First time hiking there. Views are great but we had no idea where we were walking since there are no signs and so many ways to go (saw only a couple signs in the bottom). We didn't want to get lost so, we came down but came out to someone’s drive way!
We talked a guy who was walking, and he told us how to stay on the right trial. We will try it again some time soon.

Gorgeous views but you have to work for it! The fall colors are in full effect & we were surprised to be greeted by snow along certain sections of the trail.

The start of the trail is quite steep & definitely gets your heart pumping & calves burning. The scenery is beautiful & the lake at the end is worth the work. Certain parts of the trail weren't marked as well as others but there were several groups of hikers so we followed the footprints in the snow higher up.

Wonderful day hike!

We did a group hike on a beautiful day. The views go on forever and the alpine lakes were gorgeous. Tail was easy to moderate and easy to follow.

Loved this trail and felt the only challenging part was crossing the mountainside boulder fields on the way up to Ball Lake. We saw wolf tracks near each of these alpine lakes. The only down side was the last few miles on the drive up. Road was pretty rocky and rutted.

This was my first mountain trail. I probably bit off a little more than I should have as a novice, but I made it. It’s such a beautiful place and I highly recommend. I would think this should be listed as hard though. There are a lot of loose rocks and the trail was pretty hard, even some areas where you have to climb over some boulders. There’s a great view about a half mile down from the top, and the rest of the trail is pretty difficult. The lake at the top is really beautiful, just nestled in the mountain! Overall a great time and a worthwhile challenge.

Such a awesome view at the top! Over looking all of the Spokane Valley

Nice north face trail. Lottsa beautiful folliage, solid incline, and stunning views. Will do it again next year!

October - Early Fall

Lone Lake offers easy access to some beautiful views of a lower alpine lake.

Much like Stevens Lake, what makes this lake appealing is it’s location. Near the freeway and only requiring only about 5 minutes of mild service road driving makes this a great hike for people that aren’t equipped to hit more treacherous mountain roads.

The trail itself is relatively easy, about 2.5 miles to the lake, and the elevation gain isn’t too steep. Should be able to reach the lake in about an hour and a half.

I wouldn’t recommend backpacking for this lake. We only saw one decent campsite around the entire lake. Definitely stick to Stevens lake for that.

Finding the trail can be a little difficult however. We were actually stopped by a group informing us that we were going the wrong way, and that they hiked 2 or more miles without finding the lake. On further investigation, the trail listed on AllTrails starts on a road, and then exits onto a more abandoned looking ATV trail, before the actual trail is marked and starts. The only marking to indicate it is the trail is a small little sign that reads “Trail” that isn’t completely visible from the road.

Aside from that, would definitely recommend this one.

Slice of heaven.

Gorgeous fall colors right now. Trail is in good condition.

Steeper than I expected. One for people who like the stair machines at the gym. But not too long. Beautiful Autumn colors. Beware of the three "ankle turner" rock fields near the top. First about 150 meters in length, the other two shorter. Forget looking at the scenery when traversing these rock fields. You have to watch where you step. Trail easy to follow, even through the rocks. Yesterday was cold and drizzly, so the summit was in the clouds, therefore, no views.

Pros: Longer hike for those looking for a challenge, gradual incline, breathtaking rock surrounding the lake
Cons: can be tiring, many spots on upper trail and by lake are un protected, not very many potential campsites
I did an overnight trip here in early Oct 2018. I carried a full backpacking load up the (7 miles) trail to the lake. I did pretty well pace wise until the last 1.5 miles or so, when the incline increased a bit and the altitude became more of a factor. That being said, I was blown away by the scenery, especially the rock formations, surrounding this lake. Definitely in my top 3 for North Idaho alpine lake scenery. The first half of the trail is goes through lush forest, and in the fall, is awash in yellows and reds. As a backpacker, I recognized the scarcity of potential good sites by the lake, and while I was alone this time, I would be careful to get to the lake early in peak season. The lake shore is rather unprotected, and there aren't that many options for gathering deadfall for firewood. At 14 miles round trip, this trail is not for the endurance challenged, though it is achievable with proper pacing. Some of the creeks that you cross on the way up may be dry in Summer, so bring water. Overall, I highly recommend this trail for fit hikers.
At one point the road advises "high clearance vehicles only" , however this is only partially true. A cautious driver could get a van or some similar vehicle to the trailhead, in my opinion

Hiked to upper Stevens and stayed the night. The trail to the lake was well traveled and was a lot of fun to hike. The autumn colors were amazing, the mountains were red at the top and yellow and orange plants near the trail. The waterfall this time of year was barely a trickle, but it was still neat to see the large granite formations and crevasses where the waterfall was.

Camping at the lake was fun, but got below freezing and was very windy all night. We even had snow falling in the morning which was actually a treat. There are about four good camping spots at lower Stevens and a couple at upper.

I would recommend the hike for anyone who likes short hikes up hill and great mountain views.

Started from the Steven's Trailhead on the Rose of Sharon trail, which for someone out of shape wasn't the best because it was all an uphill climb & at times, rather steep. (wasnt aware of the rise in elavation). Definitely needs better trail markers.

Stunning views, straightforward hike. Getting to the trailhead was interesting with rocks sticking up everywhere.

This is a fun hike through the trees and a great view of Sandpoint, the lake and even Schweitzer Mtn. You do share the trail with mountain bikers and we went on a Thursday and saw five hikers and three bikers so it is a busy trail.

awesome hike!

Great to see rain forest and old-growth cedar groves, waterfalls, typical Montana forest, and high mountain lakes, all in one trip. My daughter and I left Missoula at 10:30 am, and were back in Missoula 8 hours later. Easy, and great, day trip.

Beautiful hike with epic waterfalls!

The view at the top is amazing! Mountains as far as the eye can see! My kids have done this trail three times with me, it’s uphill but not terribly bad.

Beautiful! Towering cedars at the beginning. We made it to hub lake, not a ton of areas of camping and pretty steep getting down to the lake but well worth it. Made for a pretty awesome weekend.

Great trail, clearly marked. The bees were certainly out in abundance for this day at the beginning of the trail, but not aggressive so no worries. The views were outstanding, especially in and around the the Rocks... well worth the drive for this one.

Beautiful trail. Steep sections but totally do able. Views are amazing.
