Have tried and completed others that are close by, since it was marked as hard, tried and does. It feel too hard. Only thing I can recommend to go either morning or little late in the evening. It was little hot, but overall enjoyed the trail.

Challenging but fun. Extremely limited parking. There are 8 normal spots + 2 handicapped spots. We took the last parking at 7am on a Sunday.

Hiking

Beautiful weather for a hike and the trail was in great shape. We got to the Rhus parking area at 8:30 and it was full (only about 8 spaces) but lucked out as an early runner was just finishing up and offered up his spot. Not very crowded at all on the trail. Great views both on the way up and down. I would definitely do this hike again, but would get there closer to 8:00 on a weekends. Parking may be easier weekdays?

Windy up in the summit today, had some flare of snow.. Its a nice training hike for the sierras specially if your going in the summer. Elevation gain is quite a challenge.

HikingGreat!

Great workout ! parking is limited so come early or be ready to add another mile to the hiking distance. Trail is not too crowded although it is narrow and you get great views of Silicon Valley about half way up. The view at the top is mostly of the surrounding preserve. Not the best or most challenging hike in the Bay Area but worth doing once.

HikingGreat!

Decent hike in woods all the way and beautiful views. First one mile is very good warm up and rest is like curved and narrow path, last two miles has a very good elevation. If you are lucky will get a parking space at entrance otherwise you have to park at college or on altamont/moody road which is 0.6-0.8 miles from trail starting point. Thermals recommended , Plan to complete hike by 6pm it really get pitch dark in woods and active mountain lions area, Carry minimum one liter water. Overall its moderate hike

Running

Wowowow what a workout. This 12.5 mile out and back portion of the New Almaden Trail was rough! The first half of the hike 6 isn’t too bad but I used all of my running energy and was burnt out for the return trip (lots of mixed uphill) Cell phone reception and my playlist really helped me out on this one. The trails are pretty narrow and there were about 10+ people I had to pass so if you’re freaked out on the Rona keep a mask close. Poison oak is also prevalent on both sides of the trail so be careful and sleeve up if poison oak is a problem for you. TLDR DON’T underestimate this 12 miler Narrow trail Poison oak prevalent Cell phone service was on point Bathroom at park entrances.

Hiking

Black Mountain Trail from Rhus imo is a very enjoyable hike. I’m not from The Bay, but do frequent the area every weekend. I’m usually accustomed to higher Peaks that SoCal offers, but this is one trail I would not mind doing over and over again. The gain and mileage is perfect for those looking for a solid workout. Parking lot is small and will probably accommodate no more than 10 vehicles. I think this is one of the better hikes in this area. I clocked in at 2 hours and 38 minutes roundtrip, 9.6 miles roundtrip

Backpacking

Overnight hike from my home to the backpackers camp on Black Mountain. Route went through Arastradero Preserve, Foothills Park, Los Trancos Preserve, and Monte Bello Preserve. The return was down the Black Mountain Trail to the Rhus Ridge Trail. About 1/3rd of the hike was on city streets and trails to get to the preserves.

A lovely but monotonous trail. The first mile and last mile up are pretty steep but the rest is moderate. Parking is impossible. Note that Hidden Villa is currently closed to the public/reservation only, so you can’t start your hike there. If you view my recording, you can see where some additional street parking is available ~half a mile from the trailhead.

Great hike and workout. Almost straight up. Do this in the winter though as its half exposed to the sun and can be hot. Winter, cloudy day is the perfect time to do this. Parking at the Rhus Ridge trailhead is a pain as it limited to 9 cars. Alternate is to start from Hidden VIlla Hostel and take the trail via elephant mountain for 1.5 mile to meet up with the regular black mountain trail
