This hike has a pretty moderate incline and as a medium level hiker it wasn't too much of a challenge. I thought because of the mileage it might be a bit of a process for me but surprisingly it went smoothly. There are so many beautiful places to take breaks along the trail. There are many creeks, small waterfalls and beautiful trees and greenery along the trail. Honestly, this hike is so worth it. When you finally get to the top its just incredible. The color of Colchuck is hypnotizing. It is a tranquil teal blue and the ice caps and glaciers nearby on Asgard are pretty cool to check out as well. It is such a great place for photographs. An amazing hike for anyone in my opinion!

Hiked this beauty for the first time today 01.21.19. Took the difficult route and it was a nice steady climb. Definitely want to try the more difficult next time. A great butt kicker!
Wish I had brought my spikes for the last 3/4 mile. Lots of snow, slippery in areas but doable with nice hiking boots. The wind was brutal and the top completely covered in fog. But wow was it gorgeous! Can only imagine the views from top on a clear day.

took my cousin and daughter here a couple years back during a pretty nasty storm, excellent climb up, exhilarating summit!

Insane views. semi-steep with the occasional patch of snow approaching the lake.

Nice gradual hike for 3 miles, with occasional glimpses of the mountains. At this juncture we went left and the trail got quite a bit steeper. (It also gets steeper pretty soon if you go straight/right.) There is a short mineshaft just off the trail right after the turn. just under a half mile up is an old bomber wreckage, which we missed on the way out. We continued up the valley from there and actually put on snowshoes for a while. Beautiful views on the back side if Iron Mountain.

We hiked this last Sunday. This isn’t usually one of my favorite hikes but it is very pretty with the snow. It’s a little slippery at the top but very doable. Definitely go all the way around the lake, if you stop right away you miss a lot of the beauty in my opinion.

Great hike. Gets pretty busy after 10am. Slippery up at the lake but well worth the hike!

Started with light rain. Trail has many spots that could use water bars. Lots of water on the trail. Bring your waterproof boots. No snow from TH to Lower Lena. Light traffic. Bring oxygen mask and TP if you use the TH bathrooms. Ugh!

got to the trail head at 830. there was light rain but not much. the trail was in great shape. a few muddy spots but nothing that couldn't be worked around or walked through.

the falls were all especially strong today. the lower falls are great with a view of the middle falls in the distance.

the middle views are what you come for.

the trail to the upper falls is more difficult than the rest but nothing more than difficult moderate. the upper falls are great as well.

the valley overlook is also stunning.

This was a thrilling and energizing hike. Wasn't too sure how to pack for this hike, (ie. Snowshoes, yaktrax, or micro spikes), but I packed my yaktraxs, and was glad I did. The last 1/4 mile was covered in packed snow. You can get away with good hiking boots alone, but the extra traction helps with the slippery accent and decent. The frozen lake was a great site, but even more amazing was all the avalanches occurring across the lake. We started our hike at 1:30 pm, and reached the lake at 4:10. We were back down at 6:45 pm. Head lamps were a must, and very much used. It was exciting to hike back down in the cover of night, and moonlight.

Tough hike but well worth it. Bring plenty of water.

Unreal. Easy access, fun hike. Feels like summer in mid January.

I did this hike in August 2018. I would recommend starting on this trail in the morning. During the summer there are lots of insects, so bring some repellent. Trail starts out easy, relatively flat, and becomes more difficult as you go. You’ll come across two beautiful bridges, go over some boulders, and climb vertically near the end. The views along the hike are beautiful, and lots of water to be seen. Once you reach the top - the blue alpine water view will take your breath away. Sat and soaked my feet for a bit and enjoyed the view. Some went swimming, although not for long. I clocked about 9.5 miles round trip, rather than the 7.7 listed. I wish I had brought a hiking stick, though!

very beautiful lake and not a lot of people. I did end up taking a side trail that I didn't mean to but it was still a good hike.

Hiked up about 1.5 hours at a slow pace and did not quite make it to the lake. Trail was in good condition; wet and rainy but no snow or ice. Saw other hikers both solo and in groups. Seems well trafficked for a Thursday and therefore great for the solo hiker! Lots of parking (2:00pm Thursday). Bring Northwest Forest Pass. Bathrooms still closed. Beautiful hike!

Steep all the way up. I went in February 2018 on a rare sunny day. Gorgeous views of the gorge. The mountain weather changes drastically up top. Wear layers or at least pack prepared. I remember the wind being brutal. I’d love to go back when the flowers are blooming. Interesting history of the mountain too.

Beautiful and fun hike! the hardest part for me was closer to the top where all the rocks and boulders were but other than that definitely doable and so worth it. its a popular hike so definitely prepare for that and be sure to have a parking pass or get one at the station just a few miles before the hike.

Beautiful trail, arrived at 9:45 am on a Saturday and would recommend going a bit earlier. The hike itself gave a great view of the forests and the cascades at some point. Waterproof shoes are a must, the trail became a creek at times. Lots of cute dogs, saw a small avalanche on the far side of the lake (didn’t interfere with the trail.) I recommend a down layer if you’re planning on sitting near the lake at all, the sun doesn’t get into the valley at all due to it rising and setting so far south.

Beautiful hike! Not much to see on the way up but the lake is stunning. Pretty easy if you’re in some sort of shape. Ice and snow when you’re pretty much to the top. Definitely doable without spikes and poles but HIGHLY RECOMMEND waterproof shoes and layers for up tops. The sun didn’t breach the ridge line so the whole lake was shaded the entire day. We got to trailhead at 9:15 and there weren’t too many people but trail was definitely crowded on our way back down. Would not recommend going on ice.

No snow, no ice. it almost felt like spring. some water on the trail, but nothing anyone can't manage.

Beautiful day with our friends on this winter hike. We definitely needed our Yak Tracks for the snow at the top! Gortex boots made the stream crossing simple.

Weather on the trail was perfect, no need for poles or yaktracks. The trail is super wore down and good for a person looking for a stroll or a family. The upper falls is worth the extra ~1 mi to the top. Also we started our hike at 8:30am and was completely alone most of the time, trail didn't start to get heavy with people until around 10:00.

I hiked this in late fall 2018. Hit an awesome weather window and had above normal temps which made it feel I was hiking in the summer! The trail is marked clearly and attendance was low. Beautiful terrain and the views are incredible. The last mile to the 3rd Burrough was quite the push but well worth it! Once you get to the top you have an up close and personal view of the glacier, breath taking. It was making glacier music, moaning and cracking in the mid day sun. The loop back to Sunrise was just as spectacular, deep valley view with beautiful green lakes while hiking along the rim. Perfect ending to an incredible summer!

Very challenging but worth it. Beautiful scenery.

it's a long haul but well worth every minute of it.

This is one of those hikes I could do and never get tired of. I only do this one in the winter for the scenery.

Attempted upper lena today. The snow line started around the first creek crossing and we were postholing for a while and decided to turn around.

We hiked on 1/12/19. Clear trail most of the way with slick rocks and compacted snow near the top. We managed with athletic shoes, but more traction is highly recommended. Much colder and windy at the lake, but beautiful. High foot traffic. Bathroom is locked due to the government shutdown...
