Roanoke Map

This is a nice, easy trail if you're wearing a toddler on your back! The woods are beautiful, the creek is relaxing, and I always see some sort of wildlife.

We hike Smart View every year and it’s always a delight. Enough challenge to keep it interesting. Beautiful forest, creeks, and scenery. We didn’t see anyone else on the trail - only picnickers nearby. Enjoy!

We had a great time hiking this trail today! Started late - after 5p - and went clockwise at ranger’s suggestion. It was perfect! We ended with shady wooded terrain - a little steep in places - but manageable. Lots of wild blackberries and we crossed a small creek near the end. Had to dodge a few cow patties but otherwise a great hike!

Great place to get away! Can’t wait for all the changes they have planned to go into effect

One of our favorites. Not too hard, not too easy. Goes through the woods and across the highway and over some cow fields, so the variety of scenery was great. Saw some cool wildlife too. Definitely recommend!

A good quick hike. The trail is definitely steep at times. We enjoyed looking at the falls and the caves. The entrance looked like a private driveway but it was easy enough to find.

Lovely hike with very pretty waterfalls at the beginning. The 2 mile loop is pretty steep at times. We saw the sign after hiking with our dog that dogs are NOT allowed on this trail.

Loved the tranquility and dappled sunlight. Surrounded by beautiful green foliage. Wish we could get closer to the water, but still lovely. The blue trail offers insight into history which adds to this hike's value.

Nice hike. Lots of poison ivy. Plenty of tulip poplar trees. If solitude is what you are looking for, this is your trail. It is very lightly trafficked. The waterfall was a little disappointing. Some challenging upgrades.

Nice hike, moderate distance, moderately strenuous, great views, very windy and pretty cool this morning, no evidence of recent bad weather. will do this again. Info station volunteers were great! When you’ve finished your hike done a few miles down the parkway at Mabry Mill. Great food!

Great hike!! Not too heavily-trafficked a lá McAfee’s or Dragon’s Tooth. Gorgeous view of the falls. The little gem of a side trail off of Knight to the creek is lovely. The only thing that bugged me is that the trailhead is CLEARLY marked ‘No Dogs’. But coming back there were a few ‘dog people’ on the trail who clearly didn’t care about the rules or the social compact (not leaving dog poop everywhere!). The Nature Conservancy has that rule for a reason you thoughtless, selfish twits.

Average uphill trail. Nothing stood out. The star is more enjoyable when you drive up.

I did this hike with my 5 children (ages 13-4). it is definitely family friendly which was really nice. I took other's advice and we went up the blue trail and back home on the red trail. the trails were extremely well marked and very well maintained. because of the heavy snows this spring very little was in bloom yet. I was a little disappointed because I thought we were hiking to a waterfall similar to what we experienced hiking the Cascades but instead we hiked to an overlook that looks across to the other mountain where the waterfall is. you can only see the waterfall from a distance and I'm not sure how well you can see it once the trees bloom. we did have a lovely day and enjoyed the woods very much.

Good little hike. Johnson’s Farm was interesting but other than that there is not much to see other than forest for remainder of hike. Views are obstructed by trees and the feeling of being on a hike is sort of lost as you hear mowers and work being done on nearby parkway.

Bottom Creek is a good solitary hike. I've hiked this trail several times and each time find myself in a soul-searching sort of mood. this hike is good to help you work through any issues in your life. Very tranquil.

Awesome trail. Not too hard or too easy. Beautiful views!!

Today we hiked Harkening Hill in Bedford County, Virginia, adjacent to the Peaks of Otter Lodge. Gorgeous spring day, brisk clear weather and no wind (yay). We had hoped to go back to Thunder Ridge but the Parkway access was blocked at the Peaks. So my hiking companion said “surely there are trails here!” And she was right! Harkening Hill is a 3.5 mile single track loop with a 921 foot elevation gain within 1.5 mile climb to the summit. It is located directly across the Parkway from the Peaks of Otter lodge. Lovely creek beds, birds, chipmunks, typical flora and fauna, abound. Some say moderate but we found it rather easy because the trail is well maintained and not a lot of boulders until you reach the summit.... then HUGE ones! However, it is straight UP. Beautiful views which will vanish when the trees leaf.

This is a great little spot for a quick hike for our family. Easy to navigate for our two boys and plenty to see even if you only do the short loop.

Nice quick little hike. Had some cool caves and water falls. Directions were a little difficult to find it but once we did it was fine. Read the plaque once you start so you can understand how it came about.

Great hike. Waterfalls are nice but on the smaller side. Went there in the winter when falls were completely frozen which I highly recommend going to see.

loved it hiked the blue to the red and back tracked down the yellow ,we did it with my 9 month old ,very shaded peaceful hike

Pretty nice day hike. Well maintained. Well marked. Uphill most of the way. Roanoke Star is worth seeing whether you hike or drive to it. I just think that any scenery is better enjoyed when you “earn” it! We hiked up and back. Ate dinner, then drove up to see it at night. Very impressive views day or night.

Steep hike the first 1.5 miles. After that it's smooth sailing and very nice. Beautiful caves and water fall

Little more difficult then expected but I was wearing a weighted vest and going late in the day. The inclines are mostly all at the beginning and then they level off and make for a really enjoyable hike. The trail is thin on certain point so if you like hiking side by side with someone you may want another hike.

Great for a relaxing day. The .7 to the summit is legitimate the rest is very easy. Good for first timers and beginners

Moderate trail, great for a relaxing trail walk.

Nice hike. No big views but nice trail thru the woods. I will say the trails are not particularly well marked and the map doesn’t reflect all the intersections you’ll come across.

Very peaceful. Trails clearly marked. Saw a couple of deer.

Great place. They respectfully ask for no dogs on this trail. Trails are well marked. Lots of wildlife. Great view of the falls. Would like to find the house and the cemetery.
