I recommend doing it counter clockwise. East side of the trail inclines slower and has a lot of shade in the morning, but also a lot of rocks. West side is nice smooth dirt trail but more exposed to the sun. So it makes sense to go up slower in the shady but rocky trial and coming down quicker on the smooth but expose part. Overall a beautiful trail with some shade.

Great hike. Many interesting things to see.

It was well worth the millions of rocks we had to walk through. We recorded about 6.5 miles total maybe because we took the long way. I’d recommend coming back up past the shipwreck to just walk a regular path back which was probably around 3.3 miles.

Great ride with views

We did this trail on daylight. moderate hike to the dawn mine sign. if you go down to the right, you will see what it used to be the mine. The mine is now covered with steel but you can peak with a flashlight. We couldn't find a way to go in the mine. Even if there was, I didn't wonder around to much.
be aware of the bee hive on the tree on top to the left of the sign that says dawn mine. These bees will follow you and sting you.
p.s follow skyhighhiking on your I.g

Great hike and views. Wasn't very crowded either.

Hiked this with a friend at 5am. The basic info you need to be aware of at this point is that this trail is pretty difficult to follow after about 1.5/2 miles. We followed along with the trail on the app, but were unable to follow a trail to the end of the hike. We made it most of the way, but with about 1/4 mile left, right before what seems to be largest of the water crossings, the trail was gone. We attempted to get across near the general area that the trail was supposed to lead through, but no dice. Very overgrown in areas, and the trail is basically washed out in a couple of very sketchy spots. I think this trail needs to be re-blazed by some people who are more familiar with what the trail once was. Bring a lot of water - there is a decent amount of rocky ascent, but most of it is shaded. Still a good workout. There wasn't much trash, as a lot of the previous reviews have mentioned there being. Someone must have done a cleanup fairly recently. Also, we randomly found a geocache off-trail after about 1.5 miles :)

I am not going to include more detail, as I don't recommend this trail in its current state. Definitely not for beginners. Please bring a compass/GPS if you choose to attempt to complete the hike.

Nice mellow hike. second half is shaded. Obviously, not too much water but it's worth seeing the end.

Clocked in about 5.6 miles on this one. Beautiful views on this trail, similar to other trails in the area. Starts out with a good incline for about 1.5 miles then somewhat levels out until you hit the summit (past the bathroom/trash cans). There are a couple of benches at the summit to enjoy the view of the coast and downtown. The trail itself is fairly wide, and very exposed with little to no shade. This is a popular local trail so it's heavily trafficked, and as traildummies.com says: "like the 405 - it is so crowded nobody expects you to talk to them." Parking is on the residential street only, I was able to find plenty of open parking on a Sunday morning, but I heard it gets pretty hard to find parking on the weekends.

Lots of shade. Nice creek. Took about 3.5 hrs.

Great for the family. Nice picnic areas, and the actual trail is fairly easy with nice views. On the way to the trail, you can see the horses.

Make sure you grab the pamphlet on the way in.

Great hike with family. Good incline, total hike felt more than 3.2 miles. Shade on lower part of trail. Beautiful views of the ocean!

Loved the solitude. Extremely rocky but brautiful. Ruined a boot and was saved by a cole haan shoe that I came across and salvaged the lace. Be wary of the tides

Great hike, bring and carry water though.

Great hike. Lots and lots of snakes guys. Be careful

There are so many different ways to go. I definitely need to come back and explore further. :) Cool trail, though I would have rated it as hard instead of moderate. There is a steep uphill and flight of stairs if you find rattlesnake trail, totally off of the main trail. :) Coming back soon with more water. :)

Currently my favorite trail, however it becomes very busy during the week ends. I would suggest to arrive super early or car pool.

So close to Santa Monica and lovely hike.

spectacular views, honestly one of the best moderate trails I've visited.

this hike was pretty much a Fire Road the whole way and not a lot of shade until you get into the tunnels but the up and back was almost 7 miles but very peaceful

this hike was pretty much a fire Road the whole way steady incline but not real steep not a lot of shade until you get into the tunnels and the views are pretty good but this hike was just under 7 miles round trip

Nice easy hike. Way too many people on the weekends. Unfortunately the last time I went there was some kind of company family event. There seemed to be a hundred ppl crowding the waterfall. Kids running and yelling everywhere. Not the peaceful experience i was looking for.

Amazing scenic trail. The upper falls is a challenge to get up and down but well worth the effort.

Nice views. Go early.

love this place

The trail was easy to follow. Plenty of directions for how to get to the falls. If you are a local and interested in taking up hiking as a hobby or are just interested in trying it, this would be a great start! It’s an easy hike. My suggestion is to do this early morning - happy hiking!

This hike's difficulty is largely weather dependent. I tried this hike today thinking there would be fog all day. Instead, the sun was blazing hot with very few spots of shade. Climbing continuosly uphill in dry desert-like 90 degree weather is very very challenging. My friend started showing signs of heat stress ( less than half way through). Another hiker on the road also experienced sypmtoms. Experienced Mountain bikers who passed by seemed unaffected. I loved the challenge and the scenery was breathtaking. However, I would highly recommend tackling this hike during cooler months/ very early in the morning. I will definitely return again to try in winter.

About the trail: signs are marked very clearly throughout. The uphill is not the steepest (streets in SF are a lot steeper) but, it is a constant uphill (after reaching the MASH site) in grueling heat.

Great afternoon ,great view.
