Parking is the only bummer.

Straight up. Do it slowly and make sure you have sturdy shoes as rocks and stones quite sharp

Did this hike in March of 2018. Came from the south road to the trailhead. I would recommend 4X4. The view from the top is very cool with all the quartz around you. I will be doing this hike again in the spring.

Great hike if you want to beat the crowd at Squaw Peak summit trail.

This is a great training hike!

No parking on the east side.

This trail had a lot of variance - desert, open vistas, creek crossing, and woodland. Because of that it's one of my fav's. It's special to walk along that creek - just lovely.

Our group from Gold Canyon AZ chose to hike the loop counter clockwise (about 3 miles), and then climb to Piestewa Peaks via the summit trail last so we could take a long lunch break before heading back to the parking area.

The only drawback to the peaks of North Mountain Park are the towers and clusters of communication apparatus. Lots and lots of people on these trails.

Perfect to skip leg day

I like this moderate trail, it's a loop and it takes me about two hours to complete it. sometimes it can be little crowded tho, specially on Sundays.

Steep, rocky, and narrow in parts. Definitely a difficult trail but doable. the views from the top are worth it. Go early to beat the crowds - a highly trafficked trail.

Great vistas, moderate elevation changes, and mule deer on named trail and a mountain lion in parking lot at library.

Very nice hike with great views in my opinion. The jagged rocky terrain make for a challenging hike. I would say it is similar to Piestewa. There were swarms of flying bugs near the top area with the flag so we weren't able to see the flag much. Very disappointing.

Was a little skeptical at first because of the footing, but you get used to it. Great workout and view of the city is nice also

It was tough at the beginning but doing it in the morning made it easier. Saw multiple deer groups and other wildlife!! A hike worth your $7 and more. It was summer so we started at 5:00am, I would say start at 4:30!

This hike is beautiful, definitely the most gorgeous trail I’ve been on in the Valley thus far. It has a variety of terrains you traverse; from switchbacks to a little bit of scrambling, and multiple miles of walking too. There is something for a variety of hiking experiences.

UPDATE: You can’t start at 4:30am due to the gate being closed — 5am is the earliest start time.

Rocky desert trail gives you good exercise

Good hike a little hot, get out early and get er done!!! I think it would be great to trail run this trail.

Its unique in such a beautfiul way. Kind of confusing in the beginning. Took a leff when i got to the area with bathrooms. Went and took the tortuga route But it was a while before I saw the Tortuga trail sign. Take it early, it gets very hot.

beautiful hike, great for families. Bring water!!

Excellent

Very pretty hike, but should be rated hard. About half of it is steep switchbacks.

This is the perfect early morning trail for my dog and me. Pretty busy on the weekends though. It’s not difficult, but you definitely feel like you get a good workout in if you keep a good pace.

This is a hard and challenging hike. I would not call it as difficult as Flat Iron.

The drive in to the turn off: There seems to be a lot of discussion. I have a Dodge Journey. Goes great with the dad bod and hiking sneakers. Coming in from the south way the roads were easy until I turned and headed north along the power lines. You I just had to slow down. I had clearance for the sand birm in the middle of the road. Really no problem. Go slow and take your time.

As for the way out. way more sand, much tighter and the wash outs were bad. There were a few times I followed the new tire tracks off the main road to get around the road. From the time you turn off the trail access road to the blacktop the "road" is a mess. Big broken wash outs. Lots of moderate to heavy sand, plants encroaching into the roadway. This is not a path for a "car". If it's about the same distance go the south route.

As for the hike I clocked it at 6.4 miles. the trail is lightly traveled for sure. It's all up hill to the point that when the path leveled off for a few feet, I walked slower. Really, it felt so good.

The upper third is a lot of rocks and broken trail however there are plenty of markers to show the path. There was a beat up American flag at the top. the western valley was an exquisite view. Make no mistake the down hill is tough too due to your up hill grind.

Not going again for sometime due to heat and distance to get there. But this is a hike if you're looking for something totally different and challenging

Love this trail for it's diversity. Beware during the spring and summer, there is a significant increase in rattlesnake traffic. The switch backs in the wilderness part of the trail will provide a hiker with the most solitude. I'm usually the only person on this part of the trail. if you are lucky, you might she see a deer, fox, havelina...There is only a water source at the trailhead. .hike will take you through the typical desert landscape, boulders, a 8' wall to scale, dry dam, sandy river bed, wilderness switch backs, great view of the city in the distance. ..I enjoy this trail early in the morning, around 5:30 am or 6am to avoid the heat and any possible traffic from other hikers...
