Spectacular!

This incline will test your cardio! I moved here a week ago from Florida and the elevation was ruthless for me. Made it to the top in 50 minutes and the view was immaculate. I highly recommend spikes for your boots this time of year, it was slippery at certain points on the stairs up and the same in the trail down. 10/10 would hike again.

Snow and ice on the incline, but still very doable. I would've liked my yaktraks on the way down the Barr trail. It took me 1 hr 26 minutes to make it to the top and less than an hour down the Barr trail. I've been in Colorado for about a month - the altitude was the biggest challenge.

Brutal but well worth the pain. It was awesome.

WHAT A WORKOUT!!! Per the placard: 2768 steps, 2K elevation gain and .88 miles.

I am definitely out of shape and completed this in 53 minutes including a plethora of of water and quick bite breaks; after the 1800 mark I did a break every 200 steps until the 2500 mark.

There was some snow and a bit of ice on the left hand side of the stair (while going up) but nothing that made for trouble with just my vans outdoor shoes.

Great hike!

I hiked this on 11/2/18 starting out at 10:30 and made it to the top in about one hour. I am an avid hiker and have hiked several 14ers here in CO. This hike was definitely an ass kicker even for someone that works out almost daily! Take plenty of water and be prepared for snow and ice this time of year. It’s really slippery and muddy heading down!

Excellent trail! It seems most don't make it to the top past the old steam engine. The last 1/2 mile is steeper than the rest but the views are worth it.

very cool, can't wait to make it up pikes peak

Recommend 4x4 to trailhead parking due to washout road.

Most of the trail was still covered in snow due to recent snowfall in October 2018.

AllTrails does not have a way to communicate with other outdoor enthusiast, I can be reached on Facebook Messenger if you have any questions about this trail.

This trail was fantastic but we went the day after it snowed and as the steps narrowed and got higher in between each step, the ice was thicker. It was still amazing but would absolutely think twice about hiking when icy.

It is a great hike. Can't wait to do it again on the next trip out.

Very hard on the way up. Not sure if I’d suggest running down the trail. It’s fairly steep at some points.

I wouldn't rate this trail difficult. It's a steady drop into the canyon with only a few steps here and there. You'll want sturdy shoes once you're walking by the river with a little bit of scrambling the closer you get to the end of the trail. Take your lunch and enjoy the space!

Amazing views. Inclines kick your butt a little bit but the views on the top are worth it.

Great hike! I will be back for the incline and continue to pikes peak and back.

Beautiful trail nice creek to look at. Lots of different vegetation. Lots of cover from the trees so a little chilly in the cooler months.

Amazing view at the top, best trail we have done as far as diverse scenery. Will definitely do this one again but will do the Devils Playground turnoff.

Hiked up and down on Monday 10/22 on a spectacular, clear day. Navigation was mostly self-explanatory, Barr trail camp was a wonderful gem of a stopover, and the range of terrain was spectacular. Upper three were occasionally snow covered, better part of last 2 miles were often icy and left me looking for rocks. If doing again, I’d take micro spikes with me in addition to poles. It’s a really strong, intense our and back is you are up for it. Took me 6:30 on way up, and 4:30 on way down. Hard and glorious day.
I had 3-20oz bottles with me which was plenty of capacity - refueled at Barr camp (2x - you need a filtration system) and summit once. Your last water source before the summit is the creek. H the A-Frame (around 11,800 ft and 2 miles beyond Barr camp, i think). And make sure you age. Every basic essential - this is a high, exposed trail with little support.

Unbelievable rock formations! Easy valley hike until you get to the base of the Crags. But worth every step!

Great hike, great workout. View at the top is worth it. Took our group around an hour to get to the top of the stairs and another hour and twenty minutes to hike back down Barr trail.

Great hike! Did get steep at some parts but the view at the top is amazing. You must go all the way to the top —you won’t regret it!

who knew such a little trail could hold so many views

Drove over an hour to find out this trail is now closed to bicycles.

best starter hike in colorado

The reward at the end of this hike is so worth it. You get a 360 degree view! Breathtaking! The hike is moderate but if your not use to the altitude there are small spots that can be difficult. Rest take your time, enjoy the quiet and beauty along the way.

Really liked this hike. Just the right amount of challenge. Could definitely backpack in and camp at one of the primitive campsites. Loved all the creek crossings and beautiful aspens! This trail was a little more shaded than I had planned for so I was a bit chilly until I got moving. Will be back!

Didn’t make it all the way to Barr camp but still great hike and beautiful views all the way up!

Mentally and physically challenging!! Don’t give up, best reward is to get to the top!
