This 67-mile (108km) long-distance trail celebrates the glorious landscape of this district as well as the many traditional small villages and the five historic market towns, all offering a great Yorkshire welcome. Ryedale is well-known for its diverse landscapes and stunning contrasts, and that is brought to life on this exhilarating journey. You will enjoy the peaceful fields and woodlands of the Howardian Hills, the patchwork of farmland in the Vale of Pickering and the dramatic southern edge of the North York Moors, crossing the rivers and steep-sided woodland dales formed by glacial meltwater from the Ice Age. There are glorious views throughout plus the opportunity to spot many local attractions. If you’ve ever fancied a peek at Helmsley Castle, Malton’s Market Square, Scampston Walled Garden, Thornton-le-Dale’s famous Beck, Pickering’s heritage rail station, Cawthorn Roman Camps, Cropton Brewery, Kirkbymoorside’s sail-less windmill or St Gregory’s Minster, then this is the perfect opportunity to do just that. The Ryedale Market Towns Trail is an excellent basis for a short break or longer holiday in the area and is the perfect way to discover the district. To make life easier, the trail has been split into six parts, each between 9 and 15 miles in length, meaning that walkers can bite off as much or as little of the trail as suits them. You may want to complete the trail in one go, over a handful of days, using accommodation along the trail and maybe calling on the services of a local baggage transfer company. You could extend your break by staying two nights in each place, and adding one of the nearby circular walks on alternate days. If this isn’t for you, why not stay in one place and spread the completion of the trail by doing one part at a time, using public transport or taxis. There is advice about logistics on every part of the trail, to help with planning your break. Access this info on the page for each segment.
