HikingGreat!Rocky

This is a great trail! It was not very busy starting out around 9 and we had the falls mostly to ourselves. More people were starting to arrive when we left. GPS took us to the Ogle House, but after 1 loop around we found the trail about .3 miles down on the left of the Roaring Motor Fork Trail that was closed. There were scenic views of the mountains in the beginning, running streams and of course the falls. We saw a wolf turkey, too. My son and I hike frequently in Georgia, but my husband does not and he was tired the last mile, which is mostly uphill. This was a great first hike in the Great Smokey Mountains.

Falls were nice. Don’t like the uphill back, but we made it. Warm today!

HikingGreat!

Great trail with some views and beautiful waterfall at the end. Plenty of wildlife to see. Lots of deer, turkey, and squirrels. Get out early because parking become scarce very quickly.

HikingMuddy

This was our first hike in Gatlinburg. We are in shape but not hikers. We loved it. We have a 9 and 10 year old. If you have bad knees or osteoarthritis don’t do this one. Lots o steps and goes up and down quite a bit. There are a few water crossings. Some require some balance. There are logs to cross. Your shoes won’t get soaked but it’s a muddy trail if the sun is out. We loved this trail. The waterfalls are worth it!

Hiking

Our family (myself, husband, 2 kids ages 14 and 10) did this hike in the late afternoon - we started around 1pm. We had a little bit of trouble finding the direction to start from as we parked off of Roaring Fork Motor Trail and it appeared we were ON the trail so it didn't give us a direction to go in. We went to the left and it was the right direction. It took us 2h 50m to hike this. After the first little climb it was mostly downhill until the end, where we briefly had to climb over some rocks to get to the waterfall. We didn't realize how steep the long decline was until we were hiking back up it. It was pretty steep and we took lots of breaks on the way up. There were 3 stream crossings. All of them had logs/branches over the stream to cross on but we still appreciated our waterproof hiking boots. The waterfall at the end was gorgeous and we only passed 4 groups. Parts of the trail passed through leafy undergrowth and parts were on the top of the ridge with gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains. Well worth it! Our kids really enjoyed it as well. We really enjoyed the lack of people in comparison to the Laurel Falls overcrowded hike we did earlier in the week.

HikingFloodedGreat!

This was my family’s favorite hike that we did all week. Rated moderate, but it was the most technically difficult hike we did (more difficult than Rainbow Falls). It had some steep slopes and some creek crossings. The falls were beautiful and the trail takes you right to the base so you can feel the spray on your face.

great trail. a bit muddy in spots due to recent rains. not marked greatly. we had to cross the creek once and it was higher than probably normal so a bitter harder. getting down to the falls was a little hard just be careful. there is a sign where you turn left to get to falls. one of the signs also points to go a certain way to get to roaring Fork Rd and after we saw falls we thought we would try it. haha, it took us to Roaring Fork Rd and by the cemetary but we had to walk all the way back UP the Rd to Rainbow Falls parking and it was mostly uphill. won't do that again. what was supposed to be a short hike turned into a 6 mile hike. beautiful but we had other plans we needed to change.

This was a beautiful escape into the woods. It wasn’t crowded and posed some creek-crossing challenges due to heavy spring rains the day before, which made it all the more fun. All told we saw maybe a dozen people along the way, which is a fraction of the number one might expect from the hundred of cars parked in the [full] lots and along the road. The falls themselves were beautiful and valley glimpses a sight worth remembering.

It was so unbelievably crowded that we couldn’t even park to get into the trail. Rainbow Trail was hopping along w Ogle. We had to squeeze past parked cars that were parked along the road. So bummed we weren’t able to get back in there. Avoid the area if you dont like crowds.

Definitely a workout - up and down with uneven ground - but such a great pay off with the waterfall! We got a little muddy and you might like to cross a stream or two, so bogs or waterproof shoes are wise. Bring snacks and lots of water!

We did this trail yesterday after the storm and we loved it! Great unexpected and interesting hike that was quite challenging on the way back. Signage was a little confusing but so happy we found it!

The parking lot was incredibly full because if everybody going to rainbow Falls next door but this trail was practically empty (which was awesome)! We did a hike with a 6, 8, and 14 year old and they loved it. The waterfall at the end was beautiful and we were the only ones there on spring break week which was amazing. It was a bit of a long walk back, quite a bit of it uphill, but we made it without too much complaining from the kids. There were a couple of fun water crossings and some steep climbing going down to the waterfall but otherwise it was doable if you’re in pretty good shape. The whole thing probably took about two hours.

Signage kind of comfused us, but we made it. The hike down to the falls wasnt bad, the hike up back to the car we took some breaks. (our group ranged in age from 37-10). We also made the detour to see the cemetery, pretty neat.

This is a great trail if you want some Isolation. I only ran into about 8 people during this hike. For a beginner this was a nice challenge, the way to the falls was fairly easy being mostly down hill, going uphill on the return was a nice challenge. Parking can be difficult with its vicinity to rainbow falls. Much busier at 12 when I left compared to 10:15 when I arrived. I look forward to doing this trail again someday.

Great Hike. We started the hike and we pulled up the GPS on the app. It said that we went the wrong way. We turned around until we ran into an older couple. They confirmed that we were going to the right way all along.

Great start to the new year. You must definitely watch you footing the last 100 yards or so. Also neat in a strange way to cross through all the dead and new trees of reforestation after the 2016 fire.

HikingMuddySnow

Hiked on 2/19/21 - The road to the trail was closed (we started at the top) but we parked and walked the 1 mile up the closed road to the beginning of the trail. When starting at the top of the trail, the whole first half of the hike is downhill making the second half of the hike more difficult. Having fresh snow was awesome, however it was foggy so other views were harder to see. You have to cross the stream two times so you might get your feet a little wet if you can not find rocks or logs to step on. The trail was very muddy in certain spots but the roots of trees made it easier to grip up the hill. In all - the hiking was good, but more difficult with the incline on our way back. The waterfall was awesome! And if you’re willing to scale a fallen tree to get directly in-front of it, it is even cooler.

HikingMuddyOver grown

Trail is muddy with lots of exposed roots. Much of the trail passes through the burned area so expect it to be overgrown in late summer. Best time to hike this is in winter as the loop road is closed and you can make this a lollipop hike, using the road to get back to your car. Wet trail in winter though and sone stretches with stream capture. Many quagmires that can be skirted. Falls is nice during winter flows, but not so much in dry weather. This trail has received heavy use over the last decade and is in need of maintenance.
