3 stars just might be me being picky...if I lived in Banff and just needed a quick up/down hike I would do this. Being from a bigger city, though, I like the views of a hike to be without civilization in them... that said, if you want a view of Banff town & surrounding area, this will suit you just fine.

Great hike and amazing views !

Amazing view, but not the best experience. The lookout is so crowded, it’s like a mosh pit.

Note that the trail is icy. However, as of the 20th of October, the bus road is closed, and not as slippery. Best that you walk up this road if you don’t have cleats.

Went in the winter, and it was a very flat, and relatively unspectacular view from the end of the trail. It was still fun and nice, but I’d need to go in the summer to give it a fair rating I think.

This is a great trail to get some fantastic views of the waterfalls Johnston Canyon has to offer. The trail is improved/paved until you reach the upper falls and then it is a well marked dirt trail that is easy to follow. After the upper falls we needed hiking spikes as the trail was rather icy in spots and for the final descent into the valley that holds the ink pots. Overall a moderate hike if you go all the way to the pots. The views at the Ink Pots are worth the hike themselves but the waterfalls are spectacular and really offer some great views along the way.

be careful of the snikey park wardens watching for off leash dogs.

Absolutely amazing for a family friendly hike. Definitely go to the upper falls to see the many levels of the waterfall. Spectacular! We had gone first week of Sep and it was great weather. Had a bunch of boys and 3 toddlers within the group and they all managed to walk to the lower and upper falls although it can be challenging for little legs for sure.

Ended up off trail and found myself bushwhacking and climbing precariously along a rock-face.. not what I had intended!! Lol but seriously stunning views :)

Fairly new to hiking and found this to be a perfect adventure for my skill level. Amazing views of Spray Lake and the surrounding mountains. The pass was snow covered as was most of the trail up. There are a few steep and wet spots where the trail really thins out. We had a beautiful sunny day but would have liked cleats in parts. Nice to see the Wind Tower peak so close but would not want to attempt summiting that this time of year.

Super easy trail - it’s perfect for a late afternoon if you want to get out of the city and see some nice scenery. Its perfect for dogs too I took my male dog and hiked up to the hoodoo and back. This area can get busy so it’s best to go at a later time in the day.

it is closed now!

Completed this hike on the 15th of October. Provides some breathtaking views, and only takes 30-45 minutes to reach the peak. Great reward for little effort! :)
As mentioned, it can be a bit slippery. However, no ice cleats needed, just take care.

Went on Saturday Oct 13 (the year winter came early). Snow covered the trail the whole way with some bare spots on the bottom 3rd.
The trail was well packed and easy to see and navigate till the top. At the top, it appeared to be less traveled and then the trail disappeared on the last little bit. Here we had to trudge through some deeper snow (would sink to your knees roughly) to get to the other side and see the valley.
I'd recommend cleats and gators. Weather was cold and windy at the top.
As mentioned before, park right at the trail head as opposed to driftwood parking lot.
Did the whole trip in 3.5hrs, that included walking around exploring at the top and having a lunch/beer! Great hike for beginners that want to step it up a notch.

NAFTA and dairy quota talks aside;Trump and Trudeau supporters alike would find this hike enjoyable. It is an easy to moderate hike; we went well past the waterfall and saw some gorgeous boulders in the creek. There was a RC car group driving their toys on the rocks, for whatever reason. One and done for me.

Did this hike at sunrise 10/13. We had yaktraks but didn’t need them. Quick little summit great for a morning hike from lowed by breakfast in town.

This is an easy hike and has beautiful Scenery, but disappointing. The trail just end and seem very Anticlimactic. At the end you can hear a waterfall that is just out of view, unless you are adventuresome and crawl up the creek on logs and rocks. I do love the views of Heart Mountain and the beauty in the canyon. Have done this hike twice once in the spring and now in the fall. The trail was snow covered and becoming icy.

Great trail to start getting more difficult terrain. The trail is in great shape despite snow all morning.

5 starts for the lake itself but too crowded for my liking.

Very short but worth the visit! Super easy walk, no spikes needed but it’s muddy so hiking boots best. Very pretty self guided hike with a nice waterfall at the end. Almost too short!

Did this hike on 10/9/18 lots of ice because of the Early snowfall this past week the hike was easy and the views were spectacular a great in town hike if you just have a half a day and need something fun to do.

V nice super easy slipped a bunch icy as tits.

This is a very easy trail that is paved most of the way with handrails! The waterfalls are beautiful - however this is such a well know place make sure to get up super early to beat lots of crowds or try going during the week.

Really enjoyed this hike not to difficult and had great views at the top we hiked on 10/8/18 in a light snow fall lots of ice so crampons were needed to be safe.

Easy loop with a beautiful view over the lake.

So muddy and hard for walk when it covered by snow but the scenery is very beautiful

Family friendly hike, a view of the Banff townsite at the end.

Easy trail with great views. Saw tons of wildlife including goats, chipmunks and even a wolf!

Even on an overcast day the trail afforded very nice views, especially from the southern bend of Emerald Lake. I extended the hike over Yoho Pass (nothing special) and continued to Yoho Lake (isolated and very pretty) before turning back. Unless you really enjoy a long uphill in increasingly deep snow the work/view tradeoff for heading out to Yoho Lake probably isn't worth the effort at this point in the season.

My review is from the perspective of an amateur landscape photographer.

The trail is ranked as moderate and that's an accurate rating. I'm 62 and in good health didn't have any trouble complementing the hike. The highlights of this hike are the lower and upper falls and the meadows at the end of the trail. ( If you are exhausted from just hiking the lower falls then you should consider turning back. The trail gets steeper from there)

You'll need a tripod and perhaps a ND filter to capture both the lower and upper falls with the "flowing" water effect. You'll also need lots of patience as this is a very popular hike and there is very little room to setup a tripod without someone bumping into you. But if is worth the effort.

If you have made it to the Upper Falls and you still have lots of energy, then you should proceed to the "Ink Pots" . Personally I find the ink pots nit to be very photogenic but the valley/meadows they sit in is one of the prettiest I've ever seen. You have a large meadow surrounded by snow capped mountains with a glacially fed stream running through the middle. I spent two hours just wondering around shooting various compositions, having a great time.

One caution: These are the Canadian Rockies. You need to be prepared for cold weather even in the summer

Highly recommended.
