Really enjoyable even in the cold. The views of the lake were really something.

Directions only take you to turn for TH...2 more winding miles on road 500 to go. Hiked in early December. Beautiful in light snow. Did not see a soul. Stairs make final downward trek to pillar easy even in snow. Checked out accessible ledge with overhang to the right on unmaintained part of trail. 4 miles out and back through lovely stretch of forest. After hike, continued up road 500 for longer hike and elevation gain. Added almost 4 miles rt and map shows I could have kept going. Upper part of road is blocked to cars.

3 miles of dirt road up to trail head. There was ice on the road and we got up in an Impreza but I wouldn’t try it without a 4WD vehicle. Once on the hike the first half is In the trees but once you get further up there are good 360 views of the valley. Up top is awesome with a fire lookout tower and more 360 views! There was about 2 feet of snow on the upper mountain but it was still easy to do.

Great views of the lake, river canyon and mountains. We were literally the only people on the trail and only 2 boats on the lake far below. Signage for the trail wasn't very obvious from the road -- park in the Upper Deschutes Day Use Area in the single car section, then walk the short distance back up to the main road and cross it; the trail starts on the other side. All effort and elevation gain (pretty minimal at 600 ft) is in the first mile to the top. Looking down into the canyon at certain points on the rim can feel a little freaky if you have any fear of heights! (Even driving up and down the canyon in this spectacular state park may result in white knuckles. Road was dry when we were there, but chains are recommended if there are winter conditions.)

11/25/18 road going up to the trailhead is pretty slick, drive safely! :)

Super cool bit of Oregon history here

Went in from south (Wildcat Campground). More than a half dozen notable creek crossings and smaller ones too. Water level reasonable in late fall. Decent signage but did not notice final sign to pillars. Followed trail but it petered out when the deadfall really began. Was fighting early sunset and had traveled close to six miles before turning around. Will take north trail next to see where trails meet and hopefully get even closer to pillars. Great way to spend a chilly day. Road up was good, including gravel part.

beautiful even though it was short!

Definition of a steady incline from the start to finish but wasn’t too difficult. Views from the top are incredible!

A great hike with breathtaking views. Hiked this today with a family of 5, 10 years being the youngest and a energetic dog. Mid-November and it was a cool start, still plenty of hikers! Very popular trail. I was worried reading some of these reviews that this was going to be challenging. The kids were just about to think it was when we saw the watch towers and knew we were close. We used a Garmin and found it to be about 2.4 miles to the top. (and as stated in other reviews, it is up, the whole way!). We made it in about 70 minutes up and 50 minutes down, in good tennis shoes, nothing fancy. Path is relatively soft and easy to walk, top has more rock “stairs” and can require more careful footing. As stated, it was cool today, if hiking on a warm day, start early and bring plenty of water. Had a great time, highly recommend!

It is 35 minutes from Sisters, and all but the last mile+ were good/great roads. The last little bit is rough but doable. Not a lot of parking, both lots full when we left and it is not peak season. But there is a pit toilet at the trailhead.

We are an active family, young children and inactive people will likely need to take their time.

great views and nice loop

What an awesome hike. Did some fishing also and we caught a trout and a salmon. Pretty easy hike for some beautiful views.

Beautiful spot for a sunrise. I recommend traveling down river and exploring the canyon.

Went hear last November looking for hikes without snow in the bend area! This was was a great little hike in a canyon!

We loved this hike! Beautiful views once you get up out of the trees (the views within the trees were still pretty). This is an uphill hike, the entire way- there was no reprieve. We had to stop a few times to catch our breath. The views from the top were worth it! Two lookouts to see, one is boarded up and the other is active. We could see 8 mountain peaks, even through the slight haze. There were a few 2wd vehicles at the trailhead, though the road is a little rough.

This is one of my top ten favorite hikes of all time. The views were stunning (especially of Mount Shasta) and the terrain was really different. It was fun to scale the rocks and make our way up to the stop. We drove into the waypoint which was right near the official trailhead and we'd recommend others to do the same. I think a 2wd car could make it there. It took about an hour and 45 to get up and then an hour and 30 back down. We were hiking with our 6 mo old pup who had a blast. Think some dogs could get scared with the rocks and ledge but she did great and it was super fun to watch her navigate.

Today we hiked this trail for the second time. Two years ago we went at Thanksgiving and we had quite some snow and couldn’t see any of the views. But loved it nevertheless. Today was a hot autumn day and totally clear. I had forgotten how steep this hike was, but it’s oh so worth it once reaching the summit. The view will blow your mind. You’ll see a big chunk of the Cascadian mountain range, a fire lookout and a historical building. Would definitely do this hike again!

Went today for the 2nd time. Totally forgot about the steep uphill hike, just remembered the amazing and rewarding view when you make it up to the top. Will definitely go again!

Worth the hike up! The views are beautiful. 360 degree perspective. My 7 year old made it a slog but we eventually got there and so happy we did!

beautiful hike. not a hard hike at all

Beautiful fall hike, first time today with my Rottweiler named Rambo, tricky rock crop at bottom down by river had to help rambo down rocks about 6' drop not so easy for older dogs. Beautiful canyon views and fall colors along river.

Beautiful views. its not a easy climb
