Could not find “the trail” for the life of us! Ended up wondering around and making our own trail. Portions were difficult, would be hard for beginners. Would not recommend if you are looking for easy.

Beautiful trail that can be extended into much longer hikes by the vast network of connecting trails. These trails are primarily used by mountain bikers. The pros are it’s amazing scenery and relatively few people compared to other nearby trails on the Preserve. The only con is that it’s not much of a workout due to no elevation gain. Great choice on weekend if you want to get out on a hike while also have some solitude in nature!

Nice Hike! Confusing markers though....saw 4 coyotes on the trail....

on Go John Trail

Hiked with our dogs this morning. A good workout for all. Loved the views.

Great hike to get your heart pumping and see some lovely views in a short time frame. My kids love it but it might be a little challenging for younger kids or adults with balance problems. It's also too tight and busy for me to want to take a dog.

Amazing views from the peak. Had hike at just over 4 miles. Very rocky but not difficult. Go early as it becomes very busy with runners and dogs late morning. I started at 6:30 and hit lots of traffic on my decent.

Great trail, good mix of up and downhill. Trail is well marked and maintained.

Great trail. Easy side of moderate, lots of ups and downs. We went in the early morning, and there's a good deal of shade to rest and take it all in. We went clockwise. Although there is a $7 fee to get into the park, if you go to the visitor center, you can get a 3-pass or a 5-pass that takes the cost down to $5 per visit. We will be doing this trail again. This is our favorite trail so far in the area, but I would rate it to be a very easy side of "moderate" compared to some other moderate hikes we have done across the country.

I started at the switchback trailhead. Took me 2hrs 15 mins for the full loop. Beautiful country. Moderate difficulty. Would definitely recommend!

I am a novice at hiking. This was my third trail. Started a couple weeks ago. This is my favorite so far. Didn’t seem as long as everyone says. I like to go slow to take in the views. So many good views on the trail. It’s a decent incline to the peak. The last 1/4 mile to the peak was tough and parts you wondered where the trail was. But once at the top the views are amazing in all directions. Going down was a little difficult with so much loose gravel over rocks. Very small parking lot.

Loved it! visiting from Charlotte, NC. Never hiked much. This was a fun time for me!

Nice trail for walking, not a lot of loose rocks. Enough climbs to get the heart going.

Started at around 8 am Saturday morning and got there just as some of the early birds were finishing so got a great parking spot!
beautiful hike and I would say definitely moderate ( some parts pretty easy and more challenging near the top)
my Fitbit clocked it at 3.75 km up so 7.5 km total. would do again but hopefully get there for sunrise next time

Really good hike and I would say it is moderate. You get the up hill part done first, so that's nice. There are really great views for being in Phoenix. I would definitely go again.

Good for kids

one of my favorites. it is a Maricopa county maintained trail, and there is a small fee to enter.
like any desert trail, be wear of snakes, bring water, and know your limitations.
the views are fantastic, and you might get to see some wild life.
be safe, and enjoy.

very hot I would recommend going early in the day

Beautiful, moderate, pet friendly trail. I recommend going at sunrise to get a stunning view of the valley and surrounding mountains.

Perfect trail for beginners with a scenic view

I think this is not an easy trail but moderate. maybe its easy if you are an avid hiker. the trail was very rocky and mostly steep; I did the loop clockwise. my device measured 5.3miles and took me 2 hours to complete the loop. 5 min before I arrived I asked myself why I drove 40mins for a trail thats has no shade, but then I started to see so many air balloons on the sky. They were lots bigger seeing by eyes. they were there early in the morning till around 7am. I also saw a big rattle snake was rattling and camouflage on the ground but he was climbing up on the mountain not on the trail. Overall this trail does not worth the drive but worth for one time experience.

This was longer than the review; it came in around 4.7 miles from my calculations. I enjoyed this hike and it was a great workout! Definitely a challenging hike for me, especially the last 1/4 had steep, rocky switchbacks. The views were definitely worth the climb and I loved seeing the fountain. Very clean and well kept trail. Loose gravel and pretty rocky at parts, so just take it slow when needed so you don’t fall! Would definitely do it again!

My brother and I lived on this mountain when we were 12 and 13. We would run the hills for training and also hike the mountain Sunday morning to go to PFA. They have water fountains there. Also they have a very nice prayer room.

Sunrise is a great hike with light traffic. I access it using the Ringtail Trail that is further East of Lost Dog Wash Trail. The downside to this trail is that it’s really rocky which can be difficult to navigate for those not used to the desert terrain. Otherwise a great view at the top and have always met great fellow hikers on this trail. Definitely worth hiking, running and some even bike it, but it gets pretty tough the closer you get to the top.

easy going trails for beginners.
love that its soo local but the parking lot gets full at peak hours.

Decided to hike this trail for the first time on Labor Day. Unfortunately, got a late start and it was HOT. There is no shade to speak off - only the partial shade of a few Palo Verde trees along the way. I would recommend this trail if you want something close to the Phoenix metro area where you would get a decent workout. However, the views are nothing special and not much variety in plant life...mostly cholla, saguaro, and Palo Verde trees, with an occasional cactus barrel and ocatillo.

Challenging enough for a good workout this morning, but I’d still consider this a moderate hike. The scenery and views were great. I’d agree with those that said it was closer to 4.6 miles (which took us a little over two hours). I’d suggest plenty of water, wearing a hat, and going in the morning or in the early evening. The sun was no joke (although the breeze was nice and kept things okay until the last 15 min of our hike). The lot was full when we got there and the overflow lot’s gate was broken. We illegally parked in a neighborhood and felt guilty, but weren’t sure what to do. Oh, I’d also suggest having good walking shoes, or even trail shoes as it is a little precarious at points. Last 1/4 mile to the peak is the most challenging and not for those without sure footing. Worth it though, would recommend.

Nice parking lot and bathrooms! Also have dog bags ready if you forgot. We brought our golden retriever on a fairly hot day. Didn’t hike too much due to the heat but it was a very easy trail to follow!

Great moderate trail to a beautiful view.

Nice moderate uphill hike, quite craggy. The final ¼ mile up to the peak is just as the signs indicate, narrow and steep, but not overly so. I'm a flip flop hiker and had no issues ascending or descending. Great shade spot on the peak for a quick break if extending this trail to Lost Dog Wash (nice easygoing extension). Also, keep an eye out for the larger lizards just a little before the first landing. Overall a nice hike.

Easy hike? I’m not sure
