The entire trail is an ATV trail. Will return during leaf-off when the views will be better. Walked down the trail to the campsite where someone had left their tent unpegged and also left a bunch of garbage in the fire pit. The views, once you reach the roost, are beautiful, but not worth the atv hike in the summer. Lots of wildlife and am eager to return in the winter.

Great family friendly trail with lots of sights and activities packed into a short hike. Fun and beautiful.

Definitely almost 10 miles. I enjoyed the trail. However the rocks were very hard on the feet after a while and I have good hiking shoes Saw a nice view of the lake as well as many other interesting beauties of nature. Was definitely peaceful.

I love this hike! I go all the way around! You can hike the creek bed. Along the waterfall.
It is busy at times. But, overall it is a great place to hike.

I loved this trail! The trees, the hike, the lake. Very peaceful. My dog loved it as well.

Pretty overgrown in spots, but a very green, forest trail. Lots of loose rock underfoot when walking up and down the hill.

Beautiful scenery, good workout with some elevation changes. Very rocky, be sure to wear shoes with good tread, especially if it has recently rained. My favorite trail at Petit Jean so far. Went on a Friday afternoon in August (very humid, obviously, but not too crazy hot as it is very shaded), didn’t see any other people at all.

Beautiful trail!

Very fun and warm afternoon. The hike is mostly shaded with a very well maintained and well marked trail. The trail is moderate but may be hard for anyone with knee issues as a lot of the trail consists of rock making a staircase.
The trail starts at Mather Lodge, we parked in the parking lot, used the nice bathrooms in the lodge and then started the hike. We did take an offshoot trail marked bear caves which extended the hike a bit. It took us one hour to get to the falls and back. There are nice rocks by the falls to have a picnic or rest for awhile.
We didn’t see any snakes but when we got back to the trailhead a woman spotted a snake and screamed, we were happy to be done with the trail at that point.

Great little hike. The beginning was a little boring but the falls were a spectacle to see. Also the cave was a little creepy as it was getting dark later in the evening.

Round trip: 3miles
Elevation gain: 846ft
Time: 1hr 5min

Soo...we attempted this trail last weekend. Got about a mile in and saw the biggest rattlesnake I have ever seen. It was on a narrow curve in the trail. It was unhappy and it had no intention of sharing the road with us. Unfortunately we decided it was safer to turn around. Hopefully we can attempt it again someday. But Rattlesnake food is not something I want to be. I suggest keeping a watchful eye on this one for now!

been here once, talk about beautiful!

Love Richland creek, falling water and all the other falls along this beautiful creek

By far my favorite state park and mountain. This is a beautiful hike with amazing views and plenty of wildlife to see. I suggest taking plenty of water and protein snacks if you plan to complete the entire 18 miles. Some may find areas a bit strenuous but over all a easy day long hike. Enjoy

Great trail but a little overgrown.

The views were simply amazing. Waterfalls, caves, wildlife ❤️

Great trail. If you have bad knees I would be cautious most of this train is lost on large steps and large lost rock!

Pay attention to your map! A TON of people we talked to along the way told us we were at the top when we were only halfway up. There are roads at both trailheads, if you don't see a parking lot and a road you are NOT done.

Very cool trail. As first time park goers we couldn't find the waterfalls, so definitely have a good map!

I drove down from Memphis in hopes of getting close to the waterfall. I was led to a trail start that overlooked a valley where I could only hear the waterfall, but there was no visible way down to get close to the fall. I heard what sounded like people below who were possibly hiking to the fall, but no one seemed to know how to get to where they were. I was quite disappointed. I saved up and planned for this trip and saw nothing related to a waterfall.

YES!!! This hike is a must!!! We did this hike with our 4 sons ages 6-11. They did fine. Pack water and good hiking shoes. Check out the pictures! I would suggest stopping at the cemetery on you drive in. The Whitaker’s are buried there. Kinda cool. They lived in he 1830’s.

We went mid-May and it was perfect! Beautiful trail and great for the entire family. The water was a bit cold to swim in, but that didn’t defer the kids!!

This trail is amazing, and I can’t believe that we haven’t been here before! It has history, varied terrain, a beautiful creek all along it, rock formations, a fantastic waterfall; we LOVED IT. Definitely will be back!

Very easy hike and lots of cool things to see, you have to go into the cave at the very end!

The trail was really challenging for us as we are beginners but was worth it.

My 11yr old son and I did this hike on a Monday evening. There were only a couple of other people on the trail so not bad. We did not have cell service in this area. The natural bridges were really cool. The big one (the one you walk over at the beginning) is pretty amazing underneath. I rated this trail 3 stars because it did seem to be more overgrown on parts of the trail and I did feel like there could be better trail markings. We actually missed the trail just beyond one of the smaller natural bridges and took off on what looked like a trail (and obviously other people had thought the same) before it came to a pretty overgrown dead end. We retraced our steps and realized we had completely missed the actual trail which seemed pretty obvious when we got there because it had steps. The couple behind us had missed it too. Besides that little misstep, it was a nice short hike and took maybe 35-45 minutes total.

We LOVED this trail! My 11yr old son and I did this hike on a Monday and it wasn't crowded at all. This trail has so much to explore along the way. The natural bridge, large rock shelter, waterfall (just a trickle currently), and the cave were all fun. I had read reviews previously so we came prepared to explore the cave with headlamps and flashlights. Explored far enough back that we were very cramped and then squeezed into a little tunnel where we could stand up that led back out. There was also a very large "room" just to the left when you enter the cave. As others mentioned, the rocks around and in the cave are slick so be cautious. Overall, a very cool trail and one that I would love to do again if I'm back in the area. I think we spent about an hour and a half doing the whole trail.

I did this hike with my 11yr old son and we really enjoyed it. The trail is nice and shaded for the most part. The highlight is obviously the waterfall and even though it wasn't gushing, it was still beautiful. We spent some time just enjoying that area and taking pics before returning. Be prepared to scramble over some large rocks if you want to get closer to the waterfall. The return is steep at the end as you travel up several switch backs to get back to the lodge where the trail begins. It was steep but not that bad for us. I think we stopped maybe once for a drink of water. I could see it being more troublesome for people with knee or other joint issues. The hike took us a total of 1.5 hours including time hanging out at the waterfall. Great hike and I would love to return sometime after some rain.

This was a neat, easy trail with cool features to explore. Will come back in the fall or spring when the creek is flowing, but it was fun even in the dry summer.
