I did this trail in August 2017. What a great hike. Wooded lowlands till you get above the tree line. Sun was brutal at that point. Camped out at panther gap, then hiked over to pear like the next day and camped there. 80degree days and 60 degree nights

Completed this trail on Labor Day, September 4th, 2017. No doubt! It certainly was one of our favorite trails in California. We love difficult trails so when researching we just had to test this one out. SO glad we did and loved it! Go Alta Peak #respectfornature.

A must. Gorgeous lake. Alot of history in the area. Trail is well maintained.

Great hike, you have the best views the whole way up. There are streams along the way, so you can pack a water filter to reduce weight of carrying water.

This is my favorite backpacking stop in Mineral King. Gets a bit tiring about a mile before you get to the lower lake, but an absolutely wonderful place to set up camp. Beware of overly friendly marmots!

Just did on 16th. Weather was great. Definitely need layers and would very much recommend gloves. Was unable to get to peak as last 1/2 mile was iced over. Told by other hikers that even those with ice spikes were having issues. A lot of ice in lower areas especially on way out. Well worth the effort

The last 2.1 miles, from the fork between Alta Meadows and Alta Peak are completely snow-covered. I hiked it the Friday after Thanksgiving, and had to trail blaze using the GPS. It's possible some of it has thawed, but be prepared to hike over snow/ice/slush to reach the summit. Since the sun sets around 4:40pm, I would recommend bringing a headlamp and coming down from the summit around 2pm at the latest if you don't want to hike in the dark. The views from 2.8 miles onward are breathtaking.

The trail conditions are free of snow or ice. It's a strenuous hike and took us 8 hours out and back. Try to summit by noon since the days are shorter now.

Um waaaaay longer than 12.8 miles. Awesome views and very challenging. Like I'll be in pain for 3 days, kind of strenuous. The Hike is a lot longer than what it says. Our Apple Watch recorded the out and back hike to be about 19-20 miles round trip. Just be prepared and go early if you're planning a day hike Especially since the days are shorter now. Also there's only a couple of tiny streams but I suggest to bring plenty of water and a flashlight.

This was a very beautiful trail with lots of views, water, waterfalls and wild flowers everywhere!! It was difficult and took us about 6 hrs to complete. We did not see another human after the trail split off from the monarch trail. I would do this again maybe ad a backpacking trip.

great hike, very steep, so watch your footing

awesome views ...very few hikers in October

Great Hike, beautiful views. The road up, Mineral King, was sketchy. Definitely want to have good tires and brakes.

Awesome hike. Very challenging for a day hike. Views were a little shrouded by some smoke in the area but still awesome.

Hike up a very steep incline from Sawtooth Pass through a meadow with gorgeous views of mountains. Initial one mile is steep, with large stone steps to climb. Then cross Monarch Creek, entering a conifer forest punctuated by occasional meadows with views of Empire Mountain. Continue noticeable ascent, but less steep than before, along the well-maintained and fairly trafficked Monarch Lakes trail. One mile before Monarch Lakes, take the Crystal Lake right fork onto an ascending unmaintained use trail, with a lot of loose stone. The trail passes through diminishing forest, past Chihuahua Mine, over a pass above 10,000 feet. It descends somewhat to cross a difficult area of loose rock, and then re-ascends up the loose rock, on a sometimes difficult to discern trail. The trail is apparent, though, and ascends steadily to Lower Crystal Lake, with a concrete dam. Upper Crystal Lake can be accessed by a northwest- headed spur just before the Lower Crystal Lake dam. Trekking poles recommended for difficult footings in many places. Route followed mid-Septembers. Low temperatures overnight in the 20's.

Now this my friends is a true hike! Beautiful views and a hell of a lot of work. My buddy and I did the upper saw tooth loop. About 45 miles. Tons of wild life and vegetation. We'd be hiking on rocks then be in fern forests. Read your map carefully because there is a lot of elevation drops to 8k then climbing back up to 11k. Tons of work. Plan your days accordingly and it will be such a great trip.

Upper Crystal Lake made a great camp spot--we didn't see a soul once we turned on to the Crystal Lake fork in the trail. Spectacular afternoon hike up to the ridge overlooking Monarch Lakes and Amphitheater Lake. Just you and the marmots.

Easy to locate but along the way the signs were not clear so we ended up off the trail. Definitely a hard hike from what we did experience if you are looking for a challenge!

Dogs are not allowed on any trails within the Mineral King Area.

Amazing hike with a few options to continue on and connect to other trails. Sawtooth peak is also a great peak to be claimed by any peakbagger

Nice hike with great views but way too many people. It's one of the shortest hikes in the mineral king valley so a lot of people do it, all day long

Gorgeous hike, beautiful views up top. We started the hike around 10:30 am Sat Aug 19th. We made it out just as it started lightly raining, although there was a lot of thunder well before that. There was a good amount of people on the trail, not too many - you could still hike for an hour without seeing anyone. It is well labeled, and has a nice combination of tree shade and exposure (which was hot in the sun). Definitely recommend it for someone who wants a nice challenge.

This is a beautiful trail that gives you a taste of everything ranging from wildflower meadows, forest, streams, rocky landscapes and two beautiful lakes!

Love the hike thru out. The views are spectacular. I would even rate this as hard than moderate because of the incline hike almost the whole time. Bring some extra clothes, the water is very welcoming and I regret not jumping into it.

Just hiked this yesterday. Unbelievable hike. So pretty. There were wild flower blooms along the trail for a good portion of it along with snow patches.

It was not an easy hike with the gear I had (>40lbs and also my first solo backpacking trip) but it was so worth the views at the lake. Franklin Lake is gorgeous and the sunset is magnificent there.

hiked from Cold Springs campground... saw several pheasants... the marmots ignored my vehicle... great hike to a beautiful lake with jagged peaks 3/4 around it... lots of trout and still some snow pack... some of the coolest pine trees that seem to love such an extreme environment

This trail was an awesome challenge. A beautiful view the entire hike. Some of the most amazing scenery I've ever seen. It was a fairly strenuous hike but the reward at Eagle Lake was worth it. Water is freezing but I had to jump in! Be ready for a great workout but the most amazing views you can imagine.

This trail takes you through beautiful green meadows, trees along the creeks, and a steady climb through boulders and rocks. You are rewarded with breath-taking views of the lake surrounded by mountains.
