Went in the morning and there was no one else on the trail. The paved portion up to the oil well was through a beautiful wooded canyon, the trail gets steeper after that but the views are incredible. Will definitely do it again! Ps don’t forget $5 for parking, cash only!

Great views. Seen Cub Scout pack getting their hike on! Easy trail. National Hiking Day

Decent climb and good trail to bring your dog. Beautiful view of all Santa Barbara at the top. Stay left at the fork. Parking can be variable, but there are several spots along the road if your willing to walk to road to the trail head.

Not sure why this is rated Moderate as it's more on the easy side with no areas that a standard 8-9" clearance will scrape on. Have done this several times in a stock Subaru Outback.

Highly recommend for any Crosstrek/Outback/Forester owners or anyone with an AWD vehicle who want to test their AWD and see some beautiful views.

There is a turn off around the middle of the trail where it's much more steep an turns into a black diamond trail.

Kickass hike, tar pits, just an all around amazing trail with great scenery and awesome for picture taking

Beautiful area but it was so hard to follow this trail. So many washes and false trails that led me and my partner astray. Ended up adding two miles to make it a 5-mile total hike. Ended up on the PCT at some point? I made it out in one piece so I’m not complaining.

this was my first time trying to go off roading with my 2013 rav4 awd. for the most part it was easy I didn't scrape the bottom or spin out but their is a few spots that you need to get out and check before you cross.. it was fun

3 miles as the crow flies. going up and down hills, it feels a lot longer. great views

good hike not to bad..

The rocks were great to climb on. The trail was a little hard to follow in certain spots but it was still a good hike. Not that strenuous.

This was an awesome trail! It’s super easy to hike, but it’s the rocks that are the star of the show! Get ready for some gorgeous geology and great views! I would recommend going off the trail where permitted (there are signs in certain places saying you shouldn’t) and clambering up the boulders

Good trail with some nice canyon splitting. There are numerous tar pits at the beginning of the trail. There is quite a bit of wildlife as well. Very moderate hike with only a small section with some grade to it

Awesome trail, we went with a gsd and a 2 year old and had the best time. Not very difficult and not very long trail

Alright but you can find better rock formations in Alabama Hills and Joshua Tree.

Had a great time. We found a steeper side trail that was more challenging. Watch for snakes...we came up on two rattlers fighting.

Just did this one for the first time this morning, and I have to say it is by far one of the most intriguing hikes I've done. My friend and I started from the east end and worked up and down to the west end, where we found a BUNCH of tar pits!! I could even smell a hot spring somewhere, but I could not find it. After the tar pits is a very small interesting canyon with beautiful rock formations. I was very fascinated by them because some of them have a white substance all over them - I wonder if it's calcium or salt - and the striations are vertical as opposed to horizontal. There are also lots and lots of holes in the rocks which makes me believe at one point these rocks were submerged in water. All in all, it is not only a very beautiful hike, but a very educational one. I recommend it to everyone, even beginner hikers because even though it is a very challenging hike, the sights are well worth it!

Gorgeous

Beautiful hiking trails, good for family and pets.

Good hike. The end of the trail was pretty steep and had a rope to help you get down. Not much of a view at the end, and there was no waterfall when I went in August.

Nice trail! Went uphill but not too steep. Was a good workout and no one was on the trail. We arrived at 7 and were done by 9:15! Nice views of Santa Clarita valley. I suggest bringing bug spray!

Easy to get to it from the highway. Many people taking photos in nice dresses, etc. massive picnic table areas for large events. Some rocks are very close to the parking so you don't have to necessarily hike to get awesome selfies.

This was a nice drive in the Jeep on gravel roads. This trail is not challenging at all. It is basically ungraded fire roads with some wash outs from rain. Any stock vehicle with ground clearance is fine. The first half mile is the most challenging. Views are nice as you climb the mountain! It took us about 2 hours up the hill and 1.5 back down. But we were driving slow enjoying the sights, didn’t see 1 other person on the trail.

Took this trail as the maiden voyage for my 2008 2WD FJ Cruiser with A/T tires. The trail was fun - good amount of scenery, inclines, declines, bumps, and views. People recommend 4WD but I had no problem in my 2WD suv. Never even had to switch the transmission to a fixed lower gear or let air out of the tires. There isn’t much for cover and in the summer it was pretty hot and dusty. There are plenty of side trails fit for ATVs or motorbikes. Only saw one other SUV and two motorbikes the whole time. At the end of the trail as marked by AllTrails, you can go left towards the reservoir but there is a locked gate (apple maps shows it as an accessible road). The right turn direction back to the main road is tougher than other parts of the trail, but my FJ crushed it so I’d imagine any truck with decent ground clearance or a true 4x4 shouldn’t have a problem. Enjoy!

Fun trail, nice Mountain Views, however the moderate tag is definitely a bit overkill. The main trail is very easy, especially in a car designed for off road use (FJ Cruiser in my case) however there are some great alternative options that offer more of a challenge along the way. Definitely a great beginner route.

Beautiful in all aspects, views and flowers abound, the only “dent” is the shooting noises from the near by range, my first time there today, Sunday, took me by surprise... you hear the shots most of the hike as the sound bounces off the mountains... it steals the purpose of a nature hike...

Took my X5 XDrive40e out on its maiden off-roading voyage. Great road, I survived with all sensors and gadgets intact.

One tip: where the train “ends” in the app is actually a split with two roads you can take. I do NOT recommend the rightmost path unless you have a lift. The leftmost will take you to the resivoir, which is a locked dead end. The road narrows quite a bit and the rocks get bigger and sharper.

Excellent trail overall, many oh sh** challenges, but I survived. Turn back at the end of the trail in the app, or you will likely regret it

Beautiful area filled with easy hikes for the family. You could spend most of the day here. They have a nice visitor center with clean restrooms inside. There are plenty of picnic tables and port-pottys throughout the park as well. Stop in the visitor center and grab a couple of trail pamphlets that explain the history of the park.
