Really nice hike. Roads were closed due to snow when we visited so took the long way, but was worth it because of all the Mule deer that crossed the trail in front of us. Not recommended on a cloudy day, because then there is no view from the top.

Loved this hike! Saw people of all ages coming and going...it is a pretty steady climb to the top, but as many other reviewers have mentioned, well worth the beautiful views.

Went around 11. A bit crowded but it was New Year’s Day. Lots of dogs on leashes minus one, who kept on having to call her dog to her as they would approach other dogs. Vultures were out. Fresh sage smelt great. Kid with drone kind of was a bit distracting noise wise. Lots of kids. Great hike for families. Would definitely go again, just at a less busier time. Wonderful views!

Great hike but really crowded.

Beautiful hike with magnificent views! Not to be missed if you are in San Luis Obispo Area!

Fun, short hike up stairs to a beautiful view. Not recommended for those who are afraid of heights!

Absolutely beautiful! No snow or ice, but I did it before tonight’s storm. You can’t beat the views of the mountains or the valley below.

Awesome views! Great for kids! Well maintained. Clearly marked, with lots of informational signs about the local wildlife along the way.

Great sunset views!

Short walk to the top. I like the views leading up the top more than at the top. It was a little cloudy the day we went, but still worth it.

Perfect time of the year to do this hike I think. The weather was perfect. It wasn't too strenuous. The views were amazing. All in all, a great hike! Definitely worth it. Folks should consider this one in fall or winter. I feel summer would be too miserable considering the fact that the sun literally, beat down on us the entire time. I wouldn't want that during summer. It was great to see the amount of bikers and joggers on this one.

Amazing views!

I love the view

Lots of people, but it didn’t ruin the views. I sorta ran the stairs a bit for exercise, but stopped very often. Personally I think the views climbing the stairs up were better than at the top, but that’s only Bc it was after fires, so a very hazy day. Doesn’t take long, worth it. Ok for kids too.

Great trail any time of year, once you get to the top there are great 360 views. If you feel like going a bit further once you are towards the top, there is a trail that takes you to the next peak, Oats Peak.

We did this trail back in July. It was very crowded, but worth the stair climb.

on Moro Rock Trail

Steep climb with steps up to the top of Moro rock. Was busy even though was November but was also a weekend. Great boards up with interesting information along the path. We headed up here for sunset and was beautiful, the views from the top are breathtaking. Plenty of parking and toilets at the trailhead.

This was a beautiful hike to Heather Lake. Trailer is well maintained, and smooth. We took the Hump Trail to Heather Lake as the sign stated the Watchtower was closed due to snow and ice, even though we knew there was none of that this day. This part is beautiful, but steep. Very Picturesque at the Lake. Returned via the Watchtower, and can see why this would be closed in the winter. I am not a fan of heights, but this trail although has steep drop offs, it wide enough to allow even the heights challenged to pass. Recommend the Watchtower trail for the scenic outlooks that are just magnificent!

This trail is definitely on our do do list to continue further to Pear Lake and Beyond.

If you’re considering it, go for it! If you can make it to Heather Lake with plenty of energy, you’ve competed most of the elevation climb so consider continuing to Emerald and Pear Lakes. All 3 are rather different in their view/surroundings.

Best part of this hike is the return trip out is mostly all downhill! Pit toilets are at both Emerald and Pear Lakes.

Note that the Watch Tower Trail has a sign after Oct. 15(?) that says it’s closed due to winter weather. This may not realllllly be accurate if the weather is great. There definitely wasn’t any snow when I took the trail on Nov 2nd — it was in the 60’s. So I waited at the intersection of the Watch Tower Trail and the other trail until a group came down the Watch Tower Trail and confirmed the conditions were perfect and there’s no reason not to take that option. Traffic on the Watch Tower Trail was reasonable — I’d pass someone/a group heading down about every 5 minutes once I hit the Watch Tower part of the trail.

A few spots on the trail are narrow with a notable steep drop off to one side, but it wasn’t enough to concern me (I’m fairly afraid of heights ). Just bringing that up since others mentioned it in other reviews.

Also note: the first few miles (and thus the last few miles) of the trail are dense forest, so be mindful that when it nears sunset the trail will get much darker earlier than you may anticipate. Pack flashlights/etc. accordingly if you may wrap up this trail in the late afternoon/early evening.

fantastic trail easy for the whole family and features fantastic views. Be sure to visit the tide pools along the way.

The day hike was amazing! We went on Veteran’s Day and took the hump trail because the watchtower trail was closed for the season. Although people prefer the watchtower, the hump was tiring, yet still amazing. We got to see a family of deer along the trail and enjoyed the scenery.
If you do a day hike around this time of year, I recommend leaving pear lake by 2:30 to get to your car by sundown.

Cool short hike. The only problem is since it’s so short, it’s very popular so you can’t really hike your speed because of the crowd.

Beautiful and not hard. Mostly full sun exposure, we were happy temperatures were 80. Sunscreen a must. Highly recommend!

Did this as a 2 day 1 night backpacking trip 9/30/18. Pear lake was very crowded, probably because it was the first weekend of the non-quota period. Still a BEAUTIFUL hike. Highly recommended!
