Hiked 12/3. The hike from bear lake to dream lake is our favorite in the park, regardless of the season. Today was no exception. We took snowshoes with and used them the whole time. The hike from the parking lot to dream lake could be easily done with micro spikes. From there to lake Haiyaha will require snowshoes in its current state. Less traffic on this trail and recent snow makes it loose, narrow and uneven in a lot of places. You’ll have to stay tight and inside in a lot of places to keep from sinking a falling down the ridge.

With caution, it’s very doable. We are not super experienced in snowy mountains and managed just fine. It’s worth the trip.

Great views easy addition to flattop
Worth the extra effort

Did this hike Last Saturday. Very cold, windy and snow was deep. Didn't seem safe to complete for many reasons. Snow covered any sign of trail, so would recomend GPS tracking to avoid getting lost.

UPDATE (6:23 PM): This afternoon, Rocky Mountain National Park rangers were notified that the US Air Force Academy was asking for assistance in locating a missing Cadet Candidate, Micah Tice, 20, who was last heard from late Friday, November 23. Tice’s vehicle was located at the Longs Peak Trailhead late this afternoon. It is unknown what Tice’s planned destination or route was. The weather on Longs Peak on Saturday was poor with significant snow accumulation, extremely high winds and bitter cold temperatures.

Tonight, members of Rocky Mountain National Park’s Search and Rescue team are coordinating search efforts that will begin early tomorrow morning. Teams will focus their efforts tomorrow on the lower sections of the Longs Peak Trail to the Keyhole and Chasm Junction.

Park rangers would like to hear from anyone who has been in the Longs Peak area since Saturday morning, November 24 or who may have had contact with Tice regarding his planned route on Longs Peak. Please call Rocky Mountain National Park at (970) 586-1204.

Missing since Saturday Micah Tice....
If you are on the trail tomorrow keep an eye out for him. I'm putting a photo up as well.
Search and Rescue will be out as well.
Prayers appreciated.
God Bless

Gorgeous hike. I hiked this in August. The raspberries lining the switchbacks right above treeline were a welcome surprise

Nice moderate hike. The snow on the trail is well packed, microspikes were nice but not needed. Any travel off of the main trail (even by 1 foot) will need snowshoes.

Took 15 hours but it was amazing

This hike will convince you to move to Colorado! Have completed it several times and it still never gets old. Bring a couple of liters and crush it. If you do it in March, prepare to post hole for six hours.

Fun trail. Good grade for trail running, but there can be crowds. Was lucky enough to catch a rainbow on my run.

Absolutely beautiful hike! It was definitely cold and snowy, so I would recommend micro spikes or at least chains for snow boots. At points closer to the lake, the trail would almost disappear in the snow drifts, and the rocks by the lake were very slippery.

If the weather was a little better, I would definitely give this hike 5 stars!

10/29/18 Beautiful trail. There were some icy spots but not too bad. Was able to run most of the trail, but ended up stopping several times to take in the waterfalls.

I got to Bear Lake trailhead at 8am Sunday. Very few cars. I had the whole trail to myself pretty much. I did Emerald Lake and then on the way back turned and headed to Lake Haiyaha. I'm glad I did because it was the best part. Its steeper and harder then Bear Lake trail. At the end there are a bunch of boulders to scramble over to get to the lake. Be careful, I fell, snow is deep and make sure you know how to get back to the trail. Its not as easy as it looks. Really incredible. Wear traction. Wear traction. When I came down the whole lot was full and there was a mile long line of cars trying to get in but they were routed to the visitor center.

Great hike even when some snow cover is present. Did this Black Friday of 2017 and at that time of year, plenty of snow was on the trail. The first half of the trail, the snow will be packed from the heavy usage of snowshoers going to the closer lakes, but the final leg to Lake Haiyaha can be much deeper and looser. Did fine running in trail running shoes with Yaktrax, but almost everyone else was in snowshoes. Saw only one set of prints headed up the final leg on a holiday afternoon in late November. Very beautiful in the cold time of year.

Gorgeous

absolutely beautiful!

Love

Great hike! 85% of the trail was ice covered. Make sure you pack some crampons!

Great hike with varying elevation gains and flats. As of 10/13/2018... I would recommend yak tracks. It’s very slippery and icy in the shade which is the majority of this hike

My son and I arrived today from Cleveland. The hike was wonderful and challenging. As we climbed the wind picked up and temp dropped. We didn’t start till 2:30 and made it above tree line and to the final push to Hallett but happily turned back. It was wonderful but the weather reminded us to have respect for Mother Nature. What a beautiful hike.

Did this hike in July on a clear day. Left at 0200, reaches the summit at 0830 and returned to the car by 1430. Views are awesome. The views before the keyhole were cool and once you cross to the other side the views change and get even better. Some slippery areas, but very doable.

beautiful views on this hike. forests kept us cool.

This has taken the top spot for my favorite hike in RMNP.. We hiked it on Oct. 9th. The Ranger Station there has been closed for the season for several weeks now. Decent size parking lot but even with the cold, snowy, slushy conditions there were quite a few cars there and people on the trail. We did not need our spikes this time. The scenery is breathtaking under fresh snow. Copeland Falls is .4 miles in. Take the side trail to lower falls and follow it to upper Falls. There, you can connect back to the main trail. About another mile or so is Calypso Cascades. The trail gets a little steeper from here up to Ouzel. When you reach Ouzel, walk to the left side before the bridge down by the big rock and step out to the right to get a better view of the top of the Falls. You can’t see if from the bridge. We read about the trail up to the top of the Falls but weather conditions did not permit us to locate it. We took our time going up and MANY photo stops. Ascended in about 2 hrs 20 min. Hung at Ouzel long enough to eat a bite of lunch (it was really cold) then descended in about 50 min.
Loved every minute of it.

One of the best drives with large elevations. Many stops to watch mountains and valleys.

Upper and lower Copeland Falls are a short easy hike less than half a mile in. Calypso Cascades is about 2 miles in and is slightly more uphill. Both are beautiful!! We arrived at the trailhead about 3:30pm and there were several spots to park. If you hike past Calypso Cascades about another mile you'll find Ouzel Falls. Much steeper and took about another hour up. Beautiful!! Took us about 3.5 hours round trip.

If you like mountain streams, this is the hike. Actual
Hiking time to Ouzel Falls and back was a shade over 4 hours. We spent another 90 minutes enjoying the views and talking to people. My wife and I are 52 and walking poles a good idea for this trail. You will need them to go to the top of the Ouzel Falls. You can get really close to where the falls spill over the mountain. We were there on a Tuesday in late September. Main parking lot was 80 pct full. Very popular.
