Snowy but passable for this visiting Wisconsinite. Nice summit views. Warm temps. I only needed a light jacket and headband. I started the route by passing through the ski area and finishing with Baldy Bowl. I only saw three other hikers before summiting. on the way down, I passed many hikers going the other way, easily numbering 50 or more. By the time I finished at 1pm, the parking lot was a mass of humanity, completely full with cars of hikers and skiers.

First winter hike on this trail. Snowed all day long. I like snow covered Mt. Baldy than dry/hot summer hike. Weather is mild even in January here but still need to drive carefully to the trail head when it snows.

Camped near Bighorn right before the snowstorm hit. What I woke up to was easily the most beautiful scene one can imagine.

Beautiful trail. First snow hike. Trekking poles are a must, if I didnt have them I would have probably slipped down the mountain. I got here earlier today at 8am and I was one of the first ones here, it was pretty empty. Keep in mind it's a weekday. It is pretty tough if you haven't hiked in a while, I contemplated giving up multiple times. The trail to the peak at some point was hidden in snow and I felt that it was best if I didnt continue, plus my crampons broke. I'll be sure to finish this trail in the summer.

The front gate is closed, so just walk around it.

I completed this hike on 1/7/18. The extra walk made this an over 21 mile hike. We got to the summit at sunset and descended in the dark with headlamps. From the parking to the trailhead is about 3.5 miles of steep incline on asphalt, don’t let that ruin your day #OptOutside.

This trail is very well maintained. We saw deer, salamanders, and a mountain lion.

The second half of the loop had a few fallen down trees so just expect to hop over them. The wildlife is extra wild from the closure, so be prepared to see some animals and to know what to do when you come face to face.

Be aware of the change of temperature from the trailhead to the summit. There is snow on the summit.

We saw no other people up there so be careful and bring a buddy Incase of emergency. Have a plan.

The vertical climb gets pretty intense towards the end after Sturtavent Camp, especially with how bad that first 3.5 miles blows your legs out, but we did it, so you can do it. You got this!

My buddy’s Garmin GPS clocked us at 21.35 total miles and 5,482 feet in elevation gain for the day.

This was my first hike at this location and hiking in the snow. Great workout...crampons and trekking poles helped. Completed in 9 hours. Since it was supposed to rain later that day it was super windy and began snowing on the way back down. Hiking in the snow was awesome and the scenery was beautiful. Can’t wait to do this one again in better weather conditions to be able to absorb more of the scenery.

absolutely amazing. micro spikes were a must. hiking poles are extremely helpful, i don't summit without them!

started at 8:30. got to the top by 1. ate lunch for about an hour. got back down by 5. next time I will start an hour early because the sun had set by the time we got back to the parking lot.

this hike can be dangerous for those who don't come prepared. we ran into someone who slid 100 feet because they were in Nikes and no micro spikes. luckily they weren't alone. not sure what the current conditions are, i would call the ranger station a day in advance to make sure.

anyways, had a total blast doing this. i definitely recommend getting some miles in before doing this one because it is mighty strenuous. can't wait to train properly and do it again!

Hiked to the peak without micro-spikes, worst mistake ive ever made. Almost fell off a slope but thanks to someone near by helped me up, very dangerous without spikes at the moment.

This is an excellent trail if you want variety and beauty. We took Mystic and went right. We took the more gentle trail instead of taking Punk Out. We went all the way to GMR and went back down via Monroe. In all we hiked 14.5 awesome miles and enjoyed the whole trip!

Started the hiking going up the Baldy bowl trail. Good amounts of snow once you get to the ski hut. Micro spikes and trekking poles helped a lot and were necessary for me in most of the snow and icy sections but there were some hikers who didn’t have spikes and or poles. I think if you had crampons they’re fine but might have been over kill. Reached the summit and then decided to do devils backbone on the way down. Not for the front hearted but definitely worth it. It says 9 miles or something but my strava got me at 12 miles. This is my second hike and I loved it. Can’t wait to do it again.

My 10 year old son wanted to start backpacking so I took him on an 8 mile hike from Barrett Stoddard road to West Fork. West Fork in good enough shape to be hiked was fun he liked it and was a really good workout with out packs on our backs.

Due to the partial government shutdown, the gate leading up to the parking lot is currently closed. You can still park at the bottom and walk up an extra 3-4 miles though. Wish I could have known this before driving an hour and a half!!!

12/28/18 — Whoa. The winds were wicked. Micro spikes needed from around 3.5 miles in until the peak. Snow was over the ankles in places near the top. Had the peak to myself.

Hiked this trail on 12/27/18.

The first 3.6 miles from the trailhead to Ice House Saddle were mostly dry with scattered patches of snow and ice along the way. The next 2.5 miles from Ice House Saddle to Cucamonga Peak were almost completely covered with snow and ice...you will definitely want micro-spikes and trekking poles from this point to make your way to the top if hiking in snowy conditions. We did the hike in 9 hours (7am-4pm) taking our time and making several stops along the way, but we probably could have done it in 7 hours or less if we were hustling a bit more.

Overall, it’s a beautiful trail that can be considered moderate to challenging depending upon your experience and fit. There’s a tranquil creek that runs parallel to the trail for the first couple miles and once you climb higher you’ll be awarded with stunning views of the valley. It’s a well maintained trail from bottom to top. Do it, you won’t be disappointed!

We did this on 12/27, so some info for those looking for details on conditions, etc.

We went to the Ski Hut and then went straight up a chute as opposed to staying on the trail. There’s barely enough snow to do this, so be advised. Crampons, poles, and axe are recommended. I don’t think you’d need an axe if not climbing this part and instead stuck to the trail.

We then hit the summit and took Devil’s Backbone down. Again, crampons and poles recommended.

There’s decent snow/ice above 8500’ in most places.

The rest of it is pretty easy. I’d recommend hitting the ski area on the way down, grabbing a beer, and having a drink on the lift down to skip about a mile of pretty unrewarding terrain down (we did!).

Amazing hike, we did it through devil’s backbone out and back. Definitely recommend crampons over microspikes! The snow coverage makes it much more spectacular and scenic. Only used up about 2L of water since the conditions were cool. Poles are needed towards the last stretch to the summit, but didn’t require a snow axe. Took us 8 hours total with a few breaks here and there. Take warm accessories if you’re doing this in the winter such as gloves/ski mask; as it gets pretty windy at the top!

Hiked to top. Lots of ice so wear spikes and bring poles!

This could be a challenging hike depending on which route you choose when you reach the Punked Out Trail sign roughly 1.5 miles into the hike starting at the Big Dalton Rd. Trailhead. At that junction, the trail on the left is a series of switchbacks with pretty gentle slope to the saddle. . The trail on the right goes straight to the top of the saddle—half the distance, but oh man it is tough! Part of it is not hiking but climbing, really! Take this with caution and if you are confident in your stamina and know a bit of climbing techniques. Of course, let’s not forget the first mile of the trail either. Steep, it is (but at least it is a hike and not a climb!!)

All together, quite a scenic hike, a good workout, and not too crowded. Hope you enjoy it.

Good hike. Was iced over before the saddle, so I decided to turn back & stay the night at Cedar Glen camp since it was later in the day. Had a great view from the top spot at the camp.

Today I accessed the trailhead from Big Dalton Canyon Rd. and followed it up just past the Punk Out junction... my first attempt at this hard trail.

Great hike! Hard, but that’s why we do it. I’ve used this hike twice to train for Mt. Whitney.

I just hiked this on 9th December 2018. Lots of spaces in the lot, I arrived at 6:15 am. Beautiful hike! Definitely harder in knee deep snow past the saddle. Micro spikes and trekking poles were very helpful as some parts were ice. Beautiful view! It took about 4.5 hours up! Check out my insta pics of it! ig: @yvonne_rebecca

Great hike. Lots of snow. Make sure you at least have micro spikes as the snow turns into ice. We did not come down the DBB as few hikers warned us about it. We came down thru the ice house the same way we went up.

I did this hike just after it rained in the first week of December. When I got up to 6000’ or so there was about 6” of snow and roughly a foot at the summit!!

Couldn’t have picked a better time to hammer out this hike! Highly recommended!!

I was able to get to the summit in 3hrs and 45mins.

Round trip was 7.5hrs total including some breaks and 20mins at the summit.

GOOD view! Warning: There is snow very, very early into the trail; trekking poles or a good set of spikes for traction. I did not prepare for the snow and went in tights and a t-shirt. There wasn't a lot of people; I arrived at 7:00 am and the parking lot was still half empty. Took almost 5 hours to complete the entire thing.

Highly recommend for beginners who have a few easy mountains under their belt.

Parked and departed 1 Dec 2018 Saturday 8am at Chantry Flats. Have annual Adventure Pass for $29 from REI that provides access to all southern Ca National Parks.

Went counter clockwise. Trails well maintained. Creek and Sturtevant Falls flowing due to rain 2 days ago and trails not muddy. 90% shaded from beautiful canopy of Bay Laurels, Oaks, pine trees. Hot bowl of chili and coffee at Cosmic Cafe (now closed for season) at Mt Wilson half way point . Entire hike on beautiful trails . Beer garden at bottom end of hike at “Adams Packing Station” great way to celebrate accomplishment.
