HikingGreat!

Not many views until one part in the middle and then at the top is 360 views. I thought it was worth it. I calculated almost 3,000 feet of gain so little more than AT suggests. Definitely a leg burner. Trail is in great condition and perfect for winter.

HikingGreat!

Easy trail for advanced hikers, steady elevation gain through forest to a rocky craggy summit and one of the best views of the rogue valley.

SnowshoeingIcySnow

I did it on 2/6/21. It was snowy right from the parking spot. Definitely get snowshoes and even with that we had soft snow , which was tough to walk as we were sinking almost 2/3 ft every step and it's tough to hike. Also, the trail is not well marked and it's easy to get lost. The first two miles are steep and under treeline but the views opens up after that but the snow gets deeper too and you need to be very careful as you might just sink in 3 ft snow and land your foot on a rock and twist your ankle.....Start early as it will take a lot of time to do. Have fun out there.

Hiking

My first time there in the winter. Beautiful and had the whole place to myself. I hiked around the big lake and walked down to most of the campsites....also walked to the smaller lake. Had 5 miles on my Fitbit.

HikingGreat!IcySnow

Got a late start at noon. Light snow patches midway, boot-top deep nearest summit, but still patchy. Walking sticks good idea as top gets icy. It was cold. Super clear views above the cloud layer. Fantastic trail; some down tress, but all passable. Average effort: 6-7/10 Time: 4ish hours roundtrip

HikingIcy

We hiked this trail November 25 - 2020 Started late in afternoon and weren’t sure how far to go with the conditions.... next time will go farther in warmer weather. Was a little icy and difficult coming back down. After about 1 mile you get to Sheep Creek Landslide that happened in 1983. A nice view from here Trail is NOT well marked. It starts across road from parking lot. Very beautiful and scenic and will do again for sure!!

HikingSnow

The beginning of the trail was a bit rough due to fallen trees and branches. After about 1-2 miles there was snow on the ground, but still relatively easy to walk through. About 1-2 miles from the top the snow was deep, maybe 1-2 feet. It made it difficult to get to the top but we did it. Started hiking at 10, got back to the car around 4...walking in snow is slow going. Incredibly gorgeous views the whole way!

HikingGreat!

Great Hike! There is no fee or restrooms at the trailhead. Just a dirt area for parking. Great maintained trail, and when you get up on the ridge you get some major views! There was only one tree down that we had to hike around, but it was nothing crazy. The steepest part of the hike is the final push, with little switchbacks to the summit. From the top of Stein Butte, you could see many of the Siskiyou Peaks in Northern California and Southern Oregon. Applegate Lake is also in view. The route took about 5 hours to complete, and was a pretty good and rewarding workout. Highly Recommended!

HikingScramble

I started this trail on Sunday at 10:30a and finished at 3:00p. The parking area always sneaks up on me, but the trail is easy to locate upon parking. There is an awesome variety of beautiful scenes on this trail, including an aspen grove on the second half of the hike. My golden, Farmer, did great the whole way, but the slight scramble at the top was a bit of a stretch for her.

BackpackingGreat!

I took my two younger kids (7 and 9) on this trail and camped near the summit. The first 4 miles or so are pretty much all uphill. There are no water sources, so be prepared. We pitched our tent in a grove of trees about half an hour from the top around sunset. Shortly after we began to hear the screeches of bull elk and this went on all throughout the night. We had no idea what it was- sounds like a woman screaming. It was terrifying! The scramble to the top is worth the view. It’s absolutely beautiful, though be careful if you’re afraid of heights! Coming back down was hard on the knees, will take hiking poles next time. The trail head is on the other side of the road from the parking lot- FYI, it took a bit for me to find it ;)

It was hot. No water sources in this trail besides the lake which is pretty dry around this area. Some bugs an tons of butterflies. I saw a bear climbing down a tree . It has nice views, but nothing impressive. You get to see the lake, but the air quality didn’t help.

HikingGreat!MuddyOver grownScramble

Gorgeous trail! Challenging, but beautiful. It exceeded my expectations. There are definitely parts where the trail climbs and could be difficult for some hikers. But those climbs are broken up my flatter sections. I enjoyed the combination of hiking in the forest, through meadows, and then along ridges with views. We spent 3.5 hours climbing to the summit, taking pictures, having lunch, exploring a bit off trail. And then about 1.75 hours to return back to the trailhead. The rock scramble to the top is short and doable. Nothing technical. It's a great hike, with a great reward. Oh! and I noticed plenty of places to pitch a tent, making this trail backpackable Enjoy!
