Hiking

Amazing trek, the trek was more amazing that the final destination! Altitude can be hard so few days before in Cusco best. Chewing Coca leaves > altitude pills (personally). Loved the weather variation, the views are what life is all about, the lamas are cute .

HikingGreat!

Difficult but amazing hike. Prepare for the elevation (take medicine, stay in Cusco beforehand at least a few days, etc). Use hiking poles. Practice hiking with a backpack on. My shoulders hurt really bad by the second last day. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience and I highly recommend it.

not super steep, but still fairly difficult due to the high altitude. make sure you’re adequately acclimated!!! the latter parts are significantly colder than the beginning so bring lots of layers

Great!

By the time we got here we had been in Peru 9 days, post Inca Trail. The altitude was not an issue. Started the trail early so the sun rose over the mountain we were climbing - somewhat blinding. Got camera shots on way back down. At ~16,500 ft view was fantastic, and yes the brochures have doctored the colors. But, just fantastic. Due to a leg injury I stay at the ridge, my travel partner went into the red valley. Worth the work to get there.

HikingGreat!

I did it as part of my bucket list in 2019 when I was 64. Had planned for the physical but was taken back by the mental strain; figuring out where and how to step; especially on the second day. Great experience, fantastic views. Worth the pain!

Went here Jan 2020 - MUST SEE. So breath taking in person, bring extra layers just in case it's cold (it lightly snowed while I was there) and make sure to have gotten used to the elevation for a day or two prior to going!

HikingMuddy

Hardest hike I’ve ever done in my life. It started to snow and hailed at the summit but it was spring. Because of this, we sadly could barely view the mountains colors. The altitude was definitely hard if you are not used to it and was very muddy since it had rained the day before. Overall not my favorite experience of Cusco but probably better for someone more experienced.

Backpacking

Absolutely stunning. Did the trek with my brother last year and we walked from Tinki so the whole thing took us about five days. Overall it was difficult but very rewarding. We encountered few people, but were attacked by dogs twice during the trip. Luckily I’d read about the dogs being aggressive, and we were able to ward them off with our trekking poles when they leaped at us, but it was still an alarming experience. Both times we were on the trail but they were probably just being territorial of the nearby alpaca herds. The trail itself is pretty easy to follow but there are a couple of spots where it vanishes for a short while. The good news is there is an almost constant source of water nearby, so we never had to carry much with us at one time which definitely helped ease some of the weight on our packs. We did the trek in the beginning of July and the weather was great! It didn’t rain at all and only snowed once when we were headed down from the highest peak on the circuit. I highly recommend this trek to anyone looking for a little adventure among a beautiful and varied landscape.

HikingGreat!

I did this in 2014. One of the greatest experiences you will ever have. I’d suggest a few months of training/walking beforehand to make the trek a lot more enjoyable, especially Day 2. Hiking poles are good for the downhills as are a good pair of shoes with grip! A great reward at the end being the sun gate and then Machu Picchu!

HikingGreat!

This was a difficult hike but the best experience I ever had. Amazing views everywhere, remember to stop and look up and around your surroundings. A lot of stairs so beware, going uphill was more difficult for me but I took my time, downhill was much easier. Thankful I had trail runners, a lot lighter than hiking boots. I can’t wait to fo back to Peru to discover more what this beautiful country has to offer.

One of the most surreal hikes of my life. Those colours!! Mild incline the whole way, but what makes it hard is the altitude. Take your time. The reward is great! Also bring a windbreaker and maybe a toque. It’s pretty chilly and windy at the top!

Truly a life changing trek and my all time fave. Select a good outfitter/guide and do your research long before hand. Use trekking poles. Would not have made it otherwise. Make sure your prepared for the high altitude.

Rainbow Mountain - I did this hike 2 or 3 years ago and have a love/hate for it. It really was a GREAT hike, but DO NOT hike this without getting acclimated first if you're from sea level like myself!!

Day one was meh. Day two was brutal as you ascend to Dead Woman’s Pass. Day 3 and 4 are bad ass. Use trekking poles!

This 4 day hike was the most enlightening hike ever! The final day was so magical! Day 3 was 360 views of the mountains! Day 2 is the most for elevation gain! Having walking sticks really helped on day 3 with all the steps down!

I hiked this in March. Was a hard hike because of how high the altitude was . The majority of the hike wasn’t as steep until you get to the bottom of the summit and that’s where it becomes challenging. But worth it.

Awesome trail with amazing views. I was not in the best condition during this hike and managed to get to the top without paying the 60 soles for a horse ride. Although the elevation makes it difficult, you will be rewarded with beautiful views and a sense of accomplishment when you reach the top!

I did this trail a few years ago with a tour company called GAdventures in December. It was breathtaking. I never hiked prior to this trial and I did find it challenging due to the elevation however the views made it worth it.

Did this 2 years ago and it was simply breathtaking. I will be back for sure, the views and the people you meet are worth the trip. I struggled due to fear of highs but take it slow and you’ll be fine.

Such a cool experience. I did this a few years back with my husband & sons. I don't think you have to be incredibly physically fit to do this hike; pace is slow and mileage per day is low. Loved our guides and all the history lessons along the way. Highly recommend.

We hiked the Inca Trail towards the end of January, right before it closes for maintenance. Even with all of the rain, this is a very scenic trail with a lot of stops along the way. Definitely worth the reward at the end!

My friend and I did this 4 day hike as part of our 2 week adventure. We went with (Alpaca Expeditions) and it was our first time using porters and they made it very comfortable and amazing meals. This trip is rugged but the altitude makes it difficult if you’re not ready for it. The views, historical sites and many animals we experienced are difficult to put into words. Our last day we awoke at 2:45 AM to be first in line at the park gate which opens at 5:00. Then it’s a quick trek to the su gate to await the most amazing site of the trip. The early wake up and the ( Gringo Killer) steps you to the gate are well worth it. I could go on and on. Just go!
