Great views with not very many people around

In town for work and decided to go hiking, 'cause you know, I could use some exercise. It is a tough hike if you are out shape. But, it is worth it. The parking lot, as everyone else mentions is packed. I got there around 8:30 and had to park about 20 yards down the road so there is a lot of traffic on the trail. Well worth it, though. If you are looking for good pics. later in the day is better to have the sun at your back for the views of the surrounding peaks. The trail goes around the lake but it can be lost at times so you may have to bushwhack it a little. While I may be walking pretty slow tonight and I look a little funny walking, the hike is worth it. Definitiely recommend it.

Easily the best day hike near Seattle! We got there a little late in the day, around noon. The parking lot was full so we parked about half mile away from the trail head. The hike starts off easy, the first 1.5 miles are easy but beware of roots and rocks. Once you cross the Stuart and colchuck lake intersection, the trail gets a little harder. The last patch gets pretty rocky. The views are amazing! We went on a sunny day, although it was cold and windy near the lake. I didn’t think the hike was hard as such, more like a long moderate hike. Also, seems like the trail is longer than the distance on all trails. My tracker showed 9.8 miles out and back. This didn’t include the walk around the lake or the walk from my car to the trailhead. It took us 3 hours up and 2 hours back down. Amazing hike! Definitely go for it!

Great post-Labor Day time for a hike, thought the lot was still just full when we arrived around 9:00.
TRAIL - Good steady uphill on a fairly rocky trail, but it is kept up perfectly given the obvious traffic this thing gets. As you can see from the recordings, the thing gets a little sporty at the end. I'm 55 and in okay shape, but my heart didn't get worked so hard I couldn't speak.
LAKE - crazy color to that water, even with overcast lighting. Lots of places to take some lunch and explore, with a great flat rock just left(south) of center when you get to the lake.
OVERALL - wonderful view, no bugs, cool weather; what's not to love

awesome hike!

Amazing lake!!

Best 30 bucks I have ever spent. It was even worth spending most of the day looking for that darn Forest Service road #1997. Thank goodness for locals with USFS maps. 10 year old had a blast too. He is still talking about the owl that flew up and changed direction directly over us.

Turnoff is a little hard to find. We had to go past where maps told us to go. Very easy hike! We took a group of 5 kids. The hike is roughly 3 miles round trip unless you go around the lake which is very steep and tough. The view is incredible.

Great place to get out on a minutes notice. Close to town, easy access.

This was a beautiful and unexpected hike! You could even wade through the water a bit to get over to a cool picnic/camping area. Still quite a few bees but a nice and challenging hike!

This is one of the best hikes in this area - and probably the best day hike. We did this along with Stuart Lake and the mountain views and the water color were breathtaking

so gorgeous!

A sublime autumn hike! Had the trail to ourselves and relished the stunning views. Previous reviewers referenced downed trees across the trail but we encountered none (evidence of recently cut trees; thx USFS). An excellent workout. Still a few wasps and of course I was stung but that didn't detract from the trail's beauty. My only complaint is the abundance of trash on the beach. Utterly disappointing that people would leave this otherwise pristine place with their mess.

Fun hike, and easy! I just did it and am only 6 weeks post partum!

One of my favorite hikes in the PNW. It's a very popular trail, so get there early. Leave yourself at least 5 hours to complete the trail, but give yourself more time if you want to stay at the lake for a bit. Try to go on a sunny day as the water looks a brighter shade of blue in the sunlight.

This is an amazing hike worth every step. I highly recommend this trail.

Pros: Close to Spokane, gradual incline, leads to impressive vistas at Rocks of Sharon area, good for trail running Cons: Not very challenging, can be dry and hot in summer,
A friend and I did this route late in the evening in early Sep. 2018. The actual hike itself is pretty easy, and the access road is very well marked and paved. The trail ascends parallel to the creek of its namesake for a ways, then breaks out into some short switchbacks, then you follow a ridge towards the Rocks of Sharon area, which offers some impressive vistas of the land where the forest meets the Palouse of Washington. We managed to watch the sunset from here, then followed the continuation of the loop , using headlamps, through scrub brush back to the trailhead. This would be an ideal trail for trail running, and/or an alternate access to Rocks of Sharon that is closer to Spokane. For someone looking for a spectacular trail with significant ascent, this does not offer that.

lots of fun. Beautiful view.

My go-to hike in Spokane. Great trail. Not too far from town. Short enough to do after work in the summers. Great views of both the Palouse and Spokane. Couldn’t ask for more!

Good hike. Great views. I agree with the previous reviews - it is not worth it to hike around the lake. I reached the lake quicker than I anticipated... It’s a little less than 2 miles to get up to the lake.

Fantastic hike. Certainly a tad sketchy in places. At the waterfall look for the arrow pointing up what amounts to a very steep rock slide. Go slow and watch your footing. Bear sign was on the trail so be prepared with some spray and make noise. The lake was wonderful and I could have spent all day just sitting there. I would do it again!

Not much to see on most of the hike, but when you get on top your rewarded with a spectacular view of Lake Pend Orielle and the surrounding mountains including Scotchman Peak. What makes this hike hard is the fact that it’s a roller coaster climb that is as easily hard to get to the top, but just as hard or even harder on the way out. Wish the trails wouldn’t be so damn rocky, or else this trail would be a lot easier on the feet.

As mentioned previously, lots of options as far as trails to the top. Easy access to parking and a restroom at the lookout. looking forward to spending time there this winter.

Beautiful hike. Very well maintained trail. Had a little FuzzNgrub at the lakeshore. Definitely going back!
