. Views were amazing. Too bad the clouds rolled in when we hit the top. Accurately rated as moderate. Took us 2 hours. Great workout too.

A bit tough. I’d take everyone’s advice and do counterclockwise, we unfortunately did the opposite per the rangers suggestion and we only saw one other couple doing it this way. Much easier doing it counterclockwise and I know why now. Beautiful place and waterfalls are amazing to see.

Great trail! The start is a steep incline on a paved sidewalk.... A few feet afterwards you go through a trail gate and the real hike begins. There were some spots where the incline was steep but nothing too slippery or difficult. There are spots with seats or outlooks to rest. Make sure you have water for hydration.
