First .7miles to #530 was a hefty incline but the trail down and around frog lake was level and made up for the first bit. Well worth it!
My route varied from this one in that I went all the way up the butte and looped around Lower Twin Lake. There was eerie, fast-moving fog at the top, so most of the potential view was blocked.
Great trail with little traffic until you get to twin lakes. Good views and good trail conditions. Steep climb up to Frog Lake Butte trail.
Amazing trail, we did all the way to the ridge, then returned via Twin lake, had a swim... Very relaxing. Most people are at the lake, not too much traffic at the trail itself.
Beautiful hike. Somewhat steep in the beginning then easy down to the lake.
The beginning of the trail you walk up the gravel road for a bit until you get to the trail. Very easily accessible trail to a beautiful lake!
We parked at the Frog Lake Snow Park putting on our rain gear because the mist was gathering on us. Using the snow covered road that many a snowmobiles traveled, we walked to the lake. On our way back, as the sun broke through, we decided to go up Frog Buttes. Again, we followed the snow covered road but this time, the snowmobile tracks stopped after a mile or so. Even through the snow covered road, we could tell the large potholes and washouts would make traveling it in a vehicle a challenge. The blue sky opened up as we hiked to the summit hoping for a view, but we could not find a clear shot of Mt. Hood. Because we were pressed for time, we did not search long for a lookout. Maybe there is one on the north side that we missed. We certainly would like to return to explore the tops of the other Frog Buttes. We have done this hike/snowshoe before on a weekend, and it was CRAZY busy at the snow park. I highly recommend a midweek if possible.
We followed the road to the butte and came back along the trail. The trail is hard to follow in the winter, luckily the GPS kept us on the trail when we had problems. It was a nice trip, but we didn't have much of a view. There are a lot of trees on the butte.
Very steep uphill climb from Frog Lake campground. Lots of downed trees and the snow made us turn around about .25 miles from Frog Butte. Didn’t expect the snow in late May.. wishing we’d done Twin Lakes instead.
We did this in snow shoes in February. There is no GPS signal on the trail so download a map ahead of time. I've done this hike several times at different times of the year from different starting points.. I'm never disappointed. My favorite is to start a pioneer women's grave and hike down to lower twin lake and up to Palmateer view point (great for a lunch spot in the sun) and back. Signage is great. Parking is slim at the north end so get there early. It's a good workout and rocky in spots. Lots of shade and a few flowers in the late spring to summer.
There is a lot of debris on the trail after the winter, and it was a pretty exposed trail for a hot day, but it was a great and short strenuous hike up to the butte. We didn't do the extra 1/2 mile to the Butte and instead headed to twin lakes, which was a great hike. Made a great loop for about a 7-mile moderate hike.
Good: few people, strenuous ski up and down, recently groomed, some real nice views Not good: shared with snowmobiles (tho we only saw a few as they were leaving), hwy 26 traffic noises
