Fantastic hike. Going to reiterate what’s already been said about the mud. It’s about 2 miles to the Kulana’ahane trail and then 3-3.5 miles to the peak. The ridge line is exposed and can get super windy. It gets pretty steep as well, including a section that involves ropes. I’ve never dealt with so much mud in my life. My Lowa GTX boots were caked in mud and traction was non-existent, especially over the last mile. The views are worth it but I wouldn’t recommend this hike for beginners.

So the 5 stars are as high as my hopes for this hike. Newer to the island and really hoping to find a hiking buddy! Please message me on Instagram: @d_stat so we can adventure together :)

Pretty well maintained. But with all the rain we’ve been getting it’s MUD-DY. Be prepared to negotiate the mud. Or just enjoy a mud spa. I got really dehydrated, so I’d recommend a camelback and a few water bottles and snacks. The views are incredible. The ridges aren’t to narrow but I’d reconsider if you’re afraid of heights. Have fun and take lots of photos. The views are magnificent and the plants are lush

Love this hike. It’s long, but worth it. Bring lots of water and bug spray. If you get an early start you can take you time and enjoy a beautiful picnic at the top. Would start this one after 2pm or you’ll be hiking in the dark.

When people say this is a muddy trail, they aren’t kidding. There are also many (10ish) streams you must cross- there is no way around it!! I was slightly ill prepared and made it 3/4 of the way of before having to head back down due to time because I had a flight to catch. But wow, the views even from this point were amazing. 5/5 recommend

long muddy hike. you cross the river 18 times so you can clean your self off on the 18th one. there isnt any way around the the river crossings and mud holes so just walk straight through them to save time. when you see a side trail to the left with another group of signs that say "kulana'ahane trail" this is the trail to the stairway to heaven. dont keep going on that wide roadway its a dead end, waisted almost 2 hrs to try and detour back onto the main trail going up the steep mountain through all the bushes. ended up just back tracking onto the main trail "kulana'ahane" instead.

prepared for muddy based of prior reviews and it definitely was! bring microspikes and you'll be fine as long as you don't mind getting dirty! totally worth it!

Muddy is an understatement. Prepare yourself for a mud bath. However the views are absolutely phenomenal and worth the trek. I am biased though since I did get engaged at the top But seriously best views in Hawaii!

Fun hike! It is long and and suited for experienced hikers. Be prepared to hike 6-7 hours. It's not the hardest trail around, but the combination of endurance and relative difficulty should be noted before attempting. For those who have not done it before and are unsure if they should, I would recommend they first try Kulana'ahane to H-3 Summit Saddle which also is in Moanalua Valley - this hike is easier, a little longer (build up endurance) and will familiarize you with Moanalua Valley. I would also recommend a harder but shorter ridge hike like Mt. Olympus - if you are good with both of those, you should be in good shape for this hike.

Muddy and washed out. Significantly busier than I was expecting, apparently some tours are taking people on the trail who probably shouldn’t be. I recommend starting earlier to avoid them, but the clouds may obscure views if you do. It’s not an easy hike, spikes would probably help.

Aloha! This is the back way and legal way to stairway to heaven. It is longer, more difficult, and more dangerous than the front way. Almost everyone I come across from the back way either hated it or regretted it and ended up going down the front way because they didn't want to go the back way back down. The front way is illegal, but it is much safer. Yes there is the risk of getting caught. If you go the front way, BE QUIET and be respectful to the neighborhood. If you have any question regarding the front way feel free to ask on my insta @wollyhoodshoots.
