The trail was really cool. The trail is mostly an incline but sometimes it will fluctuate and you will go down hill for a bit. Awesome trail with an amazing view at the end. I recommend stopping at the jump off viewpoint as well. Great trail!

Nice trail. The view at the top is nice, small area so if it is busy, good luck enjoying it up there. We did it with our 11 and 8 year old in about 4 hours total. I highly recommend you get on the trail before 8... on our way down and at the bottom in parking area was full and overcrowded.

Trail was well maintained... everything was wet but the mud wasn’t too bad, especially with proper footwear. The trail is relatively easy and definitely one of the prettiest there is in the Smokies!!

HikingGreat!

Great trail, but the red and blue dot ones offer better views and scenery. Still a great view from the top and not too strenuous. More of a medium trail, not a hard trail. Good tree cover, but lots of noise from 80.

HikingGreat!

Awesome hike! Ice mentioned in previous reviews has mostly melted and is easily avoidable. I highly recommend the detour to The Jump Off - it’s an additional 0.4 mi in each direction and yields a quite awesome, vertigo inducing view. Also, AllTrails marks the bunion slightly incorrectly. We continued past the real bunion to the spot on the map labeled the bunion with a significantly less impressive rock formation and less panoramic views. However, that spot was secluded and very nice for a hiking break! Lastly, the trail map leads to a pretty non-descript trail junction - nothing really to see and easily skippable. Going the entire length of the suggested trail including the Jump Off, we did 10.26 mi, 2500ft of elevation. It took us 5h30m of active hike time for an overall duration of 7h30m, and we hike at a moderate pace.

We went counter clockwise- the first half is not marked at all if you go this way but you just stay on the main trail. The overlook is beautiful of NJ. Very rocky throughout. Moderate hike as it can get pretty steep in parts.

Disclaimer: I took the detour to The Jump Off and then returned to Newfound Gap, so this review does not encompass the last portion of the trail between the junction with the Boulevard trail and Charlies Bunion. This was a great day hike for me (novice-ish hiker in middling, post-COVID shape). Great workout with the payoff of a breathtaking view at the Jump Off. Good shade throughout keeping the sun at bay. There were some portions with gritty ice the day I went that had mostly melted to mud by the time I was on the descent, but I managed it in sneakers. Newfound Gap itself was pretty crowded when I went but I still didn't have much trouble parking. Once we actually got onto the trail the crowds at the Gap died away. Passed a good number of friendly thru hikers along the way, which was fun! Only thing keeping this from 5 stars is that the views/diversity of flora are kind of sparse; I found myself getting a bit bored on the way back.

Scenic drivingGreat!Rocky

We did the loop clockwise. I would def recommend doing it this way because the first part is very steep and would suck going the opposite way. It is very rocky from the first lookout to the second lookout. We had senior dog with us that did it so you should have no problem doing it yourself unless you’re really out of shape

The trail was great! We went counterclockwise on the loop (right at the first fork) and it was a good decision Bc there’s not much to see on that side. It was nice to see all the outlooks on the way down and it made for an enjoyable experience.

We love this hike. Challenging yet manageable even for my knees. Once you get to Charles Bunion, take the time to continue 1/4 to 1/2 mile past take a left at a trail T then look for a narrow rock path on your left. A little bit of a steep grade, but the view is worth it.

I’ve read lots of reviews that says that Mount Tammany is a nicer trail but I found this trail to be just as beautiful. We went on Easter Sunday and there was some people but not crowded. I find that I deduct points at times when the trail is heavily trafficked, I just find that when there’s too many people the hike becomes less enjoyable.

Great workout for cardio and bit of a stretch at the middle. The last 2 miles are technical with ice and boulders. Per Garmin was about 200 flights. Nice hike

Alot of ice on the trail, but an absolutely beautiful view at Jump off, and Charlies Bunion. I recommend doing at least Jump off for the view!

HikingGreat!

Loved the views, it is beautiful. Lots of roots and rocks to step over and climb on. Great trail and marked very well. Had to stand in line and wait about 15 minutes to get on Charlie’s Bunion and take a pic. We started around 8 in the morning and it was not to busy on the trail but our return trip was HEAVILY trafficked. I would not enjoy hiking as well if I had to deal with this many people all the time. With that being said I’m so glad I went and I would recommend people to do this hike. Just get there as early as you can to get started and be prepared for the crowds.
