If you you like to hike single file with screaming children just to look at some sad algae filled puddles, this hike is for you. Seriously, you can do better. stay to the left instead of going to the third “pool” and just hike from Grotto to the Lodge or the other way around.

Beautiful views. Best to access from Kayenta Trail and go up to the upper pools. Lots of people.
Almost feel bad giving this less than max stars as the last 0.25 mile is as good as it gets; however, it is quite a trek in. Last half is still very pretty but the whole hike is slow going with Boulder hopping, some bushwhacking, fallen trees, and dozens of river crossings. Normally I’d love that wilderness dynamic but several miles of it gets a bit old esp with young kids and a baby carrier. Also, the Subway portion is only a couple hundred feet before it’s wet above the waist and soon an impassable waterfall. In short, it’s an all day workout for 0.5 hour of amazement
If you are staying at the Lodge near this hike and are doing a family trip with kids I would recommend this hike, other than that I would go to other trails less crowded.
