Beautiful trail even in winter

We did the Buckeye Mountain/Caney Creek Trail Loop on 12/01-12/02. This review is just for the Buckeye portion. If you are starting from Buckeye trailhead, make sure that you have plenty of water from the start. If you are starting around Katy Falls, make sure you top off before you head up. The trail runs along a mountain ridge and there are no places to stop for water once on the trail.

Started at the Caney Creek trailhead and made the 1.1 mile hike up the road to the Buckeye Mountain trailhead. This hike up the road is by far the worst part of the hike, as it is just a constant gradual ascent for the whole mile. The trail itself is not very difficult. It's a pretty quick hike up to the ridge. Then a several small ascents and descents as you go along the mountain ridges. Lots of great spots for photos. There was one spot on the ridge where we almost lost the trail, but I think this was mostly due to a lot of fallen leaves. Other than that, it was easy to keep up with.

On the descent toward Katy Falls, there were a few spots where some large fallen trees blocked the trail, and we had to get a little creative to get around them. Outside of this, the trail was easy to follow and hike down.

Katy Falls area is a nice spot to stop to rest before completing the remainder of the loop, or finding a spot to camp.

I enjoyed this trail despite some challenges. I did it in July 2017 and a freak storm came in from nowhere and kept us wet virtually the entire trail. The trail makes you give up a lot of elevation, so it can be a good workout. It is tough to stay on the trail in parts of it due to lack of traffic and not many blazes. If you want to challenge your endurance a lot and your navigation a little I highly recommend this trail. I completed it in one long day and I’m an old fat guy so just about anyone can do this one if your motivated. There is a neat shelter near the intersection with the Ouachita Trail. I think the HARD rating that this trail is probably appropriate. If you run marathons or have thru hiked the AT six times I know it was easy for you, no need to boast.

Worth all the traffic!

Everything I could ask for in a mountain ridge hike!

Every trail here is amazing... beautiful place.

GREAT TRAIL!

Nice scenery and great view at the end! Would be an awesome trail if it had some blazes. It’s really hard to follow in spots.

Great trail!

This trail (lightly traveled) is connected to the Cedar Falls Trail (which is heavily traveled during peak times) so it is a nice break from other people and much quieter. The creek is a nice view too.

Gorgeous hike. Great view of the waterfalls.

Lots of cool sites along this trail. Grotto is a must, really nice area.

Fun hike, can get behind the waterfall if careful

Really nice trail. The half mile round trip spur to the grotto is worth it. Signage is good enough to follow. Lots to look at on the trail, although the rocks can be a little treacherous when they get wet. Probably great colors in fall. Parking is limited, but wasn't an issue on a Saturday morning in December.

Great trail, the stones were like a maze in and out here and there. It was fun.

You can drive up red bluff road and go park right above the cave if you aren’t up to hiking all the way around. You will be about 10 minutes from the cave. It is a beautiful sight to see and walk around

Took the .5 mile trail from Mathers Lodge to Bear Cave Trail. Easy to navigate. Interesting rock formations
that you can scurry up on if your relatively nimble. Good easy trail for kids and adults alike.

As other reviews have mentioned, the first couple of miles up the mountain are fairly challenging. this trail is also not well marked but it visible throughout if you pay attention. for most of the way up the mountain there was fairly good cellphone reception. the views were absolutely amazing! we missed the water falls as the trail turns back to the caney trail east. we started this trail around noon and got to the junction of caney trail around 3. the hike back is easy, but it is longer than expected and crosses the creek several times. the caney creek trailhead is also not well marked, it's a blank board. Overall this trail is demanding at 11 miles and took about 6 hours to complete. It definitely is worth the views and terrains.

Absolutely gorgeous! The fall leaves just added to the beauty, but also made the trail a little slick! Fun adventure during training.

We did this hike in the August heat. It was crowded, but still a great hike! The waterfall was well worth it!

Loved it.

Hiked this today with my wife and our 5-year-old granddaughter. Pretty tough 5 mile hike (4.5 if you don't take the Grotto spur, but you gotta take that spur!) for a little one. She was fine the first half, but then got pretty cranky. I ended up carrying her about a mile and that made it far more difficult for me. We took lunch and found a nice spot to eat just off the trail. Saw several such places. No really steep climbs, just a lot of up and down over not-so-easy footing. Still really enjoyable. The natural bridge was beautiful, and the waterfall at the Grotto was too. We'll definitely be back.

Crowded but still very pleasant short hike.

All I have to say is breathtaking views!!

Great intermediate trail

We hiked this with our dog and enjoyed the diverse landscapes, views, and creek crossings. We hiked the Cedar Creek Trail afterwards and I would highly recommend that shorter (slightly more rigorous) trail for more water crossings and views. Also, don’t miss the scenic overlook towards the entrance of Petit Jean State Park (Stouts Point)

This trail has several things to see. There is the natural land bridge, the grotto, and some turtle formed rocks. All in all, this trail should be on everyone's bucket list.

We did this trail during the fall and it was great. There are a lot of cool trails and views to see in Petit Jean State Park and this goes by many of them. I definitely wouldn't consider this trail hard, there were only a couple small sections that were difficult.
