Great scenic trail. All I could ask for in a day hike around this area. A bit crowded on the weekend but ok.

Parking lot & turnouts full. Paid $20 for valet parking near store. Started hike off Sturtevant trail at 8:15 a.m. Took us 4 hours to reach summit (Observatory) and 3 hours to return/ loop around through Wilson trail (Upper Winter Creek). Return trailhead is off the cafe parking lot, however it is not marked.Tracker recorded 15.5 miles.Don't be deceived, it's a strenuous hike. Beautiful mountainous views.

arrival time 7 am Sunday morning. parking lot was already full. had to park up the street on my Baldy St. When you start this hike, immediately the scenery is beautiful. Along a beautiful water stream flowing pretty good, and some old cabin ruins along the path. You by the 2nd mile, it's starts getting a bit more difficult because everything after that is shifting up hill all the way to the summit where it splits into many different trails. We took the Cucamonga peak trail for another 2.5 miles more. A few more switch backs but not as bad. once you get to the top! it's breath taking and beautiful.
tips- go early , bring your hiking issentials, lots of water, food, fruit or candy. Don't rush, you will burn out, go at your paste even if people pass you. it's ok to take as many stops as you want but keep a solid paste.
see you at the next adventure.

Always a great hike. Got there at 6:30am and got the last parking space. Go during the week if you have that option. It was a great day on top, no wind and sunny. Lots and lots of dogs today but they were all well behaved.

Really beautiful trail. The leaves are all orange and yellow at this time of year. Definitely one of my favorites.

One of the most beautiful hikes I have been on. It gets challenging at times but it is well worth it.

Did this hike with some friends and my two dogs. A very challenging hike, pushed my limits. The weather was cold and windy at the summit. I'll do this hike again.

We hiked this trail on Saturday 11/10 and tracked about 12.3 miles RT. The trail is well marked relatively busy. For me, the altitude and gradient were very doable, but I got pretty tired at about 10 miles. The other hikers were very friendly and were willing to step aside on narrow parts of the trail. The view was a little smoky due to wildfires but the visibility was still decent. The weather is perfect this time of year!! Cool in the morning and at the top, so bring a light jacket. We got a late start at about 9am and had to walk about 8 minutes from our car to the trailhead. It took us 4 hours to summit and a little under 3 to get down. Overall tiring and fun hike! (And of course, stopped at the Buckhorn for nachos and beer on the way back ;-) )

Hiked this on Sunday 11/11/18. It was beautiful and not as hard as I expected. What made this beautiful hike difficult was the freezing cold winds.

Terrific challenge really pushed myself starting at 6:25, made the summit 7:55am
Breathtakingly views!

Do It People One Of The Best Hiking Trails

Fun, but hard! Don’t under estimate. From the peak you can see from the Mojave to the pacific. We could also see Catalina island, and even past Catalina island - to San Clemente island. STUNNING!

THE PEAK WITH THE BEST VIEW.

I love this trail. It is never crowded. The views are most optimal. The switchbacks up Telegraph are gorgeous and the Peak is lovely with a small area between the rocks to grab a bite and look at Mt. Baldy. You can see the green ski hut and just wonder at the Bowl.

Phenomenal hike. Great views and very fresh air. Loved it.

About 90% of this hike is shaded which is very nice for comfort but limits the view points. I guess it was nice to change it up from the dessertous terrain of SoCal. It was also nice because I got a late start but didn’t get caught in the worst of the sun. Btw parking is rough if you get there late, I parked 0.8 miles from the trailhead.

Started out this hike with what felt like a million other people, I was not excited and kept weaving around them. Around mile 4 where it splits off to summit Wilson, just past sturtevant camp, everyone disappeared. Yay. But I was immediate joined by eight million mosquitos. Luckily I had some bug spray, if I do this hike again, I’ll bring a head net. As others have said, the summit left much to be desired. No log book, signage, etc plus people can drive there so it doesn’t give you the same sense of accomplishment.

Worth mentioning, when you get to the burned area just before the peak, there is load of poison oak? I’m terrible at IDing plants but someone told me it was poisonous and what it looked like, it was scary especially with my dog but I think we made it out unscathed.

Made it up in 4 hours and down in 2.5. Overall not a bad day but def not my fav hike in SoCal.

This is an awesome hike that I have done and loved so much. However today it is closed due to a fire!!!

2nd time up this trail. Started at 5:30am and finished within 6hr:17min... the hike is easier than Iron mtn but intense nonetheless. A good workout with amazing views of the sunrise over the 3Ts. Great training for C2C. Took 7l of water but only drank 4.5l. Highly recommended- but not for the leisurely stroll

Amazing. Met only one person on the way up until of course we hit the backbone trail. Had to bag Harwood as well. Descended back down the same way.
Had to stop half way up register ridge to soak in the view. Probably my new favorite route up Baldy.

I did this hike September 29th and I have to say, it is one of the best hikes! The elevation gain is is incredible! Especially when you consider the Backbone portion of it has very little elevation gain! I took the Harwood summit option when I went up. I'm planning a trip up C2C and this trail is perfect for me to train for C2C. I really like this one and will be doing it again.

10/21/18 great hike, the weather was perfect! The incline is steady once you pass the ice house saddle. As much as I love this trail, i hate it at the same time due to a very rocky trail. I recommend wearing hiking boots to avoid twisting your ankle. It is roughly 14 miles WITHOUT hiking Bighorn. Always bring plenty of water!

Excellent hiking day

Nice trip overall

This was the most difficult hike I’ve ever done. And somehow we did 14 miles although AllTrails says 12. Beautiful, yes. Fun, yes. . . but Big Iron will not be seeing me for a LOOOONNNG time!

We did this hike in mid-August along with our friend who was prepping for her trek on the JMT. The hike is well maintained, mostly shaded, and meanders up the mountain with a series of switchbacks. I prefer switchbacks to a straight stair-climb up a slope, so I appreciated the winding nature.
Only annoying part is the peak- little shade and LOTS of fitness group meetups that had music blasting and were having push-up competitions on the summit monument. Oh, and the drone guy. Not everyone wants to hear your whirring drone and be in your videos. Enjoy nature, please, and let the others around you enjoy it too!

Overall: nice and slow pace with lots of shade! No water and only pit toilets so bring plenty to drink.

Superb peak views.

Excellent hike! Started before the sun came up, easy to find the path. Parking was no problem at 6am on a Sunday but definitely was packed by the time I finished around 12pm. The hike was a good workout, the last 1.5 miles was a butt kicker! Great views of Baldy, which was snow covered! Cold at the top but tolerable. I think this is a moderate hike, I wouldn’t list it as “strenuous”, like Baldy!

Brutal and gorgeous. Read the other reviews, you don't want to do this if you havent done San Gorgonio, San Jacinto etc. I met one other person on the trail who returned because of high winds on the Big Horn Ridge. By the time I made it that far the wind had calmed down somewhat and I plowed on. I made a detour to West Baldy - quite nice and completely deserted. I took it really slowly and had several breaks for snacks and some sketching, Took me ten hours in total.
