Awesome trail with a nice surprise at the top! Good cardio incline at the beginning, middle levels out for you to catch your breath, and then a steep incline at the top. Well worth it tho!

It’s short but a very fun and rewarding workout. Great views from the top. Hop on the Switzerland trail at the trailhead if you want to add on some mileage.

Trail is boot-packed snow and ice the entire way, so yaktrax were helpful. Helene and Odessa were both frozen over, but still well worth the views. Trail earns its moderate rating as you ascend back up to Helene after Odessa (I can see why people one-way this trail and include Fern Lake). This is definitely a less trafficked trail out of the Bear Lake area—didn’t see a soul for over two hours with a sunrise start.

Nice easy trail! I hiked the trail with my young daughter and we had no issues. Good views but I wouldn’t exactly call this a moderate trail, more along the easier side.

lovely trail with a noice rock at the top pretty busy though

Striking views of shear rock faces, a true mountain lake

The trail had spectacular views of Estes and looking at the entrance for the national park. I didn’t like how soft the trail itself was. I sunk down into the sand with every step. It was quite the challenge there and back with good elevation gain. The views made up for the little faults it has.

It's a pretty trail that I'm sure is nicer during the summer months. More than half the trail is now iced over towards the higher elevation. Made for an interesting trip up and down. Once you arrive, its very nice view but I'm partial to others in RMNP like Sky Pond, Emerald, etc. PS: The actual hike is more like 4 miles each way if my Suunto is correct.

great views and rocky trail makes for low mud on the rare rainy days in BoCo.

So happy we did this hike! The weather ended up being way better than we expected. We had to guess our way for most of the hike bc the snow covered the trail. It’s pretty slushy right now so I’d recommend waterproof shoes! We made the scramble up to the top through the crevasse and enjoyed the amazing views!

Absolutely gorgeous hike! A steady ascent led to a rocky area with a fantastic view. This is an easy hike to do with dogs. There are bag stations. The trail isn’t very rocky.

Great time hiking, camping, and fishing. Can get crowded during the summer but the father out you get, the less people you run in to.

Great trail, plenty of wildlife and awesome views!!

Beautiful hike! We got to the trailhead at 8 a.m. and we were the 4th car in the lot and pretty much had the trail to ourselves. The first two miles are very easy with minimal elevation gain and smoother trails. Miles 3 & 4 were a constant climb at a moderate rate. The trail got rockier so I’d recommend good shoes, they were very slick when wet. The fall colors were still very vivid today. After 11a, the trail got significantly more crowded and all of the lots were full, so be sure to get there early if you don’t want to add additional miles to your hike. The waterfall is one of the best I’ve seen so far, and the lake was barely visible through the fog but still worth the climb!

Amazing 360 view on top of the rock. Make certain you scale the crevasse between the rock to get to the very top. Truly breathtaking views.

Moderate hike climbing 1k feet over 2 miles with a steep stretch the last .25 mile of the trail. Good for everyone jut go prepared with water, protein and maybe a good walking stick.

2 hours in and 1 hour out and that was with lots of stops along the way.

Amazing hike.

Nice trail. Great views of Estes Park and RMNP. Some steep parts but nothing really more than steep steps. Hermit Park is a very nice area and the trail is well marked and well maintained. check on the fee before you go in.

It’s a great hike with a nice goal and view - really moderate and nice to do if you arrive late to the park one day.

Great hike with beautiful views. We went around 9am on a Saturday and there were minimal people on the trail.

Gf & I are 26. We went with another couple after a week of moving here. Awesome trail, not to strenuous. Made it to the top in just under an hour after taking a couple 30-60sec rests. View at the top was amazing. Worth the hike 100% would go back and recommend to others.

This is a very enjoyable hike. Parts of it are steeper then I expected, but I'm a flatlander so anything with an incline is steep. There is a "new" section that has been cut, off of the Walker Ranch Trail Loop parking area. Not sure how long it has been this way.

Beautiful hike! Enjoyed the amazing falls, peaceful lake and wildlife!

Beautiful trail. In my opinion it's a moderate hike, nothing too challenging. The scenery is just magnificent, but the trail is not always marked very well. i started on a Saturday, 7 a.m. There were very few cars in the (pretty big) parking lot. After my return at 11 a.m., there were still quite a few spots available.

Great hike but take it to Odessa lake and finish the loop to Bear Lake

We started at Bear Lake trailhead to Odessa and then back to Bear Lake. This trail had some outstanding views, and Lake Odessa was gorgeous. I also really enjoyed this because there wasn't a huge crowd on the trail either. Although there was some great scenery, a decent portion of the trail was a bit boring in comparison to other hikes you can do close by. I highly recommend this trail, but after trying Sky Pond and Black Lake.

The is our favorite hike! It’s challenging, beautiful and chalked full of wildlife. We saw about 20 Elk, 6 deer and our bonus for getting to fern lake was 2 moose right at the mouth of the lake. Parking was limited so we added about 2 miles to our trek. All said and done we hiked 10 miles and enjoyed every minute!

beautiful hike!!! loved that all dogs must be on leash or risk $300 fine no exceptions. For those of us with tricky dogs this was a wonderful find!!

go counter clockwise! It still has some steep climbs but it will help you avoid climbing the steep stairs.

loved the water and lots of trees! great hike! will definitely be back

got there at 10 am on Friday plenty of space in the parking lot.

Lovely and manageable hike.

came on a Tuesday...trail was empty . amazing 360 views at the top. moderate hike...pretty aspens here and there. clear signage and lots of parking. I recommend this hike for a short one

A bit crowded on a September weekend, but most trails in the park are at this time. We had to do about .8 miles of road-walking from the shuttle stop, where we were lucky to get a parking space (there were tons of people circling the lots and walking the road). Much of the trail goes through the burn area, which detracts from the scenery, and it's also the most horse-poop-covered trail I've seen in the park. Gross. The lake is lovely and we saw a couple of moose (and the crowds thin after each viewpoint - the pond and the falls - so there weren't tons of people who made it all the way to the lake. We didn't have time to do Odessa, which is reportedly great, but just Fern Lake as a destination was only so-so compared to other hikes in RMNP.

Short hike with great views. I’ve done it a few times and it’s never crowded.
