We got off trail several times, particularly around the lake. If you are just hiking, I recommend following the blue diamond marked trail around the lake instead. It seemed much prettier and keeps you closer to the lakeside. I would say it is a moderate trail, fairly shady, on the rocky side. My dog did okay with it but he’s part billy goat.

beautiful trail, only downside for when we went was the bathroom was disgusting and we found some garbage in the trail. (I threw it out, don't worry).

I didn’t read the reviews prior and I know it was a loop but the first two miles in was walking on a road... and hubby kept questioning me so I turned around after about 2 miles in. I also noticed I had no signals to confirm the trail and it stopped recording after 15 mins in. But luckily I didn’t give up and we drove up to the vista lookout and there was the beauty we were looking for

Nice hike! We started the loop on the fire road and not on the rim side which we found to be the better option. It drops you into the military sink hole then you come out on the rim viewpoint (which you can also drive to). About a mile after the viewpoint the AllTrails map has you take a left on an unmarked trail; I’m not sure if this was the right way or if we were supposed to stay on the main trail, but we made it back anyways!

We did about 4 miles total of this trail segment. Lots of steep, fall line climbs that are short and sweet. Many down trees. No really good place to park. Overall a decent walk in the woods.

A total of 3 miles of double track and 3 miles of scenic singletrack make this a great hike. Nice views of woods canyon lake. You can start at the boat launch trailhead for a 3 mile loop around the lake instead.

I expected this to be a great hike from the beginning. we spotted an Arizona black rattlesnake at the beginning of the trail. after hiking the Fred Naught trail we continued on the Arizona trail until accessing the pipeline road. that was the most direct route back. great hike with awesome trees.

Horseback riding

Absolutely amazing!! Beautiful ride! It does get narrow and quite technical behind the backside of the lake for a short distance. It’s important to bring veteran and surefooted trail horses for this section. Our crew did amazing and it was just enough challenge to make it fun!!!!

Main complaint about this trail is how confusing it is before you get to the lake. Recommend going counter clockwise for sure. Other than that, trail is wide and has a lot of shade. We saw an elk and a horny toad and plenty of cool birds. The lake was beautiful but very busy with people for a random Monday afternoon. Unfortunately we saw a lot of human trash so if you wanted to take a trash bag on the hike, I usually do but forgot this time

If you go counter clockwise you are on a boring road for the first half and it’s all pretty flat and your decent is down. If you go clockwise you can get a little more exercise but you ending view is terrible. I would suggest and put and back going clockwise for best view and workout.

I coupled this with the Houston Brothers trail to make for a great little backpacking trip! Beautiful trail with running water still. Cute little cabins along the way, too.

The rim trail was beautiful and easy to follow. The second half was on a combo of the old rim road, which was well marked but more like a rock road than trail, and general crook trail, which was more or less unmarked. Overall a great hike with beautiful views

nice trail now that we "figured it out". basically stay right on the forest service roads and then loop the lake. we had to explore quite a bit to figure this out. nice trail overall. we saw elk, a water snake and a baby horny toad :)

This hike is ok. Be prepared to drive 12 miles on a rocky dirt road along the rim to get here. The cabin is really neat, but other than that, I didn't think the trail was anything spectacular. The Tunnel Via Arizona Trail is much prettier & you can hike up to this trail to see the cabin, then head back down. You will also not have to drive on the gnarly dirt road.

First to Review

Parked at the trail head here & made this an out & back 10 mile hike. There’s a stock tank in the beginning, and otherwise the creek was dry. The trail was easy to follow & well maintained. Lots of shade & very few other people out on the trail.

Too much logging in area made for very little shade the first 1.75 miles or so. It just wasnt anything special. I was happy it wasnt terribly rocky in most areas. And it was well marked and easy to follow.

nice hike. gorgeous weather with snow on the ground still in some places. water was flowing the entire trail and we had to get creative crossing it many times if we didn't want to get our shoes wet.

What a great easy trail! We recorded 4.5 miles and followed the trail other than a short off trail to hike part of the General Crook. At least a dozen vistas the last 1.5 miles for great photo ops or just to take a break.
