Trial was great, not a single biker and only saw 3 people and a dog. Little wet as it warmed up during the day but great hike. No spikes needed.
Trail is mostly dry until about 4 miles in (just before the intersection with Brookside McCurdy). At that point, there are still a couple feet of snow with frozen postholes for a path until the pass. No need for snowshoes (although snow was mostly frozen for me); traction was very helpful.
Uphill and then more Uphill.
Nice well maintained trail. We hit snow at about 1/2 mile in. snow was about 2 feet deep on the trail and we post holed fora couple of miles before turning back. Snowshoes would be need to go further. Looking forward to going when the snow melts.
Wow what an awesome trail. I got there apparently early (about 9am) on a Sat., there was only 1 car when I arrived and they were way ahead of me. There was a good amount of snow up high, they ladies ahead of me broke trail and then when I passed them I broke trail for another mile or 2 to the summit. Really not bad after breaking above tree line, but deep up till then. I postholed up to my knees and I’m about 6’4.
Completed last weekend. 2 of us wore spikes the whole way, one did not at all. Trail for the most part easy to find and traveled. We had to break trail for approximately 2 miles. Snow was as much as 4 inches in some spots however did not warrant snowshoes.
Gorgeous views, but this is more of a fishing access trail than a hiking trail. The first two miles are cake, then the trail is snow covering loose gravel on the side of a steep hill that leads right into the river. Probably much easier to do in summer but a bit sketchy right now. Also where you see people’s recordings ending recently is where the trail becomes too difficult to continue.
Started at 8am today. -2F degrees! Used spikes the whole way, they were super helpful the first 10 miles then so/so the last 3 but still worth bringing on this segment (at this time of year). I did this with a 30lb pack and it took just over 5 hours. Elevation is not too bad either. Lots of animal tracks in the snow today. This is a mostly wooded area, a few nice views but overall just a nice walk. Probably beautiful in the summer... lots of great spots to lay a blanket and have a picnic lunch. Overall a fun walk. Nothing spectacular, but we’re trying to get all the segments done... so 3 down! Enjoy!
Spikes were helpful for parts of the trail. The trail was hard to follow at times, but it's helpful to know to follow the river but take the high route. Around mile 3 there's a notch that you have to climb up and through that was a little sketchy, maybe class 3. I'm not sure if there is a way around it.
Boy, that was tough. It was to get a warm up in the beginning of the trail, but once you pass 8500', the climb is steady and gets intense in some parts. Once you get around 11,000' near the junction of Brookside McCurdy, the snow pack changes and gets a little thicker. I didn't use any traction, but right after I left the junction, I put on gaiters. Summit scramble is not too terrible, I got lucky because someone had just summited an hour before I got there, and I could see his path. Some postholing, but not terrible. Super windy at summit, I would recommend bringing up a wind shell. I think there was a storm blowing in right as I summited, so maybe it's not as windy there all the time. And I used poles up and down. The down was nice and was way faster because I could skate down the trail is the snow was there. Started getting icy on the descent around 10,000', but not slippy ice. Entire trail is packed snow and fluff, gets softer at the trail junction.
Trail was hard to find at times. Lots of loose gravel.
Great scenery and trail was in fine condition though a bit hard to follow at times.
This segment is largely dense forest with limited veiws. The area around Little Scraggy Peak was my favorite. Snow kept the traffic down.
Great overlooking the river and all the fly fishing
Hiked this trail 2 weeks ago. Beautiful views of the river and damn. The section in the middle is technical with loose rocks, narrow ridge walks, and difficult trail to follow.
Good trail with changing views for being inside a canyon. You have to use your hands in some spots, the elevation gain isn’t hard but the technical parts can be a little tricky. Snow on the ground still for about half the trail. Beautiful view of the lake.
This second half was a meandering walk in the woods. Very easy and pleasant.
Great hike that is mostly free of a loose rock. Once you break tree line the views and landscape change dramatically and make it completely worth it!! It’s a grueling hike. Pretty much straight up one way and straight down the other though the incline isn’t bad.
beautiful area! the first 3 miles were great then the trail got sketchy. no snow. lots of people fishing hardly any hikers
Trail was hard to follow but easier to follow on the way down! Definitely some difficult terrain with the grade % and loose gravel/sand
