Beautiful trail with great views! The trail was well marked, we followed the map in the post and had no problems using the trail markers. There is some wildlife on the trail, we saw a coyote. Enjoy!

My friend and I did this hike last month with weighted vests.
It was very mild, although my big o' hiking boots were probably too heavy for walking in sand.
We started while it was still pitch black and didn't see anyone until a mile or 2 headed back.
There is an insane amount of elk and some foxes and deer.
The flowers were beautiful. We even got some light rain, so it was wonderful!

Do this hike now, while the wildflowers are in bloom!

If you go on a weekend, start early to avoid crowds. We left at 9AM and enjoyed walking through the fog as it burned off. Passed only a few people on the way in. The last quarter of the hike (around 11:30), the trail had become unpleasantly crowded.

We are fit backpackers and finished the trail in 3 hours and 10 minutes.

Amazing hike! A family favorite.

The scenery is amazing and the miles are long - start early and bring sunscreen!

Like others have mentioned, this trail is definitely more moderate than easy but it's such a beautiful hike. You can take your time and really soak the redwoods in while you catch your breath ;)

amazing hike, start early to avoid the crowds

Really nice trail. Parking is easy and you may even run into a cow or two on the trail :) Very easy hike.

Good solid hike, made it all the way to the point! Definitely with the hike, a bit windy and definitely no cover from the sun... at the end there is a bit of sand to trudge through so be ready for that... not too busy went on a weekday, will definitely do it again

Really nice hike, lots of steep uphills with rewarding end at the lake- went on a Saturday in February and there was no one else at the lake when we got there. We did somehow take a wrong turn on the way back and ended up walking back to the trailhead via the road, so take care with directions.

Great trail, took a picture of the map located at the trailhead, well marked easy to follow directions, shaded with big trees for majority of the hike. Muddy today but no big deal, still enjoyed this quiet hike.

Fun trail. The stairs were fine (novice-moderate hiker, here). Great views of the Bay.

Beautiful hike, great views when you get to the top - it was a clear day and we could see the Bay, bridges and city. We also saw turkey vultures, red kites, woodpeckers, and even a couple of newts in addition to the fluffy cows! A great hike, especially for spring or fall when it's not too hot.

I I idiot I in it in I I it I it ok to oiopopllop

Was beautiful just the hardest hike I’ve ever been on yet worth it when you get to the top.

One of the funniest trails I have explored thus far. Plenty of Tule Elk as advertised and a plethora of wildlife to see!

McKennan Gulch Trail has been closed for several years and is now overgrown with poison oak and shoulder high growth. Hikers are frequently having to be rescued in this area.

Beautiful hike! It delivered the marvelous views as advertised.. On a clear blue day the colors were unbelievable and the rich variety of vegetation and wildlife were glorious. We saw elk, bobcat, jackrabbit, and lots of birds. Wild strawberries in bloom, California poppies, irises, and other wildflowers. The trail was pretty packed- Presidents Day, and the wind was wicked strong and cold. Definitely needed a lot of layers. Really wished I had a hat or hood.

What an adventure! Don’t let the fire roads in the beginning fool you...this hike is legit. Did the loop clockwise, and after the first waterfall things start to get hairy. Trail got narrow, overgrown, steep and rocky. After loosing sight of the path I ended up accidentally off-roading a few times, but even the proper trail required all fours occasionally for sections that were more climbing than hiking. All in all, a fantastic workout and a fun adventure...as long as you’ve got long pants and sleeves, time to spare and AllTrails Pro in case you get lost when you’re offline like me - I’d still be wandering in the woods without my downloaded map!

Not dog friendly. Drove out here to find a sign that says no dogs. Super disappointed as it looked really nice.

Great trail for on-leash dog hiking! We walked out 5 miles and back 5 miles from the north end. It was open and exposed the whole time (no walking in forested areas—that’s farther south) with a wide trail and beautiful views of the hills and the nearby bay. There is a point 1.2 miles from the trailhead where it’s unclear whether you should go through a gate and continue left or walk left on the current side of the fence — go through the gate!! The misleading path is a cattle path. Speaking of which — the cows can be extremely *friendly*, thinking you are bringing them food. If you have dogs (especially heelers) make sure you’re following the leash rule for their safety. It can be INCREDIBLY windy, so make sure you dress accordingly. I plan on going back and trying an out-and-back from the southern end.

Awesome trail and views. Dog friendly off the leash. We did the 4miles one and was espectacular!

There were many elk along the the trial. Amazing coastal views

Excellent trail. Easy parking and safe feeling. Was hoping for a view to the south to see SF on summit, but mostly valley views, arguably more pretty anyways. Shady, so really good for warm days, but can be really cold feeling on colder days (62 today but felt way cooler in woods), so wear many layers if it’s below 65.

Moderate rating is accurate - steepish sections but trails are very easy to follow and well maintained. Did it in about two hours. Lots of horse manure when we went, easy for humans to dodge, no big deal, but may become frustrating if you are navigating your four legged friends who always wanna sniff around it the whole way.

Like all hiking treks, check for ticks at the end. Noticed one heading for open skin after I got into my vehicle, caught him though, no sucking on me sucker!

I would say this trail is about 50/50 in the shade and sun which is nice during cooler days, but would be a bit uncomfortable in the summer. The views however are amazing. At about 2.5 mile, you start to see really incredible views of the vineyards and grasslands with the best view at the end of the trail. The trail is rocky for most parts and there's a steady incline the entire way. I would rate it about easy-moderate. Easy if you regularly hike, but a little of a challenge if you're just getting into hiking. The trail also has 1 mile markers along the way which is helpful to know how far you've gone.
