trail running

Only ran this once, several years ago during the government shutdown. It was eerie quiet with the campground not in use, and there were deer poking around. A steady up and a steady down, good for training for longer trail races.

We clocked in at 5.5 miles. We did it as a sunset hike. We started at 4:20 I think I would have started it at 3:30 so we get the sunset coming back down! You must park on the street there is no parking lot. To get to the top just cross the bridge and stay to the left this app have the correct downloaded road. Dogs are allowed on leash! It does get steep on some parts. There are three benches you pass on the way up. when you pass the Henninger Flats sign there are benches to the left. There is also a geological marker to the left of the sign of your staring at it. Bring a head lamp if your hiking it in the dark! Over all it’s a beautiful sunset hike!

Love this camp to just chill and cook. Great for hammocks and good views of town.

Great site for a beginner backpacking trip. There is no water at the campground, so come prepared. We hiked up at night with an almost full moon and did not need our flashlights until we arrived at the campground. Strongly recommend going up Friday night if you plan on camping, as you will get better campgrounds. Also, strongly recommend being dropped off and picked up, as parking is in a residential neighborhood and might be at a premium. No open fires on CG, but you can burn wood in the provided stoves.

Great views of the city below.

I really enjoyed this hike. However, the grotto was actually hard for me to find! When you get to the bottom of the ravine, there’s a wide open shaded space. From here, it was unclear where to go. I tried two ways. To the right there is a small trail. I followed it for about a mile but it was overgrown by tall grass and seemed to never end. I circled back and went left from that open area. There are lots of rocks here. It didn’t seem clear that I was on a trail. Then suddenly there are large boulders. They can be challenging to climb but if you go up to right, you can more easily navigate down. Eventually you’ll see the grotto beneath you. To get to it, you have to go up to the right and scale more rocks. This then brings you back down to the ground level with the grotto! Woo! I got a little lost getting back out. Watch out for poison ivy!

Definitely MODERATE, not easy. Very pretty but lots of rocks so watch your step!!

This is a great Hike for those who want to be on top of a Mountain. The incline is decent all the way. Has a nice nature Center at the Top along with 7 CampGrounds. This is the Beginning to the San Gabriel Mountains aka Sheep Mountain. Go Early! Avoid the Sun! It’s well worth it. You can see the ocean on Clear days

Where the trail ends the real fun starts : boulder jumping and climbing, canyoneering....

Beautiful trail with lots of great places to stop and admire nature! I would rate it a "medium" instead of "easy" since it's mostly uphill/downhill. We will definitely be hiking here again!

Awesome hike great view at end of trail and campsite for all you campers...

Awesome hike. Views of the campgrounds at the flats are gorgeous! Didn't realize how nice the view actually was until I started hiking down. Part of the Eaton Canyon trail. No shade, bring lots of water and sunblock!

Hiked mid-day in June and temps were high 80's. It was bearable for me, but a challenge. Had to stop a few times.

My group hiked this on 6/14. We began the trail from a turnout on a the highway instead of the circle x ranch entrance. We began around 12:30am and we made it to the grotto around 2:00am, the hike back was pretty fast. We made it back to our cars around 3:30am. This route added 1mile each way to the trail. SkyHighHikingGroup. We get together and hike at night. For all the busy bodys and late night owls. We are based in Los Angeles. Great hike, good workout. There was water in the grotto, hike was easy but the return did make most of us break a sweat. Recommend.

Great hike. But it didn’t feel like an easy one. There’s lots of climbing towards the end to get to the grotto

Favorite trail to take with kids. Just hard enough to keep them challenged without too much complaining, fun boulder scrambling opportunities. Bring a lunch and wear a bathing suit if it's been a wet year, kids love to splash around in the water.

Great winter/spring hike in cooler weather.

I loved it! Only hiked for 6 miles but it was worth it, mostly uphill so not for beginners, it’s great for building up stamina for more difficult hikes. I’d definitely recommend it.

Absolutely beautiful little trail. Driving to the trailhead itself offered gorgeous views of the mountains, canyons, and distant oceans.

The river beds were all dried up, but there is some flowing water when you get down to the grotto. The trail itself is pretty easy, but more towards the moderate side considering some of the loose rock on the somewhat steep inclines down into the canyon.

Although I was wearing long sleeves and pants, I did find a tick on my dog and one burrowing in my side when I got home, so please check yourselves if you do this hike.

Hmm...I only clock about 6 miles up to Henninger based on where I start I’m assuming. Not much scenery and no shade. If you want to build your tolerance of going up hill, I’d recommend this hike. Otherwise, there are other hikes that have a lot more going on (optically).

cool trail Little Rock climbing towards the grotto which made it even more fun, didn't come across any kinds of wild life unfortunately

Straightforward. Check out the museum at the top and the fire lookout tower. I grew up doing this hike but it is no frills.

This was a steady climb uphill. No shade. There are two restrooms (outhouse style) with no running water. There is a water fountain but it doesn't work. You can set up camp for the night or grill in the charcoal pits. If you keep going, you'll eventually get to Mt. Wilson.
