Stunning views, will def do it again. Wanted to see the wild pack of horses, no luck. Since this trail borders the lake, I'm sure it'll be less than serene on weekends, jet-skis, etc. When I went it was quiet, began around 7am on a Weds. Parking is $8, can get at a Circle k or QT on the way.

If curious about the name, https://www.google.com/search?q=Dr.+W.W.+Jones&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-1

Interesting quote, from AZ Republic.... "Question: Who was Butcher Jones, and why is a trail named after him near Saguaro Lake?

Answer: The Arizona Republic's Scott Craven did some research, and here's what he found:

"Butcher Jones most likely is Dr. W.W. Jones, according to state historian Marshall Trimble. An online search showed Jones to be more than a medical professional. In the mid-19th century, he also owned mines in Arizona as well as a freighting business. He lived in Yuma, Prescott, Wickenburg, Phoenix and Tempe, and later in life became a rancher. He apparently was fairly influential in his day, and he was friends with Jacob Waltz of Lost Dutchman Mine fame. There also was a mention that Dr. Jones performed surgeries on his dining room table, which may have led to his nickname of Butcher (a Parks Department employee said of Butcher Jones – 'I am pretty sure he was a doctor, but apparently not a very good one.')."

I would rate this hike as easy. Went around noon, at that time of day there is almost no shade the entire trail. So I definitely recommend lots of water. The hike up is a very slow incline. You won’t miss the petroglyphs, they definitely are worth the hike. I’d say the hike down is more beautiful, as you can see the valley. Rocky trail.

Sunrise is a great hike with light traffic. I access it using the Ringtail Trail that is further East of Lost Dog Wash Trail. The downside to this trail is that it’s really rocky which can be difficult to navigate for those not used to the desert terrain. Otherwise a great view at the top and have always met great fellow hikers on this trail. Definitely worth hiking, running and some even bike it, but it gets pretty tough the closer you get to the top.

Beautiful hike! Went nice and early to see the sunrise. Had the mountain ourselves!

Great trail...not marked well in the very beginning, but after the first 1/3 mile or so, it’s a clear trail. We saw THREE separate rattlesnakes on the trail on our hike, so be careful. Also saw a large tortoise and horny toad. No shade on trail. Beautiful view at the top. Definitely do this in the early morning to beat the heat. A few steep rocks to climb, but not too difficult. Completed this with a group of about 25, including teens and adults.

Challenging enough for a good workout this morning, but I’d still consider this a moderate hike. The scenery and views were great. I’d agree with those that said it was closer to 4.6 miles (which took us a little over two hours). I’d suggest plenty of water, wearing a hat, and going in the morning or in the early evening. The sun was no joke (although the breeze was nice and kept things okay until the last 15 min of our hike). The lot was full when we got there and the overflow lot’s gate was broken. We illegally parked in a neighborhood and felt guilty, but weren’t sure what to do. Oh, I’d also suggest having good walking shoes, or even trail shoes as it is a little precarious at points. Last 1/4 mile to the peak is the most challenging and not for those without sure footing. Worth it though, would recommend.

LOVED this hike! Arrived around 6:30am on a Saturday and it was pretty empty, although when we were heading back around 8 both the trail and the lake were starting to fill up. Seriously beautiful views of the lake and surrounding mountains the whole way, with some outlets to walk down to the water. There was a rattlesnake and a family of javelinas when we were there, so keep an eye out for wildlife and stay aware. Heads up (and my reason for 4 stars)- the lake is popular for boating and jetskis. If you're looking for a relaxing, quiet hike either go really early or pick another trail.

Me and 2 friends hiked this route on an overcast day a morning after a monsoon hit. Weather was perfect going in. Got hot as the sun came out on our hike back. Wouldn't recommend doing this hike in the middle of the day due to no shade along the trail. I gave it 4 stars because it was a beautiful hike for seeing desert after rain and for the beautiful views.

The waterfall at the end was a drip coming down. Disappointed it wasn't flowing.

I am out of shape and I considered the beginning of this hike easy, then it does become moderate the closer you get to the waterfall (or lack thereof).

Nice trail, Wild horses, lake views, easy access to the water. Very nice, will definitely do again!

It’s a nice trail with a little elevation change but definitely for hiking than going fishing. There is some good shoreline at the beginning of the trail but then it is up over and around before you back to where you can access the shore again. That’s ok! Have you mind set for hiking vs good fishing. Much better to be on the water. Kayaking or on a boat

AWESOME HIKE! Definitely an appropriate moderate rating. I went on 8/25 hoping to see the waterfalls in action since monsoon season has been pretty wet this year, but there were only pools of water, which were still lovely to see and had hundreds of butterflies and dragonflies all around. Take some time to read about the petroglyphs so you can truly appreciate how remarkable they are. There is virtually no reprieve from the sun on the entire trail, so by all means, bring plenty of water and take periodic rest stops to cool down. To date this has to be one of the best hikes I have gone on. You'll be glad this is an in and back out trail because the view is so gorgeous going both ways! I spent about 3 hours, drank through 3 liters of water, took a couple hundred photos, and will likely come back in cooler weather!

Beautiful hike that I do often. Not difficult though footing in places can be tricky . Gorgeous views of the water most of the way. Trash is becoming a problem so please please pick up after yourself!

Beautiful trail. We were able to see a ton of wildlife from lizards, to chipmunk, and even a coral snake. Didn't see any of the wild horses, but the trail runs right next to Saguaro Lake and provides you with some amazing views. Not too difficult of a trail, but always pay attention where you are stepping.

This would be a 5 star trail if there was some trail maintenance done, especially in the first mile or so. There is a ton of trash all over, there are parts that are very overgrown, and areas not well marked. Needs a little TLC.

Great moderate trail to a beautiful view.

I wanted so much to love this trail. It has water, great birds, horses, cool plants, and is pretty unique among places I've been in Arizona.

There was trash everywhere. I just wanted one spot on the hike where my partner and I could sit for 15 minutes overlooking the water without an empty beer can within 20 feet. Couldn't find one.

If Arizona cleans this area up, it becomes an easy 5 stars.

Nice moderate uphill hike, quite craggy. The final ¼ mile up to the peak is just as the signs indicate, narrow and steep, but not overly so. I'm a flip flop hiker and had no issues ascending or descending. Great shade spot on the peak for a quick break if extending this trail to Lost Dog Wash (nice easygoing extension). Also, keep an eye out for the larger lizards just a little before the first landing. Overall a nice hike.

When the desert is green, this is the most beautiful trail. Easy to moderate hike, great views everywhere you look, on every section of the trail. I’ve only seen the waterfall once, in the spring. Usually it’s dry. This is one of my favorites in the Supes.

There are nice views along the trail and at the end, where you'll find the petroglyphs. The petroglyphs aren't subtle, either, so you'll have no problem finding them. :)
I wouldn't recommend hiking this trail if you don't have proper hiking or trail shoes. You do need the grip here and there.
There is a nice sized parking lot, too, so unless you're hiking this in peak season on a weekend, you'll find a spot.
If you go during monsoon season, be mindful of a flash flood risk. At the end, where you'll find the petroglyphs are pools and a waterfall. Don't get caught in there if it's raining. The rocks would be too slippery to confidently be safe.

It is actually beautiful. I went this am, late start. Turned around after a bit. On trail 45 min. Came back to my car & rear window smashed. Items stolen from car. Police said several cars were hit. At sunrise & another trailhead.

Really too bad

Beautiful canyon on the way in and really nice views from the top. I saw 5 other hikers on my hike that started at 5 PM on Friday afternoon. 75% of the way was shaded and a nice breeze was blowing which brought the temp down 10 degrees or so from 108 when I started out. The 1000' foot climb up is a lot easier than comparable hikes around the valley.

Great hike through the desert. Relatively close to the East valley. Well maintained and we'll traveled. Great views at the top.

We went early morning in July, I mean 6 a.m.. the beginning of the tail is in direct sun light. once you get to larger rocks, it's more shaded as the sun hasn't come over the ridge yet. BEAUTIFUL. lovely views. we only went half way (per the trail on the map here)

Nice trail, some rocky parts. Beautiful views.

A wonderful, moderately difficult, non-technical hike so close to Scottsdale! We started at 5am and caught the sunrise on our way up - the views from the top are incredible. Highly recommended.

Great family hike. Interesting petroglyphs.

Did this hike with my son who isn't as enthusiastic about hiking in 110 heat as I am. We chose this hike for the moderate elevation gain and distance. The views are ok and the trail is well marked. The highlight are the hieroglyphics at the end. As many of the other reviewers have said, the bees in the pool below make hanging out by the hieroglyphs problematic.

Love this trail and it''s not as traffic as other trails I go to.

Like this Trail, best to get an early start this time of year. A lot of the Trail is vertical inclines. Good workout!

A moderately tough climb due to Elevation, loose rocks and gravel. Well worth the effort as you reach the summit the views are fantastic.
